Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted April 27, 2002 If you follow hockey, Kyle McLaren of the Boston Bruins, landed a wicked, and a cheap shot, elbow towards the head of Richard Zednik. Zednik out of the playoffs with a broken nose, broken orbital bone (from what i've heard) and a serious concussion. He is still in intensive care. Now McLaren said this was an "accident" but really, McLaren was being made like a pilon, as Zednik has blown past him through out the series, and is leading Montreal in points. I'd say McLaren should be suspended for the rest of the playoffs, and half of the season of next year. Making a statement, Any cheap shots towards the head, will result in consequences. Guest cartman Report post Posted April 27, 2002 watching the Toronto/Islanders game just now I saw Gary Roberts mess up Kenny Jonson(sp?) by skating full speed at him and boarding his head into the glass...BRUTAL shot. If McLaren gets suspended for more than a couple games I will be suprised, this hit I just saw was worse and there probably wont be a suspension since it wasnt declared "Intent to Injure" NHL rules! Guest gthureson Report post Posted April 27, 2002 Hockey is still a contact sport. And guys really get tattoed in contact sports sometimes. They called it 'Intent', which is a match, which is 5 games. If they want to set a precendent and give him 25 or 30 games during the playoffs, then Roberts will have to get 10-20 for his. And during the season next year, guys will have to get 50-60. Funny, guys never needed 'A message from the league....' about cheap shots until they put in the instigator rule. Guest DrEvil Report post Posted April 27, 2002 I believe McLaren when he says the hit was accidental, he made an off balance move and instinctively put his arm out. Having said that, he should be suspended at least 5 games (20 if it were regular season) for the careless act. Intentional or not, it was a brutal hit that caused severe injury. On to the Roberts/Jonnson hit. I believe that McLaren should be suspended because the incident was 100% his fault due to his carelessness. Roberts should not be suspended for that hit because he wasn't careless on it. He was going for a hard check and Jonnson turned into it with his head down. It was a hard and brutal hit, but it was a hockey hit. Scott Stevens won the Conn Smythe two years ago for throwing hits like that.

Zednik clearly had McLaren beat, and the only way for McLaren to stop Zednik with a good scoring chance was to stick the arm out. Also Zednik had his head down, as he had no chance seeing that elbow coming at his head. Players who play dirty (not too mention the team. Typical Boston style) should never be playing in the NHL. Sure the game is meant to be physical, cheap shots are not meant to be a physical part of the game.

Guest DrEvil Report post Posted April 27, 2002 The Bruins can eat shit, die, and rot in hell, but I don't really hate them. I was just saying that he didn't throw the elbow with the intent to injure him, he was beat and instinctively threw his arm out to stop him. Still deserving of a major suspension, but not something that he should be hung from his balls for. The physical play is one of the things that makes hockey great. Occasionally in a rough physical game, these things happen.

OK, first off, Boston doesn't play a cheap style, you want cheap hockey hits, go watch a Flyers game. Secondly, you, and Michele Therien are the only two people who have stated that it's a dirty hit. It was a hard, nasty hit, but it was a defensive hit. The same thing could be said of the crosschecking that goes on in front of the net on Powerplays. McLaren did what was best for his team, Zednik got hurt? That's hockey. Calling McLaren and Boston dirty for what they did is ridiculous, McLaren will be suspended for 5 playoff games, and no regular season games. Also, you made me burst out laughing when you said that McLaren should get suspended for half the season next year. Tie Domi got 8 games for almost legally killing Scott Niedermeyer last year, so Kyle getting more than 5 games next year would suprise me.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 28, 2002 The hit clearly wasn't as bad as Tie Domi's elbow, or McSorley's stick to the head. I don't even watch hockey that much, and I've seen worse and more intentional hits in just the past month or so. The reason everyone says it was so bad is because of Zednik's violent reaction. If he'd just spun around and stayed on his feet, or even not fell so hard, it wouldn't be a big deal. So the impact was more a result of Zednik's speed. McLaren just stuck his arm out. Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted April 28, 2002 OK, first off, Boston doesn't play a cheap style, you want cheap hockey hits, go watch a Flyers game. How long have you been watching hockey, or how much history do you know about Hockey? Every time Boston goes into the playoffs (mainly against Montreal) Boston always tried to take out the leading scorers of Montreal. They hit from behind, high stick, cheap shots, run the goalie in almost every playoff series they played against. Typical Bruins playoff style. This was way back during Bobby Orr's days too. I'm laughing at this statement. McLaren was beat by Zednik, and Zednik had a clear path towards the net. McLaren's only attempt was to stick his arm out to knock down Zednik. Cross checking in front of the net is part of the game, its trying to get the opposing team away from the goalie, and rebounds. Thats hockey. Sticking out an arm while the game is done for no apparent reason, thats dirty. Calling McLaren and Boston dirty for what they did is ridiculous, McLaren will be suspended for 5 playoff games, and no regular season games. Hmm...five games? Hah. Lets see, cheap hit, head shot, attempt to injure, in the playoffs, and Zednik's career on the line. Five games? #### I don't think he should be playing at all with that kind of hit. Also, you made me burst out laughing when you said that McLaren should get suspended for half the season next year. Tie Domi got 8 games for almost legally killing Scott Niedermeyer last year, so Kyle getting more than 5 games next year would suprise me. Worse? No, really. Zednik was lying motionless, being taken off a stretcher, put in intensive care unit, getting the second worst concussion you can ever get, and his playing career is uncertain. Not to mention a broken nose, cuts on his face, and a damage orbital bone. Ya Neidermayer was way worse.

Actually I've been watching hockey for about 14 years now (I'm only 19) and do realize history, but calling McLaren a dirty player is imbecilic and wrong. Yes, Zednik had Kyle beat, he had a clear path to the net, therefore as a DEFENSEman, Kyle DEFENDED his team from a goal. Zednik will be fine. To use your "hockey history" crap, Pierre Turgeon, after his viscious hit from Dale Hunter, he, wait, that's right, he's still playing. Oh, and Kris Draper, after a hit by Claude Lemeuix that broke his goddamn face, yeah he still plays too. You're really the only person that seems to be throwing the book at Kyle with "intent to injure and ICU and boo hoo". Zednik will be back, Kyle will get his, move on. Oh, yeah, suspension for the rest of the series with Montreal. Half the year, you say?
