My brother asked me this. If a white person from Africa is a U.S. citizen and wins a tournament or any sort of sporting event can you say an African-American won.

Interesting. I never thought of that. I'd imagine you could in all means but I don't any intelligent sportscaster would say that.

Right.  Nor would any intelligent person ask it in the first place.

oooohhh TAG!!!

But seriously, no.  African-American doesn't really pertain to someone that is from Africa.  It is a accepted politically correct term for black americans of african decent.  Most african americans aren't from africa.

I'm sorry but that was the single most unintentionally funny line that has been muttered on WWF television in a while.  WHAT DID THAT EVEN MEAN!!!!

So it's a politically correct term for a black person, because calling someone black was deemed offensive, but it only applies to black people, regardless of their descent.  Makes perfect sense to me.

Well, it should make perfect sense.  Its not about being from africa, it is a term to describe the race.  If you are black, eventually you are going to find african roots.  The term applies to those whom are considered black or in other words have come from african decent.  A white person from africa is still a caucasion(sp?) they are just from Africa.

It means that Lita was high when she said that.

Where's Akeem the African Dream and Slick when you need them?

Seriously, though, the correct term you're looking for is ABA: American-Born African.  Works for other races and nationalities as well (e.g. CBC: Canadian-Born Chinese), although palindromic acronyms aren't required.

Eventually ripper, you are going to find African roots for everybody.  White, Black, Hispanic, or Chinese.

"Gee Doc that's harsh."

No, it's true.  Tell your brother he posed a dumb question.  I can't even fathom how someone would think it an actual conversation piece.

I got an idea, and im just spit balling here, but how bout we refer to someone for who they are, like me, Im an American, this is where I was born. I have friends from many differnt races, and they all call themselves americans. When was the last time you heard someone refer to themselves as a caucasion-american.

actually I consider myself as Black american even though I dont mind being refered as an african american even though I havent trace my ancestry so I cant take that title yet, and plus the current africans look down on us for taking that title because some of them dont consider themselves black they consider themselves africans.

I think all these hyphanated titles are stupid and many times inacurate, Colin Powell is refered to as African-American, despite being of Jamaican desent, i realize that his family was probably brought there but his more acturate title should be Jamaican-American.  If you're born in America or an American citezen then you're an American, IMO.

That's true.

I thought I read or heard some where that people in Central and South America call themselves Americans. If this is true it doesn't make alot of sense.

This should probably be moved to a different folder.

Moved from Sports to General Chat, for reasons that should be obvious.

My school social worker once told me that one time she had a few black kids in her room to talk about a fight they were in.  The fight stemed from racial tension, trying to be politically correct, she called them African American.  It ends up they (and many other black people) take offense to that term because they can be from the Carribean, France, etc.

Back to the original post, I think you could call a white African in America an African American.  They were from Africa and now reside in America, so why not call them that?

Supposedly the first ever hominids originated in Africa, so that would make everyone African American.  Very interesting stuff here...
