Combining amateur and pro wrestling

Recommended Posts

Guest Risk

I had this crazy idea of mixing amateur and pro wrestling.  What I mean is having uncoreagraped wrestling matches in a pro wrestling ring with pro wrestling-esque rules, gimmicks, and real feuds.  You could make an entertaining SPORT promotion.

What does everyone think?  Anyone have any ideas to add to this idea?

If its going to be real (like shootfighting, UFC, etc.) it would be hard to have the storylines because you'll never know who would win. If it was possible somebody would be doing it.

Did UWFi use that concept in Japan, I believe it was a worked shoot promotion?

Storylines could work in an UFC or Pride wrestling promotion, such as having fighters of different styles trying to prove their style is the best fighting style in the world.  Have stables built around what gym/wrestling school they represent.

Brazil Juijitsu vs Japanese Shooters

Hammer House vs Lions Den

The WWF could start something like this maybe have Shamrock bring in some UFC fighter like Waterman, Kerr, Coleman, Frye.  Then have them feud against a team of NCAA champions Kurt Angle, Lesner, and others.

I thought about this many of times. it would possibly work but heat would develop between the grapplers. if they could be men about this all, than it would/could work and would be pretty entertaining if handled correctly.

At one time, wrestling was like this during the days of Ed "the Strangler" Lewis... the finishes were planned to a certain degree, but alot of the moves and holds were legit and very unchoreographed

Of course, I'm sure most of you knew that. just thought I would bring it up

I don't think it'd work - the wrestlers would be too tired and get injured too often to compete regularly. You'd need a really big roster.

The Observer ran a piece on two start ups that were like this a couple of months ago. IIRC one was very anti WWF and wanted to do a pure shoot/amateur fed and the other wanted more storyline based stuff with razzamatazz but still shoot/amateur fights.

Haven't heard anything since though.
