Sorry dude, Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello are great songwriters, NOT great vocalists.

Only one singer comes to mind and that's Freddy Mercury. Any range, any style, any note, he could do it.

Morrissey. Amazing how his voice gets to me. Like no other vocalist i've ever heard. His lyrics were amazing as well. Others are Chris Cornell, Serj, Maynard and Michele Graves from the misfits.

Costello has a lot of range and has gotten significantly better as his music has become more diverse.  I stand by my opinion.  Dylan is just Dylan--the first vocalist to acheive any measure of mainstream success with a voice that isn't initially pleasing to the ear.  But his voice was absolutely perfect for the sort of songs that he wrote--he's since lost it entirely--and that's what I was basing this on, as opposed to their vocal range or classical training.  If we're doing it on range, then give it to Prince and be done with it.

Annke-The Gathering (the best pure singer in the history of Rock music.)

Mike Patton-Mr. Bungle, Faith No More(He can sing, rap, scream, whatever. Most immitated vocalists in history.)

Stephen Brodsky-Cave In (the only guy currently in music, who can sing high, and not sound like a bitch. He can also  out scream most.)

Nathan Grey-Boy Sets Fire(The best pure singer in the history of punk music. Aside from Danzig)

Akerfeldt-Opeth(perfect death growl, also has nice clean vocals.)

Reverend Steve Austin-Today is the Day(best screamer ever.)

Compaired to Freddie Mercury, Bruce Dickinson, Mike Patton, Marynard James Keenan. Hell Mustaine, Hetfield, Halford, Ozzy have a better voice than Cobain. Corgan, Morrison, Lennon. They all were better. Staley was better than Cobain.

Cobain just sucked, no range, and if he did try to scream his voice cracks.

Jeff Buckley, Tim Buckley, Chris Cornell, Thom Yorke, Lou Reed (VU era), Kurt Cobain.

Reed and Cobain may not technically have been the greatest singers, but I think that their voices fit their music perfectly. I don't think anyone could argue with the vocal talents of the Buckleys and Cornell, unless you happen to be an idiot.

Billy Corgan's nasal whine isn't better than anything.  Cobain's vocals were raw fucking power, mang.

Ive been considering the Cobain situation all day and the only real songs where he has a good voice is:

Come as you are, all apologies, and heart shaped box(i know im leaving out a couple)

listen to lithium, im bloom, smells like teen spirit, and countless others and tell me his voice doesnt get annoying. he moans through most of his songs and his voice does crack alot.

Tobias Sammet - Edguy. Beautiful voice, especially when he comes all out at the apex on some of his ballads.

Bruce Dickinson (apart from the years around "No Prayer for the Dying". He just plain sucked back then) - Iron Maiden. Quite possibly the best True Metal vocalist ever.

Tarja Turunen - Nightwish - Amazing voice, but needs to work on the diction. Basically sings opera to Power Metal.

Joe Cocker. Ignore the newer stuff (even if he finally got the voice right again on his cover of "First we take Manhattan"). Just take a listen to his version of "With a Little Help from my Friends".

Leonard Cohen.

Nick Cave. Incredible that someone who is such a lousy singer can sing so great...

Your pick of the three vocalists who have sung with Savatage. John Oliva probably gets the nod, thanks to being the most intense vocalist I've ever heard. I dear anyone to listen through "Streets" or "Gutter Ballet" without a shiver crossing your back. Zak Stevens was great - and one of the few Meal vocalists who sunf deep vocals. The new guy (whose name I can't remember) is almost ridiculously great - the presence, the feel, the range, a beautiful voice and still capable of shrieks like no other.

How exactly do you define a great vocalist? Does he have to be a singer or a rapper like the guy in Linkin Park? Some vocalists just scream and stuff, and some other don't even have range or no falssetto or staccato.

I may be the only one here but I've always liked Steve Perry in Journey. He has such an unique voice and great range.

Paul Stanley is a very underrated singer IMO. He can (or could, anyway) hit all the high notes, and he could really, really sing. Same goes with Bruce Dickinson in his prime.

Sebastian Bach and Axl Rose were great rock vocalists in their time. Also Rob Halford (Bach kinda sounded like him.)

Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder are also great singers. I haven't heard much Tool but he sounds great too.

And as much as I love Nirvana, no way Cobain was a good vocalist. You could hear him strainning all over the place.
