Cole: "he knows that he can't beat him!

The recent Angle-Austin match a couple of Raws ago reminded me of one of the most annoying hypocritical things announcers say:

Back during the Angle-Austin Summerslam fued, as well as many face challenger vs heel champ feuds the announcers kept harping the fact that Austin KNEW that he could not beat Angle (or Jericho/Benoit back around KOR time) straight up.

So why is this fact forgotten about when Austin is back as a face and Angle/Jericho is a heel?  Now Austin is considered a favorite in the match against Jericho next week by the announcers, likewise Austin vs Angle seemed to the announcers more of an even-up matchup than the overwhelming Angle-as-the-favorite during Summerslam/No Mercy

I swear, there are times I feel like muting the TV and doing the commentary myself.

It's because Austin is a face again, and Jericho & Angle are heels. The babyface announcers job is to put over the faces. Do they look stupid when they bad-mouth a heel, then when they turn face they're good people? Yes, but that's the way it is.

Well you know.....it's just something that they do a lot. I think I've gotten used to it......but sometimes my blood boils listening to them talk. Especially Cole and Ross.

The JR/ Austin relatiopnship pisses me off.  At first (98-99) Ross is portryed as the closest thing that a "rattlesnake" like Austin will ever have to a friend.  Then after the neck surgery (2000) Austin's character is pussified and he and JR are shown to be friends, Ross said he was at Stone Cold's wedding and surgery.  The heel turn comes and Austin beats up JR and becomes "the most evil son of a bitch in the world" for 6-8 months.  Austin has a slight change of heart (rumored to have something to do with the word "What?") and now he's JR's best friend again and once again "the toughest son of a bitch in the world".

I just ignore Cole being that he is a littke bitch and all

ok I'm done

Same thing happens in matches, of course. Taker could have took Austin to school a few months back, (Taker was face, Austin was heel), but now if those two guys locked up, Taker would have to cheat to get a two count out of Austin.

Unrealistic, but what the people want to see I guess.

I hate how the announcers do that, but I agree it's the worst with Austin and Angle. When Angle was a face they were all, "Kurt Angle will NEVER give up! He's a real hero!" Now that Angle's a heel, he's "Tapping like a drum-man" every match. When Austin was heel, they were all, "What a gutless coward!" Now he's a face, and he'll "Never ever back down from a challenge."

The WWF employs "fuzzy logic" a little to much.

The problem is not so much the face announcers, although Cole sucks in other areas.  It is that they don't have a strong heel announcer to point it out.  Someone like Paul Heyman.

For example, at Wrestlemania IV the big buzz was about Randy Savage.  And Ventura of course pipes in about how he had liked Savage for years, when Gorilla was complaining about Savage being a cheater all the time.  Great stuff.

You know, Heyman was actually pretty good when he would announce with Cole. Especially when Heyman would make comments about Cole.

Heyman was the best heel announcer since Bobby Heenan.

Jesse was the ultimate heel announcer because he caught everything and had a comment about everything.

A time when I could think Lawler was being good was at Fully Loaded 2000. He ignored everything Shane did and was the perfect foil for JR.

Sadly now he's to concerned with being horny to make those comments.

Jesse is one of the best heel announcers ever. Right up there with "The Brain". I remember looking forward to Hogan matches, as Jesse always threw some great jabs at Hogan.

Oh for god's sake, wrestling has always been that way. ALWAYS! When Flair had his big face run against Funk in 89, Ross and Solie said he was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the heel announcers at the time (Corny? Sullivan? help me out here) were like, oh, screw him, but when Flair turned heel again, they switched roles. Same thing with Gorilla and the Brain, Vince and the Body, and all of them. The face announcer is there to put over the fucking face and the heel announcer is there to put over the fucking heel! If the announcers didn't switch allegiances when people turned, could you imagine the confusion we'd be having? JR would have been cheering for Stone Cold during the Alliance angle, and Heyman would be like, go Kurt, break his ankle. It wouldn't make any sense at all, dude.

Austin goes out and beats JRs ass in front of his family.  At survivor series JR hates him, THE NEXT FUCKING NITE on raw he is sucking his dick.

Now there are a few problems with this.  One being the whole 'beat up Jr in Okie' never works cause JR never gets angry and whoever beats the shit out of him he eventually loves again.

It is just another insult by the wwf on its fans intelligence.

That's the problem with the same guys (Austin, Rock, Taker) constantly being involved in the main WWF storylines.

Yeah, this is typical though. The babyface announcer always has to put over the face, and bad mouth the heel. No matter who he is. It is not realistic, but what you gonna do. The real problem here is Cole. he is one of the worst annoucers around. why not use Joey styles and fire this jackass? I agree the best heel announcer is heenan, with Ventura in close second. Heyman was great as well, the best heel announcer in recent memory. King is annoyning and pertidable. hey, I like T&A (the body parts, not thew tag team) as much the next guy, but Lawler's jokes are just immature and terminally lame. not to mention played out.

I know the face announcer has to put over the face and vilify the heel, but you can make it at least a little bit realistic. For example, face announcers shouldn't say such over-the-top things about anyone, heel or face. When Cole goes nuts over Austin today, it looks really dumb because Austin was a "gutless coward" a few months ago. Favoring the faces is fine, but use more of a "I don't agree with this" tone instead of a "he's the devil" tone when they go heel.

The great thing about Jesse was that he would criticize the face for his wrestling (taking too long to cover, jawing with the fans, Hogan's egomania, not paying attention) then call the guy an idiot. Monsoon would do the same for the heel. Those two played off each other perfectly. Watch those matches today and they're not that exciting but Monsoon-Ventura really added an extra layer of depth that wouldn't be there without them. NONE of the current announcers can do this night in and night out.
