Stuck In Seattle

Recommended Posts

Guest Matt

Im only 16 years old and am probably one of the biggest Grunge fans still to admit it. I stumbled upon "Vs" by Pearl Jam by accident and was sincere in thinking that it was the best album I have ever heard.

Since then I have amassed everything I can from PJ, AIC, Soundgarden, and Nirvana (who I enjoy immensely but seemed less than the prior three) I have gotten into Meat Puppets, Mudhoney, Green River, Mad Season, The Pixies, Motherlove Bone respectively as with other bands but Im not going to even attempt at listing them here.

I came to this from a Metal underground (Children of Bodom, In Flames, Opeth, Dream Theater, Iced Earth, Motorhead, Metallica) and while Metallca remains my favorite band *don't bitch about the selling out only to try to sell slipknot fandom or any other death metal crap.

Truth is, metal was just a phase growing up that I went through to be "cool." Grunge era music seems a lot more real to me. I think Eddie Vedder is THE most sincere musician on the face of this planet, besides maybe Neil Young.

There was and still is a message in the music that I'm glad I picked up on after the popularized flannel and torn jeans phase in the early90's.

So anyway, any other grunge fans here on the board. Specifically Pearl Jam. Just curious to see if I'm the only one who isn't letting go.

Not really a fan of "Grunge", but I think the bands were great, from what I've heard. I liked the concept of bands who were influenced by punk, classic rock and metal, as it's something that I've tried to incorporate in my music. To me, it just sounded like Rock and Roll, at least compared to mainstream rock nowadays. And I like that...straight hard rock and roll.

I didn't come across the "Grunge" bands until around 1997 so there wasn't a chance of me jumping on any bandwagons, though I probably would have in 92.

I still love the music.

Hey Matt...just glad to know that there is another Pearl Jam fan on the board. They are unequivocably my fav band, no question.  Kinda surprise that you would rate Nirvana below AIC and Soundgarden, but I like 'em all, so no need to quibble.

Have you checked out Eddie's track on the I Am Sam soundtrack.  Pretty dope if you ask me.

I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan, as well.  All told, I'm estimating I have at least 30+ CD's of theirs, counting studio albums, bootlegs, "official bootlegs", and singles.

Spaceman Spiff nice Pearl Jam collection you got goin a little small compared to mine. I got around 60 Pearl Jam cds around 50 of them are bootlegs both official and unofficial. Im sorta on a quest to collect all the official ones. If you trade at all and have a burner email me. Maybe we can work something out

Personally, I was a pretty big fan of Nirvana when I was younger, but lately I've been listening to more Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

So, we have a Spaceman Spiff and a Stupendous Man.  Will anyone register "Tracer Bullet"?

Ive been a on and off Pearl Jam fan for the last 3 years.  I am a pretty big fan of the whole grunge deal... mostly the mainstream stuff though.  I have became a HUUUUGGGGGEEEEE Alice in Chains fan since the start of this school year.  And I'm pretty into Screaming Tree's (they were seattle grunge, right?)  Ive heard a lot of good about Mudhoney, but the only time Ive heard them was on Black Sheep.   But yeah, the Seattle era has influenced my taste in music immensely.

Actually some of Pearl Jam's best mucis was just released recently. YIELD is their best album far and away, VS. is second. Good to see so many people can still appreciate good, real music!

No Code gets a lot of bashing, as well, but there are some pretty good songs on there, too.  "In My Tree" and "Sometimes" are 2 of my favorite PJ songs.

No Code is one of the most brilliant pieces of music released in the past 10 years, IMO.

'Mankind' and 'Hail Hail' are two of my favorite Pearl Jam songs but the album as a colective whole is kind of weak.

I was about 10-12 when the whole grunge wave happened, so I didn't really get into it then. After that, I've grown to appreciate it more and more, though I never actually get around to picking up any albums, apart from "Ten" by Pearl Jam, which I bought when I actually found it on vinyl rather cheaply in one of my favorite stores :).

Yeah, I was twelve or so when the initial wave happened.  It seems so vital and exciting, compared to everything that's happened in mainstream rock since.  And yet the only albums from that era that still appeal to me are Nirvana albums.  There's an absolute TON of great music to come out of the Pacific Northwest in the 90s but most of the "grunge" stuff was decidedly underwhelming.

The Grunge Era with all its bands in the early 90's, but thing is about grunge it had no staying power.  Most of the bands have fallen by the wayside, because lead singers have killed themselves, by suicide or drugs or bands have broken up.  The only two of the oringal grunge bands that had any staying power is Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, which are still 2 of my favorite bands.

Grunge came and went.  It was like more of a fashion thing with flannel and torn jeans, it really wasn't an earth shattering movement.

That's an arguable point.  It's really the only line of musical demarcation to come about in the 90s.  Popular rock music in the 1990s, as far as I'm concerned, can be divided into two categories: pre-Nirvana and post-Nirvana.  Because everything changed at that point.  And that allowed a lot of bands that would have otherwise been ignored to be signed to major labels, have hit singles, etc.  Case in point: The Breeders "Last Splash" sold more than the entire Pixies catalog combined.  That doesn't happen without Nirvana becoming such a huge mainstream phenomenon.  Sure...the mainstream hierarchy is back in place now, but for a few years things were different.

Glad to see the presence of Pearl Jam fans here. I have around 45 shows, some official, some not. I would rate the albums like this:

1. Vs. (classic, more angry than Ten)

2. Binuaral (excellent, aside from Soon Forget)

3. Yield

4. Ten (doesn't really sound like the Pearl Jam I know)

5. No Code (undereated, but not as good as others)

6. Vitalogy (good singles, but lots of filler crap)

I heard new songs from last week's Eddie performance, but I'm not sure about them yet.

nirvana is my favorite band, and i agree that the grunge era seemed drastically more 'real' then a lot of the stuff you heard before and after. not a huge pearl jam fan, but i have 'yield', and it's pretty good.

I personally feel something similar to grunge (which mixed parts of classic rock with 80's college rock) will come around again soon. people will rebel against the flash of the current tired rock acts and pop acts and a new band will come in with more of a grass roots rock feel. I personally can't wait because music lately has just sucked!

The grunge movement produced a lot of great music. The original bands who came out of the scene made some classic albums. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam & Screaming Trees were all great bands. 'Dust' by Screaming Trees is an album worth checking out if you never discovered them. Their lead singer Mark Lanegan is currently one of the best solo artists around and has several albums out, he always had the best voice in the grunge scene.
