Slayer 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2004 Better yet, download the original Savatage tune Savatage is one of those metal bands that's always existed right on the cusp of metal stardom (though Criss Oliva's death was devastating) and I think metalheads should check them out In the last couple years I've noticed that they've gained a lot of mainstream publicity, albeit as Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Nevermortal 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2004 One song to download above all others: "Unas, Slayer of the Gods". This song's dick has been sucked on here for the past 2 years, and it's deserving of every textual blowjob it has gotten. "Unas feedeth on their entrails." Guest Fire and Knives Report post Posted November 17, 2004 I'm listening to the whole album right now. It's fucking gorgeous. I've found that I prefer the Patton EP to Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine. This saddens me, because the goddamn Patton EP is like eighteen minutes long. I demand that whatever band Patton is busy with at the moment be killed and Patton be forced to write shit like "Pig Latin" for the rest of his career. K. Guest Fire and Knives Report post Posted November 17, 2004 Nah, it kept freezing at the same place for me. I found some shit on Soulseek, though. Immortal, Emperor, Darkthrone, etc. Some of it is interesting, but the vocals are just crucifying it for me. It's just coming across as too over the top so far. I haven't really sat with an album or two yet, though, so that may change, but I suspect I dig the nihilism much more than the actual music. K.

See, that's what I thought at first, until I gave Miss Machine a few more spins and compared the two. The EP really is TOTALLY overshadowed by Patton. The new one showcases the entire band better, I think.

I love that song. I think I might have a similar taste to K here, except that I'm much more into thrashy metal. I agree that it's difficult for me to get into some death and black because of the over-the-top nature of some of them, until you really begin to understand the subtleties behind them, and you appreciate the vocals not as verbalizing the lyrics but as another instrument that conveys the meaning of a song. That is one thing that seperates death/black from other genres of music, although I still like some recognizance in my vocals (Which is why I like Slayer, M.A., and bands like Arch Enemy a lot). Guest Fire and Knives Report post Posted November 24, 2004 I'm finding my taste in metal to be falling in line with Agent's. He should recommend me that brutal death he mentioned on the first page. I still think Irony is better than Miss Machine, though. I think. K.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 24, 2004 What other Patton have you heard, though? I think Bungle's California is better by his standards. Be sure to see them live, too. Fantastic experience. To name drop death bands I think are good..Nile, Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus, Cephalic Carnage (they're more grindy though), Suffocation, early Morbid Angel.. The bad ones are more like..Six Feet Under, Lividity- even though I like them, Napalm Death.. Ok ranges around Morbid Angel's stuff with Steve Tucker outside of half of Gateways to Annihilation, and a lot of Hate Eternal. Early Nile. For brutal death "starter" albums, I'd get In Their Darkened Shrines by Nile (because it's totally overwhelming), and Dying Fetus-Destroy The Opposition. The latter is more of an angry politico-religious metal fuming session lyrically, with incredibly tricked out guitar, a good range of growling, and crazy technicality from all that just sounds mean. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 24, 2004 See Dying Fetus live, too. It's the most violent crowd you'll ever witness, in terms of each person in the pit being a complete psychotic moreso than a lot of people pushing and shoving.
