Guest KANE Report post Posted May 4, 2002 :: Sitting at the Bar :: Cover Band Man: Ok, so next we're going to play a song from Red Hot Chilli Peppers Us: YES! Cover Band Man: UNDER THE BRIDGE! Us: No! YOU COULDN'T HAVE PICKED A WEAKER SONG FROM THE CHILLI PEPPERS CATALOG! (after they butchered it) Cover Band Man: Ok, here's an original tune! Us: NOOOOOOOO! (end scene) after listening to a whole set of train, nickelback, and lit tunes, one has to wonder, why do coverbands revel in playing pussy mainstream alternative song after pussy mainstream alternative song, while once in a while adding their own inessential original songs in there? Are cover bands inherently evil?
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 4, 2002 Yes. I'd noticed the same thing, too. You can always tell a bad cover band when their range of influences doesn't go beyond things you could hear on Power 107 or whatever. Oh, and any band that plays "Creep." Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 4, 2002 What would you rather they play? They will mostly play well known songs unless they are a cover band of a certian band or are playing in front of a crowd that they know is into any kind of music regardless of it being popular. I mean why would they play songs that no one would know when they will usually play in front of people who want to hear songs they know.

Or at least do something interesting with the bad music. I just don't understand the point of a band playing straight-up covers of other peoples' songs
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 4, 2002 But honestly no one who's really into music is going to see a cover band in the first place. Well at least you wouldn't think they would. So since their average audience would mainly consist of people who like music but don't obsess over it(no offense meant kinetic) playing known songs is probably the best thing for them to do. I'm not saying cover bands are good...but still.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted May 4, 2002 ok, here in san antonio, there's a band called dragonfly who do strictly covers. now, the singer has some range. to go from a prince cover to rage to weezer impressed me. Then he decides to play violent femmes "blister in the sun" (which i hate by the way) and in the middle, during the whispering chorus, the motherfucker breaks out with the jeffersons theme song....and it was seamless. truly original. not all cover bands suck. Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted May 4, 2002 In my hometown, Seduced By Madness blends covers with original songs, and at one of their shows, they covered a Dave Matthews Band song, "Crash," and then covered Pantera's "Revolution Is My Name." Their original songs are killer, too. Most cover bands infinitely suck, unless they're of a certain (sub)genre and do covers of songs completely different than their (sub)genre. Guest muzanisa Report post Posted May 4, 2002 I was in a band in the mid-90's that did original songs and everywhere we played we were asked to Wonderwall. When the rest of the band decided to do covers to actually earn money I left. I've found that most venues like cover bands and most audiences like to hear something familiar; unless you're only playing venues that stage new bands. See that's what i was saying. Well Dave Matthews is bad enough in of himself. So i'd imagine that a Dave Matthews cover band would be even worse.
Guest KANE Report post Posted May 4, 2002 Yeah, but at that point, I'd rather hear the CDs of the songs played over the PA then some butchered cover.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted May 6, 2002 I can live with a cover band if they are people who dont have the capability to be a "real" band..time to write their own songs, tour excessively etc.. i think its cool if some people just want to play a gig to play.. what i dont like are bands who go on the national touring circuit being Alive! or Itchy Fish.. if youre already putting that much effort and making more mony..just shit or get off the pot and go at it on your own.
