Guest converge241 Report post Posted May 2, 2002 For those who might not know what I mean... Things like "the austin mystery driver", "the higher power", "someone is joining/leaving the alliance", "the baby doll envelope", "the stalker", "either Lex or Tatanka are selling out", and "the Black Scorpion". Best Buildup (and worst payoff): The mystery driver/who hit Austin. When they brought out suspects week by week like Gunn, Michaels, et all? HHH denying it? all great stuff.. then Rikishi is revealed and that is recieved so bad they have to say HHH was behind it all along. Worst Buildup (and best payoff surprisingly): The stalker I was hesitant about putting this one as DDp kind of went off on a tangent in his l-o-n-g promo after unveiling but the surprise was great as was the basic premise of wanting to establish himself. I hated the videos that built it up for the most part.. I though it may have worked better if Taker had some buddies that were getting attacked in the locker rooms. Revealing the stalker as DDP was great---but the WWF blew it completely when they went from DP stalking Sara to "become famous" to him stalking her because he was "in love with her". Heck, most fans who know DDP know he's married to Kimberly. Why in the heck would he stalk friggin' Sara when he has friggin' Kimberly back home? That---and the angle after KOTR 2001 was stiupid. Guest Report post Posted May 2, 2002 The Higher Power definitely comes to mind. There were so many cool choices, but they went with the most basic & lame choice: (as usual) a McMahon. Kane was a pretty lame build-up/debut on both ends. It was almost like a Dungeon of Doom segment. *scary*

Guest converge241 Report post Posted May 2, 2002 I might have to say the Higher Power was a bit worse trust me, it was close. I think the kicker for the vote on the mystery driver was the fact that because he was out so long you had the opportunity for so much more whereas the higher power really was another ownership/leader kind of thing. Just a slight edge in more potential for me. I think those two will show up a lot. Id like to add Flairs mystery wrestler as bad buildup and bad delivery. Great some La Parka looking guy is jumping people. whopee. they could have at least got someone cool for a surprising payoff. Whatever happened to the mystery person who was jumping the nagnificant seven as revenge anyway?
Guest Haku Report post Posted May 2, 2002 I thought the Kane buildup was good.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted May 2, 2002 Unsolved Mystery: in WCW when DDP lost all of his money and became a street bum angle, a limo with a mysterious benefactor save his career. Was the benefactor ever revealed? just bad: Also in WCW when Sting got burned by Vampiro and was wearing a mask only to reveal the same face paint, after weeks of build up. Guest Report post Posted May 2, 2002 This isn't really a mystery angle, but since we're talkin about Build ups, Bret Hart's WcW Debut. So God aweful. Well, maybe it is a mystery how bad they used Bret.
Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted May 2, 2002 Worst buildup for me has got to be the nWo. Vince should have never said they was even going to show up, just had them come out and kick people's ass instead

Was the benefactor ever revealed? no! how could i forget this one.. it was supposed to be Bischoff i believe. Worst buildup for me has got to be the nWo. Vince should have never said they was even going to show up, just had them come out and kick people's ass instead this was just awful all around..on so many levels This isn't really a mystery angle, but since we're talkin about Build ups, Bret Hart's WcW Debut. So God aweful. Well, maybe it is a mystery how bad they used Bret boy, i had blocked this one out too...and why the hell did they keep turning him? does anybody remember Goldberg and Russo in the desert..such a bad swerve
Guest Report post Posted May 2, 2002 The stalker buildup was pretty dumb, but the night DDP came out to UT's music and rode the bike was cool. At least until he started talking. I still think it should've been Michaels coming back for revenge from RR '98, but oh

Guest Report post Posted May 2, 2002 How about Edge as Sable's mystery partner at SummerSlam 98. That went nowhere. And has anyone mentioned the briefcase at King of the Ring 99? The answers to these mysteries will die with Vince Russo and Vince McMahon.
Guest papacita Report post Posted May 2, 2002 I think they were implying that Bossman lowered the briefcase at KOTR. As for best build up...I really wasn't feeling the "Who ran over Stone Cold" build up in the first place, but the payoff pissed me off, cuz I wanted it to be Jericho or Michaels. Plus I think Austin shoulda been there when it was announced, cuz a surprise attack woulda been 10 times better than "I did it for you, Rock!" Best build up...wasn't really a mystery, but Angle/HHH. That was one of the few angles that I was able to get into that year, and they messed it up big time. I seriously thnk they shouldn't have carried it past SummerSlam. Another good one was the Taker/Kane build from the summer of 98. I liked that angle, and it was nice for them to bring those two together on the Raw before SummerSlam, but the title match with Austin sucked, and it also fucked up the Mankind/Kane Vs Outlaws match. Biggest mystery for me when it comes to that angle is how the hell they got Austin and Kane to come outta that casket.
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted May 3, 2002 I also think they were trying to say Boss Man was the one for raised to case at KOTR '99. Somehow he got on Vince's bad side, then after KOTR '99 he came out to his old music then hugged Vince & Shane and said he loved them.
Guest RetroRob215 Report post Posted May 3, 2002 It's not much of a mystery, but being a Goldust mark, I loved Goldust's initial return to fight Val Venis in 98/99. The lights go out while Terry and Val are making out, the goldust falls, Goldust says that he'll be back next week. And for weeks prior, Rhodes would walk around the arena with a "He's Coming Back" sign, everyone figured he meant Christ, since he had the religious gimmick then. Guest Report post Posted May 5, 2002 The hummer did have a payoff...Eric Bischoff. Yeah. It was revealed during the WCW 2000 New Blood/Millionaire's Club angle. Billy Kidman was in that fued with Hogan at the time, and Eric Bischoff was pretty much his manager going into the confrontation. Anyway, on Nitro I think, Hogan was sitting in his limo, when up comes the White Hummer which crashes into the limo, and out step Bischoff and Kidman. Anyway, on Nitro I think, Hogan was sitting in his limo, when up comes the White Hummer which crashes into the limo, and out step Bischoff and Kidman. That's pretty close, but what happened was that Hogan had been thrown into a dumpster and then Eric and Billy hit it numerous times. After they finished, Bitchoff gets out of the Hummer and says(or basically implied): "Guess you know who did it now, eh Hogan?"(I'm paraphrasing here). As far as disappointing angles, how about the New Blood/Millionaires Club bullshit? What's funny is that they tried to get the young guys over as faces in the beginning(I think), but the crowd totally turns on them and cheers the old guys. Who've thunk it, eh? Guest The Electrifyer Report post Posted May 5, 2002 Yeah, I remember that. I guess it didn't help that Biscoff and Russo aligned themselves with The New Blood to get them over. It totally backfired on them

DDP and poor Kanyon got put into a feud with Taker and Kane and got squashed. Their cage match at Summerslam was nothing more than a legalized assault on DDP and Kanyon and then DDP has to job to Sara. Fuck that. Worst payoff of all time, although the build-up wasn't bad. Just the moment of DDP unmasking. i even said in there about how it started to unravel right after. I didnt even want to think of end-results. Just the revelation of the surprise element.
