Nine more new superhero movies...

Recommended Posts

Guest RetroRob215

Stan Lee and Kevin Smith were interviewed by Zap2it.com, they announced that movies are being made for...

The Fantastic Four

The Hulk

Silver Surfer

Iron Machine

Submariner

Ghost Rider

Daredevil (Smith involved)

Black Cat (Smith involved)

Green Arrow (Smith involved)

Plus...

Spiderman 2 (Smith involved)

Spiderman 3

X-Men 2

If you ask me, that's just oversaturation.  I guess Stan Lee is trying to lose a lot of money.  For example, how many people are going to see an Iron Machine movie?

Yikes! I knew there were some new ones coming up, but not THAT many... it's the newest trend I guess.

Iron Machine is Iron Man sub-story, right? I think that'd be kinda cool, what I wanna know is how they're going to do Ghost Rider without making it look like total cheese.  I mean the guy's head is a flaming skull for goodness' sake!

I'd like to see a Ghost Rider movie...yes, it'd be hard to do, considering his head is a FLAMING SKULL...but it'd be sweet to watch.

The rest, aside from X-Men 2 and the Spider-Man sequels, I have no enthusiasm to see...

Why couldn't they just do a Punisher movie?  Very few FX would be needed, low budget, with some kick ass fight scenes and huge explosions.  I would pay good money for the Punisher because he is the most real of all the Marvel heros.  His family was killed by the mob and he wants revenge in the form of big guns and bombs.  Thats my kind of Super Hero.

But there already was a Punisher. It was the first comic book movie made if i'm not mistaken. Check it out, it's from the early to mid 90s, and it stars Dolph Lundgren (Ivan Drago, Rocky IV) as the Punisher.

Well by being made i'm sure they mean that are in production and not that they are being "made" as we speak. So i don't expect half of those listed at least to be made.

Well with the success Xmen and Spiderman has had studio will be willing to spend the money on making good comic book adaptions. So i say they need to strike now while the money is there and make all the comic book adaptions that's been sitting around waiting. However i think they need to focus and do certian ones and not just take a random comic.

Fantastic Four, Hulk, Ghost Rider and Daredevil should be made. But the rest of that list probably shouldn't be made as it would crowd the trend with comics that didn't need to be made into a movie. Besides there are other better comics that deserves to get movies over a something like a Submariner movie.

But really i don't mind this being the new trend. I don't read comics but for some reason i like "superhero" movies.

Yeah Punisher is like a real person so why bother with giving him another movie? It would be no different then any other action movie that is about revenge.

Like you said Punisher wouldn't call for alot of expensive fx so why do another one now? I'd rather they do the comics that need big money to make into a movie now that Studios will be eager to dump money into superhero movies.

I wasn't talking as a movie goer, although I would watch it because I'm a Punisher mark, I was talking as Stan Lee, or which ever idiot decided to make all these movies.

From a production point of view, it would be easier to make a Punisher movie than a Ghost Rider or Silver Surfer movie.  In the end, the Punisher is more popular than the Silver Surfer, so he would probably draw more revenue, plus it would cost less to make the Punisher movie, so PROFIT WOULD BE UP.  Whereas the Silver Surfer may have special powers, but it would cost more to produce his movie and it would probably generate less than a Punisher movie.

In the end, I think the Punisher would end up with more of a profit than most of the movies listed above.

That's exactly my point. Now that he has the studio's willing to give his movies the money they need he will want to make the movies that would be expensive to make.

Since a Punisher type movie would cost alot less he could get it made even when studios aren't throwing money at him.

Put yourself in his shoes. You have two movies you're working on. One's a basic movie that doesn't call for many fx besides explosion and would be cheaper to make which could be made easily at any time. The other movie is a big budget movie that will contain alot of expensive fx work and even though you totally love the movie and would love to get the money that it would take to make it. Now say movies in the genre of both your movies explode and are making a shit load of money. Now since the studios have seen the success of those movies all of a sudden your scripts are in much higher demand with studios throwing money at you.

So which movie would you want to make? The cheaper one that you know could easily be made at anytime. Or the much more expensive one that you'd love to make and this could be your only chance to get a big enough budget?

Well In Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Brodie was right about all the movie companies getting any comic property they can.

First off, I'd just like to say that, if it's a comic-book movie, that doesn't mean that Kevin Smith will be (or for that matter, SHOULD BE) involved with it.  I like the guy, but I'd rather NOT have him involved in that many comic properties.

The reason for all of these movies is obvious - money.  If you read the comic book folder, you'll see a thread talking about a recent interview with Marvel EIC Joe Quesada.  In that interview, he admitts that only last year has Marvel actually begun to turn a profit with its comics.  Hell, it's been said for years that the only reason Time Warner keeps DC comics around is to develop properties for films.  The real money is in the movies, and the various licensing deals that can be made from it.

This list isn't so new.  The following films:

The Fantastic Four

The Hulk

Silver Surfer

Iron Machine

Submariner

Ghost Rider

Daredevil

Were all reported to be in development for some time now (I'm assuming they mean Iron MAN, unless they want to get silly on us and change the name).  Hulk and Daredevil will probably come out next year.  Ghost Rider probably in 2003, they're finalizing the pre-production (rumor has it that Nic Cage will get the gig).  There's supposed to be an Iron Fist movie being made as well, starring Ray Park (aka Darth Maul) as the title character, but I'm not sure if the production has started and even if it does get made it may wind up going straight to video.

Also,

Spiderman 2 & 3

X-Men 2 & 3

No surprise, since I think the deals made for the properties promised at least 3 movies for each of these franchises.

However, these are new:

Black Cat

Green Arrow

These are the only two that I can really see Smith getting involved with, since he'll be writing both properties (in comic form).  If he does get involved in making movies for either property, I hope he doesn't direct either film.

