Holy shit.

Number six gets 14 million alone. Wow.

I remember the days where Identity and Phone Booth would hit number one in their first weekends with just 10 million.

wouldn't think so...I saw very little hype for it anyways.

I know it likely was a big budget though, so it likely won't make profit.

Is Garfield a Bomb or not? I mean 21 million is still 21 million but at 5th place though...

What comes out next week?

I haven't seen Chronicles of Riddick yet, but everyone I've talked to said they loved it. I'm probably going to see it sometime this week and I'll post my thoughts.

Nah, 21 million is still very strong. I doubt they expected much more considering Harry Potter was just a week old and they were opening against two films that had bigger hype behind them. Not to mention SHREK 2 still sitting on the board.

If it nose dives next weekend then yeah, then they will be disappointed. If it holds well, prepare for GARFIELD 2: ON THE PROWL or something.

The fact that RIDDICK pulled 24 million is a shock to me. The film looked like pure cheese, like a serious version of Flash Gordon.

I thought Kidman's name alone would be enough to put The Stepford Wives above Riddick.

Garfield just doesn't look good. I imagine that kids are the main audiance, but do they even know who Garfield is in 2004?

Ouch.

Riddick had a budget of $120 m, so just $20 isn't too good.

Well it's total gross vs. total budget that matters, not opening week.

Yeah, but it is going to be hardpressed to do that with a $20 million opening weekend. A film needs roughly double their production and advertising budget worldwide to turn a profit. Domestic box office generally makes up about 50% of that total so if it makes back its budget in the US, it is probably going to be a success. There are exceptions for certain films, like Troy which do much better overseas than in the US and those like Spider-Man which don't have a big following overseas and need to make the bulk of its money in the US. Riddick certainly appears to be in trouble, and it is looking more and more like Harry Potter is going to be the top grossing movie of the summer (it is close to Shrek in the US and more popular internationally).

You didn't see one?

Damn, I saw that stupid commercial about 40 times in two days. That commercial has been all over the place. I'm rather shocked.

Riddick doesn't have a chance of making the money back. Oh well, should have made a sequel to PITCH BLACK instead of whatever the hell they made.

Isn't riddick a sequel to pitch black?

They call it that but Pitch Black was an action/horror. Chronicles of Riddick is Vin Diesel finally proving to us all that he IS the next Stallone. Well, Stallone after the Rambo and good Rocky movies. Perhaps a dash of Frank mixed in for good measure.
