Guest pochorenella Report post Posted April 30, 2002 The title says it all. Here are my picks: 1. Guns N' Roses Appetite For Destruction 2. Van Halen Van Halen 3. Pearl Jam Ten 4. Kiss Kiss 5. Gin Blossoms New Miserable Experience I might be forgetting someone, but anyway. As much as I love Kiss, and their first album has a lot of all-time classics, I cannnot rank their debut any higher. Those songs just sound better live. But Alive! is and always will be the best live album ever. Also, my number 5 pick will shock/surprise many, but this is my thread SO THERE! Ok, people, let's see your choices. Peace.

Guest Kinetic Report post Posted April 30, 2002 I'm shocked that no one's mentioned Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True. Shocked, I tell you! Then, of course, there's The Velvet Underground and Nico. And, shit, Surfer Rosa has to be included on any list. I could go on and on.
Guest Mystery Eskimo Report post Posted April 30, 2002 You may not be surprised to know that I was about to mention My Aim Is True. Also, the Stone Roses debut.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted April 30, 2002 um...why did you feel the need to exclude Britney and Backstreet Boys when the title already excluded them? Guest swan Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Kid Rock - Devil Without A Cause That was actually his fourth release. "Grit Sandwiches for Breakfest" released in 1990 was his debut.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Its kind of tricky to make out whats a debut album or not from some people.... keep in mind Kid Rock may have had releases before Grits put out independently.. most people dont realize that Everlast (from House of Pain) had stuff out before the House of Pain stuff or Whitey Ford.. Plus you could have demos from local bands before they break big.. its a little subject to your point of view is all..

But I don't recognize the latter 2 albums you mention, who are those? Velvet Underground and Nico is the Velvet Underground, obviously. Surfer Rosa is the Pixies first full-length. It was predated by the Come On Pilgrim EP, but I won't count that if you don't.

"Grits" was released on Jive and the next two independantly. I think you can say debut album or major label debut album and run two different threads. But for me any album avaible nationwide is a debut album. a bands first album often contains reworked songs from the demo's that got them signed. I would also like to add Napalm Death-Scum and Iron Maiden-Iron Maiden to the list.
Guest muzanisa Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Grace - Jeff Buckley I don't really like my Aim is True. It has it's moments but.....
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Grace - Jeff Buckley I don't really like my Aim is True. It has it's moments but..... Agreed, as far as Buckley goes. The Costello point is a moot one, as any debut album featuring "Allison," "Less Than Zero," and "Watching the Detectives" would deserve to make this list. Also: The Clash's self-titled debut and Clinic's Internal Wrangler.
Guest muzanisa Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Off the top of my head Detectives was on Model wasn't it? Or possibly on the US release of Aim. prefer bollocks to the Clash (and I'm grateful I'm posting on a US board when saying that) Kinetic have you got my parcel yet? Guest Kinetic Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Off the top of my head Detectives was on Model wasn't it? Or possibly on the US release of Aim. Kinetic have you got my parcel yet? "Watching the Detectives" wasn't on the original version of MAIT, but it's been on every subsequent version. Given that I was born in 1983, it's a part of that album as far as I'm concerned. I haven't received the package yet, no. I wait by the mailbox every day, too. Wait and wait and wait.
Guest muzanisa Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Please don't tell me that there's nothing very exciting in it. Have you got the Rhino releases? they're worth it.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Have you got the Rhino releases? they're worth it. I only have enough money for cigarettes and gas, at this point. Once I get a job, I'm all over them. I did buy MAIT, which I already had the Ryko re-issue of, and This Year's Model. Both great, obviously, and the liner notes are hilarious/enlightening. What of the rest would you suggest getting? I've heard All This Useless Beauty and Brutal Youth are good, but Spike is not. Blood and Chocolate, I already own and I'm not so fond of that era of his career that I want to buy another copy just for the second disk. Also: Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted. Guest muzanisa Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Both Beauty and Youth are great. Spike I'm a Jazz fan so I like it but it's not instantly accessable the second disc is a lot more stripped down. Are you going to any of the live shows in the States?
Guest Report post Posted April 30, 2002 There has never been a greater debut album than the Velvet Underground's Velvet Underground and Nico. What's more amazing is that their following two albums were even better.

Guest pochorenella Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Velvet Underground and Nico is the Velvet Underground, obviously Ooops. I thought Nico was another album. Sorry about that. I knew I forgot somebody. Put me down with Sixteen Stone by Bush. That album somehow always seems to get back to my car stereo.
