The Mets to Form Their Own Cable Network

"NEW YORK – The New York Mets Tuesday said it plans to start up a New York regional sports network with Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp. in 2006 that would have the television rights to the bulk of the baseball team's games.

 

 

The network would be jointly owned by the two New York area cable companies and Sterling Entertainment Enterprises LLC, a company formed by the owners of the Mets. The as-yet unnamed network would broadcast up to 125 Mets games a season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

 

The deal leaves out of the picture Cablevision Systems Corp whose MSG and Fox Sports New York channels have the Mets television rights through the 2005 season. Earlier this year, the Mets exercised a right to decline to extend their contract and paid Cablevision $54 million.

 

As part of Cablevision's contract, it had first-look rights at the venture, but it eventually declined to participate, a source told Reuters last week.

 

Time Warner Cable is owned by Time Warner Inc.

 

The new network would become the fourth regional sports network in the New York area, along with the Yes Entertainment Sports network, which is co-owned by the Mets crosstown rivals the New York Yankees, and MSG and Fox Sports."