Please don't read this post. There are some fine posts by good people above and (probably) below this post, it would make me very happy to just pass this by.

I looked three times and not once did I see Sandman on that list. I would pay good (not good money, but I'm not saying I'd only go if it were free) money to see Sandman. But they'd probably ruin it anyways by hiring actors that are either untalented, are completely wrong for the movie, or both, and giving it to crappy writers and directors and make it a Gramercy Picture and sell T-Shirts everywhere T-Shirts or Comic Books are sold.

I thought the Iron Fist movie was going to star Jet Li and have Michael Duncan Clark as Power Man?

Ghost Rider was one of my favorite characters, anybody know who the director or producers are?

I'm excited about The Hulk movie, since Ang Lee is the director.

As for the Fantastic Four movie, I hope that Dr Doom is the villian

Don't forget, Rob Liefeld's "Doom's IV" project was optioned by Tom Cruise 10 years ago...

>The Fantastic Four

I still can't bring myself to watch my copy of Roger Corman's FF.  Maybe tonight, since the Leafs aren't playing...

>The Hulk

Since Ang Lee's involved, it'll be done, but damned if I know if it's gonna be good.

>Silver Surfer

Destined for development hell and/or a bad movie.  They struck gold with Blade, but I can't see them managing to do it again with another 2nd or 3rd tier hero.

>Iron Machine

First I've heard of this, unless you mean Iron Man

>Submariner

See Silver Surfer

>Ghost Rider

See Silver Surfer.  Nicholas Cage + superhero movies = not gonna get done.

>Daredevil (Smith involved)

That's probably just because Affleck's in the movie that the "Smith involved" thing comes into play.

>Black Cat (Smith involved)

She'll turn up in Spider-Man instead.

>Green Arrow (Smith involved)

See Silver Surfer

There's also a Batman: Year One in development, and hopefully that'll get done.  I'm not holding my breath though...

Anyone know where I can get a copy of Corman's Fantastic Four?

I'd actually love to see a Silver Surfer movie, just as I'd love to see a Ghost Rider movie, but as I mentioned earlier, I don't think there's any way it could come off seriously.

Here's an idea though, instead of a live action comic book hero movie, why not an animated feature a la Batman Beyond? That way, the elements that work best as inked art can remain as such.

I got mine at the Motor City Comicon last year.

It seems that the market for that nowadays is in Direct-To-Video.  The Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker Uncut OAV is supposed to be quite good...

From what I read a while ago, they said they wanted the Fantastic Four to be a comedy movie. I would rather not see them do that because it will go over poorly. I don't knwo about all of these movies. I think Blade worked because it was a vampire movie. Hulk should work because of the nature of his character, not to mention the fact that he's an iconic character. When the trailer came on and said that it wouldn't come out until next summer, the people in the theater weren't pleased. That could be a good thing. I don't want to see Nicholas Cage in any superhero movie. That's all there is to it. I'm not sure if anyone else feels this way, but I thik the movie would be better off without him and could be a success without him. It could be a success either way, but I think it would be better off witout him. The Dare Devil movie might be cool, but I don't know if people will take to it like they did the Spider-Man movie. I want to see it, but not as badly as I wanted to see Spider-Man. I can't see any of the other movies doing big numbers or being really good either (especially Silver Surfer).

Well, there was a teaser for "Hulk" before Spider-Man, and Ben Afleck was signed to do Daredevil, so those are definates. Besideds those, Spider-Man and X-Men sequels, and The Fantastic Four and Iron Man, I have no intrest in the rest of them.

Dude Marvel's going to MAKE money. I don't get how you think this will be bad for them. What the fuck is the Iron Machine anyway? I hope its not some lame combo movie with War Machine and Iron Man. Only if it is the WM in the MArvel Max line that ruled ass.

Ghost Rider was one of my favorite characters, anybody know who the director or producers are?
He is still around you know. He had a new mini series that sucked ass but he is supposed to get a regular series soon.

Why is Stan an idiot? The movies are maknig money so why not?

What is a Gramecy picture?

I think they are writing the script. It is a def. to get made.

Daredevil and The Hulk already have cast and directors do they will be made, no doubt. I would like to see Ghost Rider but not if Nick Cage is involved, I would rather see Johnny Depp in it. Cage is already involved in Constantine, based on the Vertigo character.

Ray Park is cast as Iron Fist but I haven't heard anything else from that camp.

And I'm not sure about that "Iron Machine" thing. It must be Iron Man (Tom Cruise showed interest about a year ago). I don't think they would make War Machine before Iron Man.

And Spielberg optioned Doom's IV, not Cruise.

Jennifer Garner from Alias is going to be in DareDevil. At least that what I read in Maxim.

I'd like to see a Ghost Rider movie, and I can even see Nicholas Cage playing Johnny Blaze.  This presumes they're using the old-school GR, but his was the more compelling series to begin with.

I'm not looking forward to Affleck as Daredevil.

Iron Man (I don't know what Iron Machine is; I haven't really followed comics since ~1994) would be good, basically because Tony Stark is a good and interesting character.

That's the thing: these movies need to be character-driven.  I can see the Fantastic Four movie falling into the X-Men trap: no character development because it focuses on multiple protagonists, and the result is a decent action movie, but nothing that's true to the lineage in any way.

That's what I was sayng in the sequels/villains thread. I think the next X-Men movie needs to stay away from a Hellfire club story because another group means more characters to leave undeveloped. None of the characters were adequately developed or explained. The only ones with some kind of explanation or development were Wolverine, Magneto and Rogue. I was able to enjoy the movie because I knew the characters going before I saw the movie.
