No matter how hard I try, I can't get into Burial's "Untrue.

The new Wu-Tang Clan album is just ok.

The Stomp and Stammer dig at Randy Newman that I referenced in another thread is from an article entitled "The 93 Dumbest Songs of All-Time." Newman's song "Louisiana 1927" comes in at 54, with the following endorsement:

"Randy Newman is incapable of producing anything but maudlin crap, exemplified by this excursion in sonic dreck that was everywhere during and after the Hurricane Katrina debacle. One couldn't flip on radio or tube without enduring the nasally-sentimental "Loo-wee-ziana" chorus. Go on and wash it away, and take the Great American Windbag and his piano with it."

It gets more conspicuously conservative in other spots. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is at #91, with the caption "And obviously that'd be a way to stick the US taxpayer with African debt." That has everything to do with Bono and nothing to do with the song.

#30. "Hello, I Love You." "Stampeded into contact with multiplying STDs, the empty moral expectations of 'free love' are as stupid as it gets." "I Want Your Sex" gets similar treatment: "If ever a song could be held accountable for spreading disease, it would be this bathhouse favorite."

My personal favorite is #50, Tracy Champman's "Fast Car": "'Po' people gon' rise up'? Not if they keep voting like sheep for Democrats whose handout policies only serve to keep them that way."

I don't begrudge these guys their politics, but they come off like Bill O'Reilly throughout the article. There's a charming review of "No Country For Old Men" in there, too. Says it's "no movie for smart people."

Psh. Like it's his fault that "they're trying to wash us away" was just as applicable 78 years later. And sonic dreck? I think it's wonderfully arranged, though schmaltzy, but that was intended. Randy's no dummy.

Randy Newman is incapable of producing anything but maudlin crap

Rednecks

Short People

Little Criminals

Political Science

Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear

Burn On (you have to get the joke or I guess it does seem maudlin)

Sail Away (vice versa)

You Can Leave Your Hat On

"Baltimore" is maudlin, but it's also his best-sounding song, though not the best written nor cleverest by a long shot.

I want to pick up Nilsson Sings Newman soon.

Stomp and Stammer

After reading this I decided to look through their website, where I stumbled across this gem:

The Kingdom [R]: Narrowing their criticisms to exclude Democrats while focused on troop withdrawal, the Left allows true failures of the Bush administration (excessive spending, border security) to go unaddressed. With a rash of anti-Iraq war films set for release, naturally the one “kill ‘em all” blast against Islamic bloodlust brings harsher treatment from leftist film critics. The LA Weekly denounced it as “suicide bomber porn”! When a bomb explodes killing Americans, civilian engineers and oil workers in Saudi Arabia, the FBI sends in agents to coordinate with reluctant Saudi cops investigating the crime scene. The one single, solitary Hollywood movie that pulls no punches in portraying Arabs as willing to maim their own kids is dubbed a mindless action movie?! But it has the rigorous balls to emphatically state what the Bush administration won’t consider: it’s time to forget this idyllic dream of bringing Jeffersonian democracy to murderers and just kill every last one!

It's good. Before it gave out on him for good, Nilsson had a terrific voice and was probably a better interpreter of songs than he was a songwriter.

Wha? Surely these are the words of a man who is only familiar with Newman's Disney soundtrack work. Get 12 Songs and Sail Away and familiarize yourself.

Get Good Old Boys, too. That one is my favorite.

Coincidentally, yesterday, I was thinking about getting into Randy Newman after listening to a few songs on Seeqpod and I was going to ask here what to get. I'm surprised I haven't tried to get into him earlier given my love of Ben Folds.

I don't know if I've ever heard an album with a bigger drop-off in quality between the first and second halves than the new Wu-Tang Clan. The first 7-8 tracks are brilliant and probably about as close as we're ever going to come to hearing 36 Chambers-level shit again. Then all of a sudden there's this totally embarassing RZA solo cut and the whole thing just completely falls apart.

I take back what I said here. After a few more listens the second half has revealed itself to be just about on par with the first. Even the RZA song isn't the total embarrassment I first thought it was.

Don't talk shit about Lee Greenwood.

Now that I have that out of my system. I know progressive metal is kind of hit or miss amongst the posters around here, but has anyone listened to the album from Dark Moor titled "Beyond the Sea"? I picked it up on a whim mainly due to the album cover, and it's pretty damn good. Track 10, "Alea Jacta" is one of the better tracks.

I'm confused. I just downloaded Mastodon's Blood Mountain, and it features a 5:02 version of "Pendelous Skin", whereas every website I can find states that the song is 22:15 long. Confirm/deny?

New Order's Technique is their best album, and deserves more love.

Agreed. There's not one bad song on there and their albums usually have some filler. Thanks for reminding me to download this because I lost my cd last year.

But seriously, this is just comical. I wonder how this Ira Schwartz guy can live with the ridiculous crap he's saying here. "Very comfortably," yeah, I know, but still.

The big New Years Eve show tonight here in beautiful Portland, Maine? Days Of The New. I didn't even know those guys were still together. They must have just reunited.

Wait- the show got cancelled. The twelve people who bought tickets must be so disappointed. They're not going to ring in the new year by listening to them play whatever their hit was. Sad. Just sad.

In the late 70s/early 80s when they were popular, The J. Geils Band played here every New Years Eve! So the residents of the Forest City will always have that. *sigh*
