Guest Ripper Report post Posted April 29, 2002 Madonna and U2 should definately get the tribute before Metallica. And how can anyone say Metallica should have gotten one before Aerosmith? Aerosmith have been doing it forever and have been MTV fixtures. Metallica WAS great and all, but I think that Aerosmith has it on longevity if nothing else. And as much as everyone wants to give Madonna props for inspiring all these young pop stars, you can them mimicing Janet Jackson's dance style and video style that made her. Hell, even Madonna did some borrowing from Janet during one of her stages. You might not be a fan, but to say that she hasn't done anything for music is stretching it a bit. I would like to see Metallica get one eventually, but I think that a hip-hop act should get one before them, seeing as we already have the pop and rock groups recieving one already. Hip-hop has shaped alot of music today and has been very influential. Hopefully it won't be LL Cool J(which it probably will) In a perfect world Rakim, Run-DMC(who brought hip-hop to the mainsteam(for better or worse...hey double parenthesis!)) or (and gawd i hate him with a passion) KRS-1 would be the reciepient. I guess so so I won't press it further. Think about what an MTV icon means, and who has received it. First off, what's an icon? An icon is usually defined as an image, which explains why Janet Jackson, who has done nothing for music (but has released some "hip" videos and singles), was the first recipient, and the sadly degraded Aerosmith the second. Given that the majority of you in this thread right now are Metallica fans, do you really want your favorite band degraded to an image? That's all an icon is... BUMP~!
