Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted April 27, 2002 well janet jackson and aerosmith are now mtvICONS for some reason or another. who should be next? hmm metallica spoke at aerosmith's ceremony thing and i think it was obvious that James felt that they should have been honored. well next year, i hope that metallica gets to be the next mtvIcon. Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted April 27, 2002 Metallica should definitely fucking get one. Half of the damn bands MTV plays wouldn't be anywhere without Metallica's influence for an entire generation to pick up a guitar, so if MTV doesn't do it, fuck them. I'd also love to see The Ramones get one...
Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted April 27, 2002 i dont know, all those covers of metallica, i mean who wantss to hear linkin park sing fade to black?
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted April 27, 2002 hmmm... Ozzy Osbourne MetallicA Iron Maiden (Maiden on MTV? Can that actually happen?)
Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 27, 2002 I'd say Metallica is in line for 2003 ICON award (did this replace the Vanguard award?)...other possibles...MJ. RHCP. Nirvana. Beatles. Elton John.Ramones. Bon Jovi. just to name a few.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted April 27, 2002 I can't see the Beatles getting an ICON award simply because they were done as a group before MTV started (or somewhere thereabouts). MJ already got a Video Vanguard award, so does he qualify for an ICON?
Guest Narcoleptic Jumper Report post Posted April 27, 2002 I don't like 'em, but Metallica should definately get the next one.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted April 27, 2002 most likely TLC, since they are in the news.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted April 27, 2002 most likely TLC, since they are in the news. Might as well give Alice in Chains one too.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 28, 2002 Ozzy Osbourne will definitely get one now, based off the popularity of his show that just happens to be on MTV. George Clinton deserves one for sure. So does Prince.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted April 28, 2002 Well since it is MTV it would have to be some one who did alot for music videos within MTV's life. People like Ramones, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Elton John and George Clinton shouldn't get a episode. I'm not taking anything away from those people. Each of them were good in certian ways, but none of them did alot for music videos or MTV. I can't think of more then one Ramones video let alone videos mtv used. Ozzy has had many videos but MTV never made a big deal out of most of his stuff like they did with Micheal Jackson and Aerosmith. Other then Breaking the Law being one of the first videos shown Iron Maiden hasn't done anything for MTV and mtv rarely showed their videos. Elton John wasn't all that popular for much of MTV's life and i can only think of a few times mtv showed his videos, Elton was more VH1 material. Clinton hasn't had very many MTV videos, I think he directed or produced alot of mtv videos but i don't see MTV making a big special show for a video director. Bon Jovi shouldn't get one either. Sure they had some good videos but they weren't any better then the other hair bands around. I think Metallica is on the bubble as to rather they should have an episode. I'm not doubting the influence they have had. However we are talking about MTVicons not music icons. Metallica has only been an mtv band for 10 years over 3 albums. They've put out a good amount of videos in that time and have had some good mtv coverage...i just don't know if it's enough to make them an mtvicon. It's close but i can't see them getting one. Micheal Jackson should've been the subject of the first ICON show instead of Aerosmith. After all Micheal is the god of great videos. Prince is another good choice since he has done alot of high profile videos. I'm sure Madonna will get one :pukes:. I think AIC has a good chance since they have alot of good videos of great songs and one of the better unplugged shows. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nirvana get one. To wrap this up i'd like to say that i think MTV should only do a handfull of these shows and only give them to people that without a doubt deserves to be an MTV icon. Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 28, 2002 The MTV importance is critical here which explains why Janet Jackson was the first MTVIcon and then Aerosmith, whom were big prior to MTV birth and became big again thanks to Videos like Janie got a gun, Crazy, Wanna Miss a thing..ETC...Nirvana and Metallica are the top choices. TLC will be out of the news by Tuesday and until the 4th album...nobody will remember Left Eye died.
Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted April 28, 2002 i thought Nirvana would have gotten it this year being the tenth anniversary of Nervermind but i was wrong. i do think though that no band out today can cover a metallica song well.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted April 28, 2002 Actually, Mark, Cannibal Corpse covered "No Remorse," and it's been called better than Metallica's version. Although I doubt Cannibal Corpse would be on MTV... If they pick any fucking mallcore band, ESPECIALLY Papa Roach, I'm writing a letter to them saying they should have let Metallica pick the bands. I suggest just taking random people off of Metallic Assault and using them. That is a bitching CD tribute to Metallica...
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted April 28, 2002 Oh please you know MTV will only use MTV friendly bands on their own show. So unless you want Shakira and Sum41 covering Metallica i'd suggest you not encourage MTV giving them an ICON show.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted April 28, 2002 I wouldn't MIND Sum41 covering Metallica, because they're all Maiden and Slayer fans, and not punk fans at, like, all. They COULD do it right, just as long as the singer guy doesn't try to make it sound funny (unless it's "Fuel," then he can sound funny all he wants). I don't see how they could find any way for a pop act to cover a Metallica song, even their newer poppier stuff, because they know that MTV.com will be flooded with e-mails and posts on their messageboard about how it all sucked. Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted April 28, 2002 if MTV is going to go old school on their decision, you cant forget about Guns and Roses. Im sure some bands can cover "welcome to the jungle" and "paradise city" without it being paradise shitty.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 28, 2002 You can expect Creed, Sum41, Fuel, Puddle Of Mudd, Drowning Pool, Staind, SevenDust, Nickelback, Papa Roach,Linkin Park, Kid Rock and Korn to cover Metallica.
Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted April 28, 2002 i agree choken. so i guess its official, metallica is the next mtvICON as voted by the fans of the smarkboard.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted April 28, 2002 You can expect Creed, Sum41, Fuel, Puddle Of Mudd, Drowning Pool, Staind, SevenDust, Nickelback, Papa Roach,Linkin Park, Kid Rock and Korn to cover Metallica. Run-down of how Corey Lazarus feels about Choken One's suspects for covering Metallica, and what songs would be best for them to cover... Creed: I wouldn't mind it, because Mark Tremonti spent most of his youth playing Metallica covers. Just make sure Eddie Stapp doesn't try to be all Jim Morrison... "One" Sum41: Again, I wouldn't mind. The band is actually pretty talented, and the guitarist (I think he's of Indian descent) is a huge metalhead (everytime I've seen him, he's always wearing a Maiden tee). "Seek And Destroy" Fuel: No. They must not. This Rob Thomas look-alike of a singer would ruin the entire thing. "Fuel" Puddle Of Mudd: They used to be a thrash band before they got better vocally and lyrically. I'd listen to it. "Fight Fire With Fire" Drowning Pool: No. No. No. No. "I Disappear" Staind: Does Metallica have many self-loathing songs? Only extremely depressing song would be "Fade To Black." But none of them are talented enough musicians to cover it. No. Sevendust: Wouldn't mind seeing it. For as much as I'm not a fan, their songs are actually pretty good, and Lajon is bitching singer. Excellent live show. Give them "Enter Sandman." Nickelback: No. No. No. No. "Unforgiven II" Papa Roach: No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No song. Linkin Park: See "Papa Roach." Kid Rock: Wouldn't mind it, as the band is actually extremely good at playing metal. Kid Rock's signing isn't half-bad, not that good but definitely not as bad as some people make it seem. "Sad But True." Korn: THIS would be interesting. Hmm...what's a song that, regardless of how bad Korn is, is hard to mess up..."Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"
Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 28, 2002 Thank you, I truely appreciate your responses to my post. I also agree with most of your thoughts as well, and I think Creed is a pretty GREAT band when Scott is keeping it simple ("Bullets" or "Are u Ready" but is horrible when he latches onto his Jim Vedder impersonations) and "One" would limit his Morrisonisms. Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted April 28, 2002 God after hearing Kid Rock cover other songs, i would never want to hear KR do " Sad But True"(one of my favorite metallica songs.) instead, give him Turn the Page(im sure he could do ok with that. another one of my faves)
Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 28, 2002 Is it possible to Cover a Cover? Kid Rock has a knack for covering and I think Sad but True can be pulled off...
Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted April 28, 2002 Hetfield has such a deep voice and KR screams when he sings and his screaming is god awful. KR could not yell ouy "sad but true"
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted April 28, 2002 "Sad But true" can easily be done, as the band plays it live when Kid Rock does "American Badass" (of course, then the band plays "Back In Black" when Kid Rock raps the line "I like AC/DC and ZZ Top" ), and Kid Rock could always use a more raspy vocal style when singing the song. Thank you, Choken One...for your kissing of my ass in an unintentional way. Can always rely on you to stroke my ego, but also turn around and kick my ass after I make it apparent...**awaits beating**
Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 28, 2002 I'm glad that I stroked your ego. It's all I'm worth since my status as "Overhyper" Post whore has been dropkicked ever since my CPU broke at Home. I'm at work right now...
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted April 28, 2002 I can definitely see Nirvana winning an MTV icon award, but am I the only person who thinks Metallica doesn't deserve one? Hmmm... I guess so so I won't press it further. Think about what an MTV icon means, and who has received it. First off, what's an icon? An icon is usually defined as an image, which explains why Janet Jackson, who has done nothing for music (but has released some "hip" videos and singles), was the first recipient, and the sadly degraded Aerosmith the second. Given that the majority of you in this thread right now are Metallica fans, do you really want your favorite band degraded to an image? That's all an icon is... Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 29, 2002 Going by the theory that MTVicons are people who helped define music videos and MTV .... Then Busta Rhymes is definitely going to get one.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted April 29, 2002 Going by the theory that MTVicons are people who helped define music videos and MTV .... Then Busta Rhymes is definitely going to get one. Ay, how could we forget about Busta?! He, along with (my mind is blanking, I want to say Hype Williams but that doesn't sound right) helped define modern rap music videos starting with "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See". But he's just too talented to be typecast as an image... then again, Jimi Hendrix is one of the most talented guitar players ever and he's been typecast as an image (though not by MTV since they didn't have videos back then).
