As for politicising President Reagan's legacy, showing respect for the dead, coming together in a time of grief, and all the rest of that nauseating touchy-feely garbage - please don't make me laugh.

 

I loved President Reagan, I respected and admired his leadership, wisdom, and courage. I'm saddened by our loss as a nation, and I'll attend President Reagan's funeral, and I'll pray for him then as I've prayed for him many times already. But the cold clear objective truth is this: his death, just as the election season has begun to swing into gear, is quite literally manna from heaven.

 

Politicise his death? Oh, you betcha. Guys, I'm sorry, but if I have my way we're going to make you swallow that flag-draped coffin sideways. Everything you've ever said to disparage this great man will be dug up, dusted off, painted in spiffy new colours and put on a goddamn pedestal under a really bright spotlight for all the world to see. And the state funeral ceremonies are going to make the Pope's anointment and enthroning look like amateur night at a small-town kindergarten in Wisconsin. I'm talking military honour guards in full dress uniform, the flag hanging from every conceivable surface, parades and horses and processions and motorcades and in-formation flyovers. I'm talking 21 gun salutes until you can barely hear marching band after marching band playing The Star Spangled Banner. I'm talking about the full awesome power and majesty of the American Presidency refocused like a laser into the most dazzling 24-hour media event of the year. For weeks.

 

Don't bother to pretend the Democrats would do anything differently. You wouldn't. And I promise you, we won't either.

 

And you know what? When the Gipper glances down from heaven, he'll give us a huge grin and a big thumbs-up.

Rant's wording isn't necessarily what I mean. For instance, I don't think everyone on the board is a bitch. People are people and they each have their faults but I'm not going to sling mud.

 

However, given the cultural language of today, the spirit of what I would have said was summed up in Rantie's harsher version. That everyone is acting like children over what an internet columnist has to say is honestly pretty funny.

 

Personally, I think what happened was deplorable.

 

But I'm not going to write a thesis on it, and I have little intention of giving that particular website any attention over it.

I do know that Scott Keith and one of the 411 Music Reviewers are Canadian though and have shat on Reagan's memory.

Eric S is from Chicago. He got fired from thesmarks after 9.11 when he said some disparaging things about Barbara Olsen.

Oh, on a side note, wtf is up with this whining I've been hearing from some groups about putting Ronnie's face on currency? Jesus, how petty...

I think it's mostly just because people don't want one of their favorites bumped off of currency in favor of someone else. Personally I think they should go with the $10 bill route since Hamilton isn't a president.

 

On a related note, someone today was actually suggesting that they rename the Pentagon after Reagan. Personally I think that's a bad idea, it's too well-known both in name and in appearance.

This sounds like another Reagan National Airport in the making. (For those not familiar, the Washington, DC airport is shortened to "National," not "Reagan," when referencing it.
