Guest SP-1 Report post Posted August 19, 2004 jig, we may differ on our political views. But we're brothers in this thread, good sir. If I can find the money, I'm definitely getting this. While I'm a mark for Kirk in the movies, I'm a bigger mark for the series Kirk. Shatner grounded him alot in the movies, adapted the age well to the character, IMO. But in the series, I love seeing the young, brash, but compassionate Kirk in the Big Chair. He's just a great character on-screen. There's a small part of me that kind of wishes we'd have gotten to see more of Jeff Hunter's Pike. But I'm glad that he was acknowledged later in TOS, and I'm glad The Menagerie seems to have not been discarded from the timeline. It was a pretty good episode. Not as "together" as TOS would become, but a pretty good Pilot. And smiling Spock~!

When I was a kid, I started watching the Next Generation... and not because I wanted to. I had a friend that was OBSESSED with Trek and I thought he was the biggest nerd in the world and wanted nothing to do with it. But one day, I decided to give in, and I was hooked from then on. Of course, after that , it was all down hill... at age 11, while most kids were playing cops and robbers on the playground, I was playing Star Trek with a group of 7 other nerdy outcasts. Everyone thought we were nuts, but we didn't really care! I even got into trouble a few times for stealing calculators from the classroom to use them as tri-corders... Anyway, I didn't like the original series at first, but it too grew on me, and now I can't really even stomach watching the other series, including TNG. The original series just has this magical, cool quality about it. Even my friends who aren't big Sci-Fi fans dig it I feel like a nerd all over again

Guest SP-1 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 Yeah, I got into TNG around 4th or 5th grade. Came on every day with a new episode on Fridays. Played Trek many times in my backyard, especially once I got ahold of the sweet Enterprise-D toy and a Tricorder toy. I got into TOS much later, but it's grown on me over time. I still think DS9 wound up the superior all around show. But TOS is definitely right up there with it, and TNG. Voyager and Enterprise don't exist in my world. I still have some of my old trek toys around the house somewhere... but I'm way too lazy to dig them out, and even if I did, I'd feel like a loser I didn't get into DS9 until the very end, and I agree, it was an amazing show that didn't get the props it should have while it was on the air... and it's going to be a while until it probably gets the credit it deserves. If I had the money, I'd buy the dvd sets and catch up on the episodes I missed
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted August 20, 2004 When I actually have the money to start buying Trek sets, I probably won't purchase the first few seasons of DS9. I wasn't a big fan until the Dominion actually became a threat. When they rammed the Oddyssey was possibly the turning point in the series. I'd definitely want the War in it's entirety, though. Avery Brooks was on Patrick Stewart levels there for a while as far as his acting. Unfortunately, when i was a kid my Enterprise D "crashed". Meaning it got slammed in a door accidentally and stopped making noise, so we burned it. I have the INSURRECTION Ent-E, however, which will be displayed in my room this semester. Proudly. Along with my Ecto-1 model. And my future DeLorean models. I'm such a geek. Oddly enough, I'm not sure I'd want to get very many of the TNG sets. It was a great show, but only those last few seasons really seemed to be completely solidified to me. The characters were firmly in place and intertwined, which is usually what interests me the most. It's also why DS9 beats out TNG to me. Such good character stuff there, especialyl with the continuing storyline of the War. I have zero desire to buy a Voyager set. If "Endgame" is ever on a single DVD, I might consider buying it. Just because it was actually decent and did something outside of the "OMG WE'RE LOST AND NEED TO GET HOME -- LOOK TEH BORG" box. Not far outside of that box, but far enough to be interesting. I got to actually see the episode with Zefram Cochrane this morning on Sci-Fi channel. I've wanted to see that since First Contact. It was actually really well. the guy who played the younger, rejuvinated Cochrane was a really good actor, going for a more natural approach, and not the usual super-impassioned Trek fare. It actually contrasted healthily with Shatner's Kirk. It was good to see Kirk challened by simple circumstances and not by an actual enemy. Even the energy being wasn't a total villain.
