Guest Report post Posted May 3, 2002 I think this is one of the main things keeping him from getting over as a major heel. Could you imagine the heat he would have gotten tonight on Smackdown if he did his "WOULD YOU PLEASE SHUT THE HELL UP" line when the fans were chanting Hogan's name? Guest papacita Report post Posted May 3, 2002 Cuz just about every wrestler with a catchphrase starts to get face heat.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 3, 2002 Yea, sad but true, catchphrases = face. That's how it is, and probably how it will be for a while. Remember "What?!" Remember how the "heel" Austin was using that and getting more cheers, and where we are now because of it?
Guest Dr. Wrestlingphysics Report post Posted May 3, 2002 Remember when The Rock was a heel? He used to get so much face heat for his catchphrases that he often had to interrupt himself and say things to the crowd like "This ain't no singa-longa Rock!". When Austin was heel last year, he rarely used his established catchphrases ( Bottom line, Hell Yeah, etc) as he knew the crowd would pop for them, which he didn't want. Guest bcu1979 Report post Posted May 3, 2002 He still uses catchphrases. Heck, I think he used the phrase "larger than life living legend" about a half dozen times tonight. He just doesn't use any catchphrases that people might chant along with.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 3, 2002 I wouldn't really call "Larger than Life Living Legend" a catchphrase per se, but more of an arrogant heel self-title. Plus, even if it was a catchphrase, you're right, it's too long/awkward to chant along to.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted May 3, 2002 Catchphrases suck. They are so fucking horrible because everyone thinks they need one. If you have to go outof your way to say it instead of saying it naturally and having it catch on, it's going to sound like another asshole came up with a catchphrase to try to get over (Hardcore Holly I'm looking at you). Austin's catchphrases seem so good because they don't seem like he is going out of his way to say them.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 3, 2002 I think WWF just realized that Jericho is better when he's albe to adlib during a promo then when he's confined to certian catchphrases and things to say.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted May 3, 2002 Jericho's catchphrases sucked anyway, and were starting to get REALLY tired before he turned heel. I don't mind catchphrases—some of them are really good and the WWF needs to sell shirts—but the "SHUT THE HELL UP" and "NEVER EEEVER AGAYNE" weren't going to go in the Catchphrase Hall of Fame anytime soon. Yeah, Shut the Hell up always seemed like it was a little forced from Jericho. I dunno why, but I always got that impression. But that NEVER...EEEEEVER thing was great. I used to love it when he used to trick the fans into saying EEEEEEEVER and just come out with a plain over "ever". Jericho can be pretty damn funny when he wants to be. Guest razazteca Report post Posted May 3, 2002 The Ahalatola of Rock N Rolla and Raw is Jericho were popular.
Guest Report post Posted May 3, 2002 The Living Legend thing is actually being put to a lawsuit by Larry Zbysko, so you don't see Jericho say that anymore...
Guest Dangerous A Report post Posted May 4, 2002 A lot of folks here are dead on. Catchphrases= face heat. I remember seeing the HHH and Chyna tape "It's our time" and one of the things HHH said was when he turned heel, he had to get rid of all the catchphrases he used to do. Hell, even the whole "I am the Game, and I am that damn good" phrase is over and I think it's lame. And that's from someone who actually can stand the guy. Guest Redhawk Report post Posted May 4, 2002 The thing I didn't like about the "NEVER EEE-VER" catchphrase is that Jericho just couldn't seem to find the right way to use it. He'd say weird stuff that didn't make sense, like ... "I will give you a Y2J beatdown that you will never, eee-ver, forget, agayne." The problem with that is this: Forget again? So he's gonna give them a beatdown that they'll forget, but then after they remember it they won't forget it again?
