Guest The Son of Sting Posted April 30, 2002 Report Posted April 30, 2002 I have been watching loads if UFC TV recently and the tap outs confuse me a bit. It seems that the second a submission hold is put on a fighter taps. Is it because when they get caught in a hold they tap right away rather than risk injury? Im sure that has to be it.

Last week there were four bouts which ended with the armbar and in each case it was when they were wrenched that they tapped. Severn who was refereeing stopped one bout when it was applied and locked but before he was strecthed. If you think of it as an athletic contest then the very fact that they've got in posistion to put on a submission hold indicates victory so there is no need to actually injure the other guy with it. Also those things hurt and are very hard to break and would probably damage you so you'd be useless even if you could escape; so it makes sense to get out of it as quickly as possible.

Its just not wise to attempt it because it is really rare to get out of it. At the last UFC ppv (not ultimate submissions) Matt Serra had this 'dude' in a choke that was really sunk in, but the bitch got out! Then Serra had him in an Armbar, but the bitch got out! Finally he was put in a triangle choke and was fucked.
