Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted May 1, 2002 I'll second, third, fourth, whatever the votes for Grace, My Aim Is True, The Clash, Surfer Rosa, Slanted & Enchanted, and Appetite for Destruction, and throw in a couple of my own: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (surpassed by 2 quite quickly, but still fantastic) Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine (a bit recent, but one of the fiercest, purest rock albums to come out of the 90's. Sure, there's rapping, but by god, those riffs are amazing) Unfortunately, you guys have already snagged most of the biggies. Most artists have a good debut, but their second or third album totally blows that one out of the water, so it's easy to forget...

Guest Mystery Eskimo Report post Posted May 1, 2002 I think Murmur by REM deserves a mention. IMO, with the excepetion of Up, they've never surpassed it.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted May 2, 2002 A Perfect Circle- Mer De Noms It debuted at #4 on the billboards, the highest ever for a rock debut album Humm, I didn't remember that fact, and I consider myself a Billboard freak. But that one's kind of unfair since everybody knew Tool's singer was in it. And keeping with the Billboard theme, the very first Hard Rock debut album to reach #1 was Quiet Riot's Metal Health back in 1983(82?). The next one was Guns N' Roses mighty Appetite many years later. And another Billboard fact, the best-selling rock debut ever is Boston's with 16 million copies. I also like that one but not more than my first picks.
