MLB HOF Class of 2005

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure why Sutter is so much more popular than Gossage. Maybe the creation of the split-finger fastball?

Sutter popularized the pitch, but by his own account he didn't invent it.

I agree. I also don't think anyone listed on the veterans committe is really deserving. These are good players..guys like Tony Olivia could of been great but injuries happen. You can't vote by what might have been.

I really think Ron Santo deserves the Hall. His career numbers are deserving when you account for the fact that he played during the second dead ball era. I've also heard an interesting case for Minnie Minoso, that he very likely would have HOF numbers if not for the color line (he debuted in 1949 at the age of 26).

Did not know that.

Minoso very likely? That's the problem. There's no guarantee Minoso would have had HOF numbers.

The HOF should look at voting in more Negro League players. I can't believe they've found all the HOF worthy Negro league players.

The easiest explanation for Sutter and Gossage. Gossage=Asshole.

Well, Minoso was as great in his 30s as anyone else in baseball history. He didn't get started until he was 28 because of the color line. Now the argument isn't that Minoso would have been a great player in his 20s. The argument is that Minoso WAS a great player in his 20s, but he didn't get an opportunity because of the color line. He's screwed because his career straddles 1947. Minoso would have needed 1,037 hits for 3,000. Give him a full career, and he could reach it. Keep in mind this isn't my argument. I'm just repeating it.

I figured I'd post this here since Dave Concepcion is still on the HOF ballot. Latest words of wisdom from Joe Morgan.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor..._joe&id=1848472

If you're considering offense and defense and team leadership, Concepcion still might be the best all-around shortstop ever -- not counting A-Rod, since he's a third baseman now.

Now I know he's biased because they were teammates but...is Joe smoking crack?

Most players are. Frankie Frisch elected many of his teammates (Jim Bottomley, George Kelly, Ross Youngs, Fred Lindstrom, Chick Hafey, Jesse Haines) when he sat on the veterans' committee.

That's some crazy thinking by Morgan there. Concepcion isn't even comparable to Honus Wagner, Ernie Banks, Cal Ripken, Arky Vaughn, and even Alan Trammel among others. I'd sooner like to see Bert Campaneris or Vern Stephens go in before Concepcion, and I know, and hope that will never happen. I also know that at induction ceremony, Bench also commented that he wanted Concepcion in the hall.

Since I did the 2005 newly eligible players, I might as well do 2006. There are probably no future HOF's on this list although a few guys who looked like HOF's at certain points in there career. In case your wondering to be eligible for the HOF you only had to play 10 years, since you might ask yourself "why the hell is Jaime Navarro on a HOF ballot?"

One addition I will add to the bottom of the list. The HOF's official site doesn't list this player on the future elections list although his last year was 2000 but he was under contract through 2003 so I'm not sure how that will work as to when they are eligible.
