Best of japan 2001

Hey Smarks...

I'm guessing the questions im about to ask have been asked a MILLION times but hell, im gonna do it anyway and hope some kind soul helps the ole Taker Mark out...

Firstly, does anyone OWN the 6-tape Best of Japan set? If so DONT GO ANYWHERE...read on!

1. Dumb Australian question - Is the entire thing in complete Japanese? (that means no english at all on the tape for all you New Zealanders out there)

2.Is it worth 140 bucks? (thats what it costs for an Australian to buy it)

3. How long is each tape?

4.Anything else Japanese related that you would reccommend?

Thank you SINCERLY for you time in reading this! Any feedback will be GREATLY appreciated!

This has been the oriental Taker Mark.

I don't know what you're talking about, but whatever it is, it sounds too expensive.

Every puroresu tape I own has Japanese commentary, with the exception of the '95 Super J Cup, which has no commentary.  There also may be a couple others that don't have any commentary, but I forget.

A word of advice would be to stick to 1990's Japanese wrestling--you'll find the great stuff during THAT decade.

He's talking about the tape set Kieth is going through and reviewing, its available from Golden Boy tapes. I ain't seen it myself, but if you are interested in puroresu from 2001 then this is probly worth your cash if you can spare it.

Wolverine's right though, just like the WWF, puroresu has taken a hit in quality recently, so if you are really interested in Japanese wrestling, pick up some stuff from the 90's.

Pick up Super J Cups 94 & 95 to start with - that's what nearly everyone will tell you, and they'll be considerably cheaper than this tape set.

Eh...the J-Cups (all 3) can be reduced down to a 2:40 comp to get the necessary matches.  Basically all the Liger except the Fuji match from 94, all the Dos Caras, all the Sasuke, Teioh/Usuda, and the Dragon/Ohtani match.  You can skip the rest and not miss a thing.

Benoit vs. Eddy from '94 and Benoit vs. Jericho from '95 are pretty good.

Just out of curiousity, do you know if the Super J cup from 2000 is any good?

And also, i hear Vader works wonders in Japan, any quality NOAH videos which showcase Vader's talent that you know of?

Thanks again!

J Cup 2000 was pretty good, definately worth buying, but not to the standard of the other two. I dont know about Vader, but I heard a match of his against Akiyama was quite good recently... a bit vague of me there, ah well.

Meh, some of us like to have whole shows, especially the J Cups and other tournaments, as some matches build from each other, even if they don't have the same wrestlers in them.

Okay if you're new to Puroresu then don't bother with the 6 tape set, after all you may not like it and end up with all those useless tapes :)

I suggest you buy one of Bob Barnett's awesome Japan TV blocks. If you enjoy that then come back and ask what to get next, I'm sure everyone will help you out. The link is:

I don't know how it can be called the "best" of Japan 2001, when it doesn't even have the Match of the Year IMO (Ito vs. Nakanishi 9/16) or any other joshi stuff for that matter.  But whatever....

Yeah that kind of destroyd the whole logic behind a best of 2001 series, however the WKMedia situation may have came into play as far as the AJW footage was concerned, when did they buy the rights?

I don't know one way or the other about that situation.

I'll agree about the Benoit matches - but he had stuff just as good on free TV in Nitro's heyday with Eddy and Dean (though he never had a match w/ Jericho as good as J-Cup).  I remember an opener before HH 97 with Benoit and Eddy that was as good as the 94 match.  I think I'd mostly agree with the "Eddy as best in North America" sentiment at that point.  Just had good matches with everydamnbody (though the stuff w/ Dean was no ECW redux).  Why he and Jericho haven't teamed up at any point in the WWF, I don't know; they were my favorite cowardly heel team for a while and knew how to engage an audience.

Hell yeah--Benoit and Eddy always tore it up in WCW.  The J Cup match actually isn't one of my favorites from those two, partially because it was too short and the finish wasn't any good.  Still worth seeing though.

Actually, I think Benoit '96 is just as good or better than Eddy '97.
