Guest Ripper Posted April 24, 2002 Report Posted April 24, 2002 Have you ever liked a song and then someone does a cover of it and it blows so bad that you almost don't like the song anymore. I loved the song "Freebird" and then I heard Phish do one of the worst renditions of this beautiful possible. I wanted to beat the living hell out of all of them for it. I mean they started making stupid noises and just yelling for a while it just truley pissed me off.
Guest DragonflyKid Posted April 24, 2002 Report Posted April 24, 2002 I don't know about a cover making a song go bad, but when a song appears on a commercial I start associating that song with that commercial and it goes bad that way. It's not the "selling out" part that bothers me, it just sort of taints the song with certain images that devalue the songs themselves.

I was always bothered that Michael Jackson licensed the rights to Revolution to NIke. Beattles just don't belong in commercials.

I noticed that brittney Spears was singing "I lOve Rock and Roll" in the commercials for her movie. While the song wasn't my favorite, it horrifies me now. Please Brittney, no more. Just let us look.

She covered "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," too. She seems to have a mandatory "one godawful Britney-ized version of a rock classic" per album deal. I guess she thinks it makes her look more mature, or that people will take her more seriously. I was just delighted that she left in the line about "girly action." Ahhh...
Guest The Man in Blak Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 I think Our Lady Peace's cover of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" may be one of the most blasphemous thing dedicated to any recording...with Godhead's butching of "Eleanor Rigby" only a couple of steps behind.
Guest Mark4steamboat Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Sheryl Crowe's version of "Sweet Child O'Mine" i cant hear the original anymore now. she ruined it. dumb bitch.
Guest The Man in Blak Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Oh, geezus - I totally forgot about "Sweet Child O'Mine." That's tied with Our Lady Peace - that's a heinous butchering of one of the only Guns 'N Roses songs that I like.
Guest razazteca Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Kid Rock doing Legs all of those RNB singers stealing rap beats.....Ashanti!!!!! the producers who slow down the rap songs calling it Skrewed remixes, Swisher House sucks.
Guest Kinetic Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 This just in: Papa Roach covers the Pixies' "Gouge Away" on their new album. I don't think anything can ruin one of my favorite Pixies songs, but that's pretty bad.
Guest redbaron51 Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 I actually heard in concert that I went too, Papa Roach butchered Run to the Hills. Boy was I pissed.
Guest hardyz1 Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Speaking of Papa Roach butchering songs, did anybody see the MTV Icon special for Aerosmith? Papa Roach did a horrible cover of Sweet Emotion.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Ashanti's bastardization of "One More Chance" and "Fuck You Tonight."
Guest razazteca Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 the whole Aerosmith Icon show was bad: Pink, Shakira, Papa Roach were all bad Wicked by Korn, is a bad rock cover of a rap song
Guest Choken One Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Staind(Whom I like) killed "Sober" from Tool.
Guest ant_7000 Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Dont knock Ashanti for the beats thats on Irv Gotti and his producers for stealing bad boy beats which bad boy stole from 70's acts lol
Guest evenflowDDT Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Britney's awful covers of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "I Love Rock and Roll" have already been mentioned, so I'm going to go with the "pop all star" versions of "What's Going On" and "Lady Marmalade". One can almost forgive the "What's Going On" because of its good intentions as a 9/11 tribute, but as one of those heartless unpatriotic souls who believes the 9/11 stuff was (and still is) just another commercial endeavor cashing in on a tragedy, I choose to remain unforgiven of that travesty to Marvin Gaye. I also hate when R&B and rap artists do reconstructed "duets" with dead rappers. 2Pac's mom (or whoever owns his estate) is notorious for taking any piece of unreleased crap in his vaults, remixing it and adding vocals from some other artist so it sounds awful, and putting it on the market, where it's of course snapped up by all the mainstream 2Pac fans
Guest hardyz1 Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 the whole Aerosmith Icon show was bad: Pink, Shakira, Papa Roach were all bad Agreed, except I thought that Train did a pretty good cover of "Dream On".
Guest razazteca Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Dont knock Ashanti for the beats thats on Irv Gotti and his producers for stealing bad boy beats which bad boy stole from 70's acts does it matter who stole it from who? I dislike Puffy and Ashanti producers for taking excisting songs and adding new lyrics to it then claim that it is the Hottest Jam of the week!! ???
