Guest converge241 Report post Posted May 7, 2002 Allow me to explain... a friend of mine came up with this idea of certain songs that start to get played around this time and you like it a little (its catchy and all) and then radio kills it with constant play (usually coming from driving cars windows) as they are deemed "summer anthems".. examples: 1992 - Life is a Highway Ton Cohcrane 1993 - What's Up 4 Non Blondes 1994 - Shine Collective Soul 1995 - Runaround Blue Traveler 1996 - Counting Blue Cars Dishwalla 1997 - The Way Fastball 1999 - Livin La Vida Loca Ricky Martin 2001 - It's Been Awhile - Staind its not a science so there are no major guidelines except: You have to like it a little.. and you have to think that already it is getting played a little too much... here goes: so far "friends and family" - trik turner "party hard" - andrew WK
Guest swan Report post Posted May 7, 2002 "party hard" - andrew WK I have yet to hear that song on my local radio station. Did you see he already sold the song out to I think a Coors commercial?
Guest converge241 Report post Posted May 7, 2002 Did you see he already sold the song out to I think a Coors commercial? uh-oh.. i think i might already decalre that the winner!! your local will probably catch on just in time for 4th of july weekend
Guest mw679 Report post Posted May 7, 2002 I believe this was 1996: Nas- If I ruled the world...I liked it when it first came out, but then it seemed that every car that drove by had this frigging song playing. Not to mention the radio played it seemingly on a loop. I never liked this song, but The Macarana was played out for a whole summer as well, then just kinda faded away(Thank God...) Guest razazteca Report post Posted May 7, 2002 "What is Love" Fat Joe & Ashati "One Mic" Nas any song by JaRule he is everywhere or Nickleback Puddle of Mud Spiderman OST "Hero"
Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted May 7, 2002 "Summertime" by Fresh Prince Only thing I hate more than that song is Will Smith himself.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted May 8, 2002 The remix of My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style by Dream Warriors, which I believe is on the Goldmember soundtrack. Somehow, they managed to fuck up a good song. Yet, I know it'll get some airplay - at least in Canada anyways.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted May 8, 2002 the new one by Box Car Racer...it's already being pimped on MTV2 and my local rock station - they practically sound like Blink 182 (much like Hoobastank sounds like Incubus) so I can see that song getting a lot of air time this summer. Actually, Box Car Racer was formed by two of the Blink guys.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted May 8, 2002 "What is Love" Fat Joe & Ashati any song by JaRule he is everywhere I agree on those. For this summer, the radio will KILL Eminem's new single. They always do... "My Name Is", "The Real Slim Shady" anyone? "Without Me" will fall victim, too.
Guest Vyce Report post Posted May 8, 2002 As far as I'm concerned, Boxcar Racer IS Blink 182. My vote is for the latest Korn song. Simply because I HATE Korn, therefore even one play on the radio of their new single is one play too many in my eyes.
Guest Report post Posted May 8, 2002 I nominate Andrew W.K.'s 'Party Hard'. While scrolling through stations a few times, I've come across the song more than I care to remember. It's still being pimped hard by MTV as well, which gets into the mind of everyone NOT listening to the radio. I'm calling it now, 'Party Hard' will be the summer song of shit. Close runners-up...'The Middle' by Jimmy Eat World or 'that song by Hoobastank which I can't remember the name of'. I wouldn't be surprised if either one of these two become the big song. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 8, 2002 I'm going with the new Pink song...I am sooo tired of her and her subpar singing. And how could you rip on Jimmy Eat World...that was the best cd put out in 2001
Guest Report post Posted May 8, 2002 And how could you rip on Jimmy Eat World...that was the best cd put out in 2001 I just said that they'll have a big song....I never ripped into 'em at all or entered any snide comments, aside from them being guilty by association with my Andrew W.K. words (who is basically the biggest piece of crap artist I've ever seen). I happen to like Jimmy Eat World a lot and plan on getting their cd, but it goes without saying that they're pickng up airplay and before you know it, everyone will at least have heard of 'The Middle'. Meaning, it'll soon be referred to as the summer 2002 song, which is usually translated into being terrible....although I don't feel this way at all about them. Believe me, if I have issues with a band or artist, I'll actually say so.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted May 8, 2002 Funny how The Middle will be considered the "Summer 2002" song when it was actually released in the winter of 2001.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 10, 2002 I'm going to go with Sheryl Crow's "Soak Up the Sun"... it's a great song, but it sounds nothing like Crow's other material (too poppy... I had no idea it was her at first) and has the potential to get overplayed really fast.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted May 10, 2002 Funny how The Middle will be considered the "Summer 2002" song when it was actually released in the winter of 2001. its all on when they start to put it into heavy rotation see "bohemian rhapsody"
Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted May 10, 2002 i hate tht fat joe song, which atomatically will make it the winner of the contest, strictly because if i hate a song, it becomes huge
Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted May 11, 2002 1993 - What's Up 4 Non Blondes that was actually "whats goin on" but close enough. i personally think that the new Korn song is going to be huge this summer as well as the cd. i also think that "without e" by eminem will fall victim as well. Ech, if either of those songs are played to death at any time, the only victim will be me. Here's to hoping neither "artist" is ever heard from again... Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 11, 2002 Spiderman OST "Hero" Good god, that song fucking sucks. If that gets "song of the summer"-type airplay, I will kill one of you. We'll have a lottery. Stay tuned.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 11, 2002 The 4 Non Blondes song was called "what's up"...cause I always thought to myself why didn't they call it "what's going on" So the first guy was right.

Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 11, 2002 The 4 Non Blondes song was called "what's up"...cause I always thought to myself why didn't they call it "what's going on" So the first guy was right. This is correct. I imagine it probably has something to do with the Marvin Gaye song and them not wanting people to think it's a cover or get the two confused. Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 23, 2002 examples: 1992 - Life is a Highway Ton Cohcrane 1993 - What's Up 4 Non Blondes 1994 - Shine Collective Soul 1995 - Runaround Blue Traveler 1996 - Counting Blue Cars Dishwalla 1997 - The Way Fastball 1999 - Livin La Vida Loca Ricky Martin 2001 - It's Been Awhile - Staind this is odd, cause i remember 'longview' being the summer anthem of 1994 (if there was one). and, judging from current mtv rotation, it looks like 'without me' will be the big one this year.
