Favourite Directors

Is there any particular director whose films you would go out of your way to see? What makes them stand out for you?

Directors i especially like....

Martin Scorcese: Made some enduring classics over a long career,an institution in American cinema.

Robert Altman: From M'A'S'H to Gosford Park, the man has proved his talent over and over again.'Nashville' was an influential film and after experiencing a rut he came back stronger than ever in the 90's with 'Short Cuts' & 'The Player'.

John Carpenter: He should have called it a day by now but he made some distinctive films in his time with 'The Thing' & 'Halloween'.(Also Roddy Piper in 'They Live'!!)

Ridley Scott: 'Alien'/'Bladerunner'/'Gladiator'.He has certainly made some commercially and critically acclaimed films.

Jim Jarmusch: Not everyones cup of tea really but i always find his films interesting and entertaining in an offbeat way.

Wes Anderson: 'The Royal Tenenbaums' has not been released in England yet but 'Bottle Rocket' & 'Rushmore' were two very good films which had a lot going for them in many ways i thought.

Shane Meadows: Young British director who has made just two films,'Twenty-Four-Seven' & 'A Room for Romeo Brass'.He fits into the British tradition of 'social realism'/'kitchen sink styles of filmmaking and is from the same area of the country as myself so i can relate to it to an extent. There is always a lot of humour in his films so they are never too depressing.

David Lynch: You either love him or hate him i suppose(or are completely indifferent of course).I like almost everything he has done.I loved 'The Straight Story' especially as it was a change of pace for him.

Any thoughts? I apologise if this topic has been done before but feel free to at least say what you think about these particualr directors.

What do you guys think makes a good director? I've never really been able to articulate what exactly it is I like about certain directors. Your thoughts?

The following directors are, in my opinion, so good that I've never seen a bad movie from them:

Akira Kurosawa, Sam Raimi, James Cameron, Takeshi Kitano, Buster Keaton, Ingmar Bergman, Wolfgang Peterson, Quentin Tarantino, Woody Allen, Peter Jackson, and Alfred Hitchcock.

Some directors might've made better movies than the above (Francis Ford Coppola comes to mind), but the ones I've listed always consistently entertain and/or inspire me, without ever having made a move that I didn't like.

Also, Edward D. Wood Jr. is a favorite director of mine, even though I couldn't call him "best" in good conscience.
