Guest MikeSC Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 I'm not familiar with Weimar. Too many parties getting a (disorganized) voice? Basically, there were Communists and Nazis on the fringes, and nearly a dozen parties in the center who couldn't agree on a damned thing, permitting the Communists and Nazis to tie up the Reichstag, forcing the gov't to rule by fiat rather than by the legislature. Nobody could pass a law from about 1930 on --- and many historians tie the ruling by fiat to an acceptance of dictatorial control. The vast number of centrist parties effectively paralyzed the center. Weimar is ALSO why most Parliamentary systems have rules forbidding parties who oppose the Constitution from running any longer. -=Mike
Hogan Made Wrestling Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 The Weimar Republic is a great example of why pure democracy doesn't work, and why checks and balances have to be implemented.
The Mandarin Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 Excuse me. I'm going to go watch something on PAX. It'll kill fewer braincells. I recommend Miracle Pets.
