The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2004 If you ditched the scores to the different categories at the end, then yeah, something like that is in the area that I'm talking about. Of course, my personal bias says that everybody should follow how I wrote video game reviews when I wrote for 411.
Guest CronoT Report post Posted November 18, 2004 If you ditched the scores to the different categories at the end, then yeah, something like that is in the area that I'm talking about. Of course, my personal bias says that everybody should follow how I wrote video game reviews when I wrote for 411. Well, the reason I use the scores, is because some people will pan straight down to the numerical eval. of the game, and skip the written part. I've seen reviews that were less than 200 words that were given "Very Helpful" reviews. I guess it's all in who you know.
chaosrage 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2004 I'm still pissed off that the gaming community got me to buy "Viewtiful Joe" when it was a mediocre rental, at best. That was one of those instances where I looked to the community and said "what is WRONG with you people?" Although I see it's more of the same with VJ2, I'm not getting burned this time. I took one look at the Viewtiful Joe commercials, and looked at the company that made it. Capcom absolutely hated Nintendo for a long time, so I take it as no surprise that they would make a second-rate for them. I knew it was going to blow just by watching the commercials. In all seriousness, Viewtiful Joe is just a modern up-to-date rehashing of the Ghosts and Goblins franchise. Nothing more, nothing less. I wish it was like Ghosts N Goblins. If I had to pick one game to compare VJ to, it would be TMNT: Turtles in Time. How repetitive it is fighting the same enemies over and over and taking forever to do it. I thought it was a pretty good game besides that, but I wouldn't buy it. There's too many better games out there to get. And Next Gen was the last mag worth paying money for. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Its no coincidence that Viewtiful Joe sold horribly on the PS2. VJ is easily one of the best games on the Gamecube and I can't wait for VJ2. As far as the whole Paper Mario thing goes, I just rented it and played it for almost 6 hours straight. Awesome game.
Guest combat_rock Report post Posted November 24, 2004 I think that there is some merit to rating individual aspects of games, because for some gamers graphics are more important than gameplay, some think storylines are more important than multiplayer, etc. However, I think that rather than doing that, reviewers should take the time to point out who would enjoy the game. For example, if Ebert and Roeper give a good review to a fairly mindless (yet well made and exciting) action movie, they'll often still go out of their way to tell you to avoid it if you're looking for something more cerebral. Anyway, I've always found EGM to be fair with their reviews, and often times you'll see a game be heavily advertised in the same issuse it's panned, so that's a good sign. Plus I ussually agree with them in general. However, their overall content has been gradually declining. On the other hand, Play has great content, but like someone already mentioned, they give everything a good review it seems.
