Anya 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 I'm playing it now. It's ok, I guess. DOA1 is a nice bonus, but the game is unplayable now, like most other old 3D fighting games. The new version of DOA2 is like an expansion pak of DOA3. It even has the same menus. The backgrounds are amazing! Really cool designs and the best graphics in a fighting game. Too bad the gameplay is still just DOA. I'm already losing interest in this after like 30 minutes. DOA3 and 2 are too close. I can't believe the press hated on Tekken 4 for being too much like TTT(which is ridiculous) but are loving this game. Oh, and the CG movie for DOA2 is really impressive. At least graphically. I can't tell what's going on as far as story goes because the DOA plot is so confusing and poorly translated. It has to have the most incoherent story ever. It makes KOF's nonsense look like a work of art.
Jer 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Heh, I haven't bothered with it. I have friends to play in real life that are better than 99% of the people online, so I really don't care about X-Box Live support. Its only use to me would be to beat on GameFAQs scrubs that think they're the shit, heh. So to me, it's just a graphical upgrade on DOA2, which wasn't a good game, so this won't be a good game either. The press' obsession with online play is really funny to me. Take a blah fighter, give it online play, and it's awesome and innovative. But what can you expect, it's not like any of them actually understand any fighter well enough to know what changes from sequel to sequel. T4 overhauled the whole TTT engine (for better or worse), but if all you did in TTT was button mash and do ten strings, you won't notice. Button mashing and ten strings still "work" in T4, so it must be the same game, right? Still though, as ridiculous as it is, I hope Namco takes notice of what the press looks for. No reason for them not to add online play (as laggy as it might be), stupid one player modes, a training mode, character customization and all that other stuff the press drools over since they don't know enough to actually evaluate gameplay. Anya 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Yeah, I want Namco to go all out with T5's home version just so the press will like it. Better reviews will hopefully mean better sales, which makes for a better chance at T6. If it takes novelty modes to get T6 then I'm all for it. So far I don't think the press will like it. Even though most the reports from knowledgeable fans have been positive, except for people bitching about the damage. I am so hyped. Just a couple weeks..... Jer 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Yeah, I can't wait. We won't be getting a machine in town, probably, but I'm totally ready to drive to wherever one is. Everything they're doing with it just sounds great to me. I'm even excited about the card system. I'm glad they did a long beta test too, hopefully that means that the release version won't have as much bullshit as SC2 version A did. And compatability with PS2 controllers is like the best thing ever. No more suffering because drunken morons destroy controls when they lose, yay!!
Anya 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 The only thing I don't like about cards is the fact that you need one for each character you play. That just sucks! I play a bunch of characters, either seriously or just to mess around with. I want one single file to record ALL my wins/loses and time spent. It'd be really cool to see that after like 2 years of playing. I'm probably going to end up buying a card for Kazuya, Jin, Law, Marduk, Bryan & Paul...and that's just the default roster. Being able to bring your own PS2 stuff is the best new hardware related feature to be added in a fighting game since...um, I can't even remember. It's genius. Scroby 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 I saw it today when I came into work and it looked like a rental to me. But then again I'm not trying to buy any games until Halo 2 comes out because for some odd reason when I buy a game I don't care enough to try and beat it. I bought Men of Valor and only have played 3 levels of it, not sure why its a good game and all but yeah. Anyways back to DOA, to me it looked the same as the first one that came out for Xbox just with a few add features and more areas to fight in. Are they're any new fighters? Anya 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 No, there isn't anyone new, besides the final boss being different. The game is DOA1 and DOA2, so it's actually a downgrade in some ways compared to DOA3. They added hitomi from DOA3, but Brad and Christie are missing.
Jer 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Blah I didn't know it was one character per card. That's pretty weak, but definitely makes sense financially. I'll probably end up getting a card for Julia, Raven, some Mishima and maybe the random character, so that'd be $20 right there. Yikes. At least they'll make cool looking placeholders in the DDR quarter line. Did they say how far the release got pushed back, or are we just kind of waiting for machines to show up? I haven't found a date anywhere recently...
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 So far I don't think the press will like it. The press' obsession with online play is really funny to me. Take a blah fighter, give it online play, and it's awesome and innovative. Game Informer (the worst gaming magazine around today that I know of, except for possibly those gaming/"men's" magazines) gave MKD a 9.5. NINE-POINT-FIVE! They gave SVC Chaos 6.5. If they give DoAU any lower than an 8 I'll be shocked.
Jer 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Game Informer is the perfect example of how gameplay isn't even a factor in mainstream fighter reviews. One month after they gave MKD that insanely high review, there was a quote from them that people posted on SRK and GameFAQs that was something to the extent of "Capcom let Street Fighter die by never releasing new games and just releasing constant minor upgrades like SSF2T and SF3ts, while Midway turned MK into something fresh and different". Acting like SF3ts is some minor upgrade over SF2 pissed off all the hardcore people, but that's how mainstream people see it. They don't see gameplay changes, no matter how good or significant, unless there's some sort of total graphical overhaul. Which is why I agree with Anyanka that T5 could very well get bad reviews, since to the casual gamer it's not going to look different enough. SVC Chaos was horrible, heh, 6.5 is generous. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 "SVC Chaos was horrible, heh, 6.5 is generous." Since 6.5 means ABOVE AVERAGE (or *should*), yes, it is generous. Plus it means that I don't think there's anyway in hell that DoAU will score that "low." SvCC would have deserved a far, far worse score than 6.5 if it had been released 10 years ago with the gameplay as it is. BUT, Chaos has online play...so I guess no matter how gawdawful a fighter is released, if it has online play GI will give it a 6.5 or better. There's an inherent flaw when readers *think* that 6.5 is supposed to be a bad game, when in fact it *should* be a game that's above average, may have minor flaws, and simply doesn't deserve a really high score. GI gave Ratchet and Clank 3 a perfect 10. They *hype that* on the cover. While I believe it is a really good game (going by the quality of the last two titles), that "perfect 10" is virtually meaningless. It seems like an "average" game gets about a 7 in game magazines that use the 10-point scale. I think a lot of the blame lies in people likening games to grades in school, where 65% or less is an F (at least where I live, anyway). It completely throws the "bell curve" principle out of whack. Which is why I agree with Anyanka that T5 could very well get bad reviews, since to the casual gamer it's not going to look different enough. If it looks pretty and has online play, GI will probably give it at least a 9.0.
Anya 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 T5 has been delayed, but I don't think anyone knows just how much. I think everybody's expecting an early November release now.