Guest Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 One of the worst I can think of right now... Puffy ruining a pretty good Police song "I'll be watching you" just so he could give Biggie's bloated, dead corpse one final hand job.
Guest hobu0 Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Limp Bizkit-Faith Alien Ant Farm-Smooth Criminal getting famous off others work....blech
Guest swan Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Alien Ant Farm-Smooth Criminal I must admit I like that cover.
Guest saturnmark4life Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Fuck papa roach even touching the pixies stuff. Nothing can ruin gouge away for me cos I've seen Frank Black do a great live rendition twice, but i can't imagine how that would sound. I don't hate papa roach all that much, but NO. On the subject of Britney, an english band called sugercoma have done a metal cover of crazy that is the worst song ever released commercially in my eyes. Some woman singer (I'm sorry, but a definite no in any heavy metal band) who starts screaming like a man for the chorus. It. Is. Horrible.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Puffy ruining a pretty good Police song "I'll be watching you" just so he could give Biggie's bloated, dead corpse one final hand job. Sean Combs was giving himself a handjob. He likes doing that if you couldn't tell. That's like Suge Knight said, "he's all on the records. All in th videos singing and dancing." I get tired of that crap. He's yelling thorughout the damn song and featured prominently in the video, but he didn't have shit to do with the song and is just trying to take the spotlight away from his artists. Does he think anyone still wants to see his face anymore? Dont knock Ashanti for the beats thats on Irv Gotti and his producers for stealing bad boy beats which bad boy stole from 70's acts lol It was her voice I heard singing the song and made me yell out loud in frustation. I place the blame on all of them. I understand that she doesn't make the decisions and she is the recipeient of, not the generator of all of her hype, but she is squarely in the middle of the stench that swirls around her regardless of who has created it. I have to listen to the commerial on the radio talking about all of her smash hits, while only two of the osng sthey named had ever been played on the radio before and her album wasn't released yet. Something else that pissed me off about her was the comparisons to Aaliyah. I don't know a lot about Ashanti, but I'll be damned if someone says she is like Aaliyah because she has Irv Gotti produicing for her while Aaliyah had Timbaland producing for her. Anyone who thinks Irv Gotti has even a microsized portion of Timbalands talent is fucking crazy. does it matter who stole it from who? I dislike Puffy and Ashanti producers for taking excisting songs and adding new lyrics to it then claim that it is the Hottest Jam of the week!! I hate that shit too most of the time, but Biggie's lyrical ability allowed me to make an exception in most cases. It's kind of funny how many people steal Biggie's lyrics these days. If anyone says anything that rhymes on a song these days, chances are they stole a portion of it (if not all of it) from Biggie. When Nas made the comment towards JAy-Z, "How many of Biggie's rhymes are gonna come out your fat lips," I was cheering my ass off for him.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Rob Zombie pisses me off with all of his remixes of his classic White Zombie tunes. I might idolize Rob and all, aside from his lying to Sean and J about reforming White Zombie (what self-respecting hard rocker/metalhead wouldn't love to see White Zombie reform?), but his remixes suck the big one. Especially the Black Cat Crossing remix of "Never Gonna Stop." The song wasn't that good to begin with, but it was still good, because it was Zombie. But the remix? Makes me want to wish I never got Astro-Creep 2000 for my 11th birthday, which got me addicted to Zombie.
Guest Mark4steamboat Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 POD's cover of a Bob Marley song (cant remember which it was new years eve) and papa raoch doing "lithium" on mtv's new year's eve show 2 yrs ago. the whole idea behind covers basically suck. btw, monster magnet ruined Enter Sandman.

Guest Shaved Bear Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 limp bizkit did a 2:30 min cover of master of puppets not only do you take away hetfields voice, and the pace of the song, you generally piss on it, i wonder if this helped push wes out the door
Guest evenflowDDT Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Also, whenever there are "tribute" albums, most of the time the covers aren't necessarily totally horrid, but don't match up to the original and detract from them slightly. The semi-recent Doors tribute album Stoned Immaculate, is a perfect example of this.
Guest godthedog Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 the whole idea behind covers basically suck. i have to take issue with this. covers are a basic part of rock music, & they always have been. it's just that, like anything else, they can be done well or badly. to say the basic idea behind covers sucks is pretty contentious, because i think there are more than enough GREAT covers out there that justify their existence: 'all along the watchtower,' 'sweet jane,' 'she's a woman,' plenty of others.
