This PPV has an odd main event on it but the rest of the show is great.  Mike Awesome and Tanaka had a great little match after Taz was tossed.

I just bought the VHS version.  It is pretty good, if not disjointed.  Lynn/Storm have a great opener, and the world title match is good fun. But RVD/Mahoney is long and quite boring.  I also got Heatwave '98 and that one is much better in my opinion.  BTW, are there any extras on the dvd? Cuz at my local store, the box doesn't show any extras (which is why I bought the vhs versions, also cuz I don't have a dvd player yet).  was I wrong to buy the vhs now, instead of waiting till I can buy a dvd player?  I have extreme evolution and POD on vhs too, but hope to sell them to get the dvd versions when I can.  so whats the deal?

I found AR99 to be better than Heatwave 98.

Rvd vs. Ballz the first time I watched it wasnt that good, but the second time I actually liked it.

I think that Busa/Shinzaki vs. Rvd/Sabu is horribly overrated while the show stealer, oddly enough, was lynn/credible.

1999 compared to 1998 was a much better year for ECW IMO.

I think the Credible/Sabu match on AR99 is ***3/4.

ECW PPV's only have match historys as extras on the DVD's

I saw AAR on PPV but haven't seen it since, from what I remember it was pretty good. Heatwave '98 was great though, the tag match is very overrated and I'm a fan of all four of those wrestlers.  RVD VS Ballz is painful to watch, I think RVD VS Johnny Smith would be a hell of a lot better.

I'd reccomend getting all ECW shows you can from january till July of 1996 (skip Hostile City Showdown and Big Ass Extreme bash, they suck ass)

While it is possible that Smith/RVD would have been a better match, it was not a credible Main event but Neither was the Biggest Face vs a Mid-carder face. It Would be like Steve Austin Vs Edge. I remember Keith saying that Lynn would have been a better choice with the impromptu match...one of his rare bright ideas

I have never seen an ECW DVD, so what do you mean by match historys?  Is it text, results from other Anarchy Rulz, or footage of what led to the matches?  Thanks.

This ppv and Heatwave (98 i think...the one with the great Sabu/Van Dam tag match) were my favorite ECW ones. A must own.

Is is a great show, but i never understood RVD/Balls being main event, ends the show on a bit of a downer. The three way would have been a perfect ending to the show. Highly recommded anyhow.

I don't think Heyman wanted to end the show with a Heel victory. Thus putting his top face in an essential Mid-card match was main evented. However, I really find it diffucult that they could not find a suitable challenger for RVD. I mean Balls/Smith?

I think the Justin Credible vs. Sabu match was good, the best of the show, despite what some have had to say about the match. It was good fun. Credible caning the ring announcer before the match, the bit with the restraining order and stuff, that was good. The match itself was also good. What  is so bad about Justin Credible anyway? Storm vs Lynn wasn't very good IMO. That schmoz was pretty crap too, the one that started with Simon Diamond and stuff, although the ending was funny with New Jack beating the crap out of people with the weapons. Rvd vs Ballz was pretty bad. That tag team stuff with Raven and Dreamer vs Rhino and whoever was pretty bad, although the promo with Raven they showed before it was awesome! The three way dance for the ECW title was not as good as people say it is. The three way Cruiserweight Match wasn't very good. Anything else I've left out probably isn't relevant. Overall, a thums in the middle, leaning down show.

The match historys are text files of what led up to that particular match, it tells what angles, feuds, matches etc happened. They are from a marks point of view, probably right out of the program given at the arena the night of the show.

Oh, that sucks.  Actual footage would've been great.

What you have to keep in mind when you buy a commercial ECW video, is that Pioneer does brutal hatchet jobs on the shows to avoid paying ANY royalties.  Whole entrances are cut out to avoid playing theme songs, and when it is impossible to do that, they play a generic crowd noise, which usually not only covers up the music, but also the announcers talking.  I bought Guilty As Charged 2001 a little while ago, and only the Sandman's  (Motorhead version) and RVD's music was left in.  Guilty as Charged was chopped up so much, that the tape lasted just over 2 hours.

Are the matches themselves still complete without any editing though?

As far as I know, they are.  The tape says "uncenscored" on it, too, if that helps at all.
