A weak opening for a weak set of movies.

AvP collapsed in on itself, Without a Paddle opened without an audience, Open Water continues to do well, and Spiderman 2 moves within 5 million of Passion for 8th and Shrek 2 will finish 3rd in the US overall.

Meanwhile Spiderman 2 looks to finish well behind Spiderman, unless the film can pull in another 38 million dollars.

I need to pay more attention. I don't think I have seen one commercial for the Exorcist or Without a Paddle, and I actually have been watching tv more than usual lately. Then again, from the sounds of it, this was a pretty terrible weekend for movies anyway.

That's odd...I know there are A LOT of Without a Paddle commercials. Especially on Spike TV if you watch RAW..they seem to have one on spike every other commercial.

And the Exorcist commercial..I've also seen a lot, I just never really realize it's the exorcist commercial..because the first set they had, had a bunch of scenes with a priest..and someone tomb raiding...but the newer commercials have some lady in a house..so for a minute I was thinking they were two different movies.

On one hand I'm sad that piece of shit Exorcist movie came in #1. On the other hand, since it meant keeping Without a Paddle out of the #1 spot, I'm ok.

Meh. Without a Paddle is just a harmless, dumb comedy (and it knows it), while Exorcist is a boring piece of shit that was in development for over five years.

18 million--good, glad that shitty Exorcist bastardization did so poorly. Hopefully the lack of reviews and word of mouth warnings helped. Although it may have been the lack of commercials for it.

Lucky you, I couldn't get away from WAP ads.

Not really--the "real" Exorcist: the Beginning has already been made. It's going to be released on DVD either with or at the same time as the current version.

The original version wasn't liked by WB because it was more psychological instead of a brainless gorefest, so they hated it.

So poorly? That is a pretty decent opening night, especially for a rated R movie.

I believe the studio has $35 million into the first cut of The Exorcist: Beginning and $50 million into the cut that went onto the screens. So they're a long ways away from making money on this, #1 opening or not.
