Gin Blossoms New Miserable Experience I might be forgetting someone, but anyway. As much as I love Kiss, and their first album has a lot of all-time classics, I cannnot rank their debut any higher. Those songs just sound better live. But Alive! is and always will be the best live album ever. Also, my number 5 pick will shock/surprise many, but this is my thread SO THERE! Guest converge241 Report post Posted April 30, 2002 Its kind of tricky to make out whats a debut album or not from some people.... keep in mind Kid Rock may have had releases before Grits put out independently.. most people dont realize that Everlast (from House of Pain) had stuff out before the House of Pain stuff or Whitey Ford.. But I don't recognize the latter 2 albums you mention, who are those? Velvet Underground and Nico is the Velvet Underground, obviously. Surfer Rosa is the Pixies first full-length. "Grits" was released on Jive and the next two independantly. I think you can say debut album or major label debut album and run two different threads. But for me any album avaible nationwide is a debut album. a bands first album often contains reworked songs from the demo's that got them signed. The Costello point is a moot one, as any debut album featuring "Allison," "Less Than Zero," and "Watching the Detectives" would deserve to make this list. "Watching the Detectives" wasn't on the original version of MAIT, but it's been on every subsequent version. Given that I was born in 1983, it's a part of that album as far as I'm concerned. I did buy MAIT, which I already had the Ryko re-issue of, and This Year's Model. Both great, obviously, and the liner notes are hilarious/enlightening. What of the rest would you suggest getting? I've heard All This Useless Beauty and Brutal Youth are good, but Spike is not. Blood and Chocolate, I already own and I'm not so fond of that era of his career that I want to buy another copy just for the second disk. Also: Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted.
