The ALCS: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

Recommended Posts

and the fact the majority of the baseball fans on TSM are Yankees fans

I don't know Hartfan, there are a lot of Yankee fans on the board, but I wouldn't say a majority. I've seen a lot of Sox fans (yourself, Max, Cartman), a handful of Mets fans (DerangedHermit, myself, etc) a handful of Phillies fans (Al, Spaceman Spiff, Pinjockey). I think it just seems the board is full of Yankee fans because they are the most vocal.

Oh, for the love of shit, something's wrong with Rivera's wife and someone almost took out Tom Gordon's eye.

Yankees: 'Personal issue' quiets clubhouse celebration

Sunday, October 10, 2004

BY DAN GRAZIANO

Star-Ledger Staff

MINNEAPOLIS -- They celebrated, as they always do when they win a postseason series. They poured champagne.

They also spoke with deep respect of their opponent, this time the vanquished Minnesota Twins, who gave them as tough as series as they'd expected. They talked of their impending rematch with the Boston Red Sox, against whom they'll begin the American League Championship Series on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

But the Yankees' mood in the clubhouse last night was subdued after their dramatic, 11-inning, 6-5 comeback victory that clinched the division series. Players huddled in corners, whispering to each other. Security guards abruptly booted the media from the clubhouse only 45 minutes after the end of the game.

General manager Brian Cashman said there was a problem of a personal nature with one of the team's players, but he declined to comment further.

Speculation was that the player involved was closer Mariano Rivera, whose wife, Clara, was crying in manager Joe Torre's office after the game, according to a person who was in the clubhouse. The person said Clara Rivera entered the clubhouse as soon as the game ended, and the mood in the room darkened almost right away.

She stayed in the office, where team officials, including Torre, Cashman and team physician Stuart Hershon met with her. About an hour after the game, she left the ballpark, escorted by team security guards. Rivera left more than a half-hour later, with teammates.

"It's a personal issue, and I'm not going to comment further," Cashman said.

Rick Cerrone, the team's media relations director, said the issue had nothing to do with the health of the player involved (no one, including Cerrone, identified the player as Rivera). Asked if it might affect the status of the player for the next round, Cerrone said, "I'd be guessing." Asked the same question, Cashman said, "We have until 10 a.m. Tuesday, and we haven't even discussed the roster."

Confusing though it was, the issue detracted from the usual post-clinching antics. Still, most of the players went about their interviews and other business as they dressed in their suits and headed for the plane that would take them back to New York.

When asked why he wasn't soaked with champagne, shortstop Derek Jeter said, "It's a long story."

And while Jeter avoided a bubbly bath, reliever Tom Gordon wasn't so fortunate. The abbreviated celebration nearly had a disastrous ending for the Yankees set-up man.

During the revelry, one of his teammates accidentally shot a cork directly into Gordon's left eye. Gordon, standing drenched in the far corner of the room, looked stunned as bullpen mate Felix Heredia tried to assess the damage.

"Are you okay? Are you okay?" Heredia asked, waving his hand in front of Gordon's face.

"I have to get this checked out," Gordon said.

He spent the next 15 minutes in the medical room, where team trainers tended to the injury. When Gordon emerged, the champagne had dried -- and the pitcher was furious.

"That thing got me right in the corner of my eye," Gordon said told The Star-Ledger. "I can't believe they did that."

When asked who fired the cork, Gordon replied, "I don't know. It hit me right in the face. It won't happen again, I can tell you that much. Next time, I'll have something over my eyes, I know that."

The previous night, several Red Sox players wore goggles during the celebration that followed their ALDS victory over the Anaheim Angels.

If the Rivera incident remains murky and the culprit in the Gordon cork mystery is unknown, this much is clear: The Yankees can not afford to lose either of their two bullpen stars for the championship series next week against the Red Sox.

Of course if those two were out for it and the Yankees lost... we would hear from AS and Co about how they didn't have Rivera and Gordon and watch the excuses fly.

Because, you know, Tanyon Sturtze as your top ranking bullpen guy is a way to win.

Well Rivera is one of, if not, the most important piece of the Yankees pitching puzzle. Its not an excuse, its the fucking facts.

He's not just the most important pitcher.

He's probably the most important guy on the team period.

Thats arguable in a sense that he needs a lead to start with. But he is definately important. Guys like Jeter and A-Rod are just as important as him, but still, he'd leave an irreplacable void on the roster.

I never thought I'd be the guy that was more worried with how something physically looks than it's practical use, but...damn, there has to be a better option.

If Tom Gordon can't pitch than there is a vlaid reason right there why it was smart. They looked stupid, but sometimes, safety comes before fashion.

He can pitch. No real damage was done.

Maybe sunglasses would work.

By the time one of them makes it to play St. Louis in the Series, they will have been drained emotionally and physically...just as the Yanks looked against Florida last season.

And we still should have won.

You lost to the better team, get over it.

Their pitching was better than the Yanks, but the Yanks had the better offense.

Florida won 4, the Yanks won 2. I'd say Florida was the better team.

The Yankees were also completely derailed by the worst pitcher in baseball and a surprise (or maybe not so surprise) back injury.

The Marlins were better that series. They weren't the better team.

Mariano will find a way to play.

I'm sure he will.

I'm getting this from a Panamanian Newspaper, so you might want to brush up on your high school Spanish.

Basically, his brother-in-law and his son were electrocuted while trying to cleana pool.

Talk all you want about Weaver. He didn't pitch every inning of the series.
