This Week in College Football 9/2-9/6

HOWEVER, that still doesn't change the fact that there were blown calls on BOTH sides, including one that should have put LSU up by 2 with seconds left in the 4th quarter.

What call was that?

OSU's touchback after LSU tied the game with less than a minute left in the 4th quarter.

OSU's kick returner got the ball in the end zone, started running, then stopped and kneeled the ball after one of his defenders stopped him. The only problem was that he stepped out of the end zone and onto the goal line, meaning that it should have been a safety instead of a touchback.

Another thing that worried me about my game. Ok wait a minute. Did anyone besides me watch the OU/BGSU game?

OU's defense just didn't have a chip on it's shoulder it seemed. They didn't seem mean and they didn't seem nasty. They had some decent coverage but it seemed sometimes like they weren't covering anybody. And then there was the fact that they missed some tackles and they never layed into anybody. I didn't see one hit really that made me cringe. Maye one and it was where an OU Offensive lineman just took a BGSU defensive lineman off his feet and knocked his helmet off. And OU used to do things like unneccessary roughness and such just to prove a point and look intimidating. They didn't do that. They seemed really.......really relaxed.

Did anyone notice any of this I'm talking about?

The weekend is almost over, with Fresno State taking a chunk out of Washington and Tennessee starting to put away UNLV. If Tennessee holds on, the big surprise for me will be that we got through the entire weekend without any top-25 upsets. Memphis over Ole Miss and BYU over Notre Dame are our only real "surprises," and those aren't even big stretches. Fun start of the year, if a bit pedestrian.

Memphis beat Mississippi with Eli Manning last year so I don't consider that an upset. They have a good shot at the Conference USA title this year. Probably the biggest upset yesterday was Troy State beating Marshall.

Score of the day from yesterday: UAB 56, Baylor 14. Now UAB isn't that bad, they have an outside shot at a bowl bid, but it's time for the Big 12 to give Baylor the boot.

Baylor made it into the Big 12 over Houston for pure political reasons from what I've heard.

(IIRC, former Texas Governor Ann Richards had ties to Baylor and the Big 8 had to take them in addition to Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech in order to minimize potential political roadblocks to the new Big 12.)

They'd have to have another team lined up to take their place and, the way things are looking, the only team in the Big 12's footprint that could bring anything to the conference are either TCU, which has gone through 3 conferences in about 5 years, and Arkansas, which is currently a part of the SEC.

Personally, I don't see Arkansas bolting for the Big 12 unless their cut of the revenue increases and I don't think that a majority of the Big 12 would want to deal with TCU.

I don't think Arkansas will join the Big 12, since I've read that there's a lot of bitterness between Arkansas and the three Texas schools(Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech) dating back to the days of the Southwest Conference and Frank Broyles(the Arkansas AD) getting Arkansas into the SEC, since many believe that move killed the old SWC.

Reports say that Hurrican Ivan could push back FSU/MIA AGAIN. Man, I'd HATE to be in Florida.

I saw some of it, but it's nothing to worry about. Bowling Green isn't a pushover. Oklahoma was always in control, but they still had to play a good team. They looked fine, and I'm not surprised if they were relaxed - it was the first game of the season, and, ranked #2 in the nation, they had very little to prove.

As for not going for "unnecessary roughness" to intimidate, well, good. Less thugs, more football.

Yeah I suppose so. The offense was tremendous. The tackling is what worried me b/c that's what caused a lot of problems in the Big XII title game and the Sugar Bowl was missing tackles left and right.

I dunno. They showed this video before the game on the big screen playing "here comes the BOOM" or whatever that song is called and showing OU pound the shit out of people last season and I was just hyped for someone to get smashed hard.

HA! I walked by the practice field today and I heard one of the coaches yelling and he said "If I see one fucking missed tackle on Saturday someone is going to pay!"
