Clash of the Champions.

Boy did I ever love these.

Before Nitro came about, Clash was the mega-show on television for any NWA/WCW fan.

There has been many great Clash's.  What would say are some of the best Clash's period?

Clash I - Sting .vs. Flair - ***** Draw, made Sting, epitomized Flair.

Clash XVIII - Great tag matches from top to bottom of the show.  Really showcased the talent the best of most shows I have ever seen period.

Clash XXI - Sting .vs. Rude @ their best and a excellent World Tag Titles match between Rhodes/Windham and Steamboat/Douglas.

Thoughts?

I also loved the Clash of the Champions cards. It was like a free PPV. Here are some of my favorites...

COTC 1 - The match that made Sting a star. Good undercard as well.

COTC IX - Flair/Funk "I Quit" match. Some other good matches.

COTC XVII- Sting coming back from the hospital after being attacked by Lex Luger. Only to lose the U.S. Title to Rude was great TV, IMO.

COTC XVIII - Jesse Ventura makes his WCW debut.

COTC XVIII - NWA tag tournament.

COTC XX - Show isn't great, but it was WCW's 20th year on TBS.

COTC XXI - Great Sting/Rude match and great NWA/WCW tag title match with Windham/Rhodes vs. Steamboat & Douglas.

That all I can remember for now.

Clash XIX was actually the NWA Tag Tourney and a just awesome show, I am focusing heavily on it in this weeks column.

Damn! I put XVIII on COTC XIX. I won't bother to edit my post (I leave in my mistakes like a man. Only if it's a real bad mistake.), but I thought the show was awesome.

You are ALL forgetting Clash 6, with the Flair-Steamboat 2 of 3 Falls match.

In addition to #6, I'd also go with Clash 7 (Funk-Steamboat for the #1 contendership) and Clash 8 (Flair and Sting vs. Muta and Dick Slater).

Ah the Clash of Champions...I think I need to track some more of these down on tape, they were awesome, a really bigt deal when they were on.

I liked the first 1, and really since its the only one I have on tape, its the one I remember best, besides the ones towards the end which weren't that great.

I can't belive I missed those. It's been along time since those happened, but I thought all of those COTC were great.

14 and 15 both had EXCEPTIONAL main events with Flair taking on Scott Steiner and Bobby Eaton respectively.

I may be wrong, but didn't Flair in a very rare move back when Dusty Rhodes & Jim Herd were running things, offer to job the title to Scott?

Yes, Flair openly acknowledged the fact that he would be willing to put over Steiner as the next babyface world champion. Scott refused out of loyalty to his brother and the team that they were quickly establishing as the best in the world.

Clash 1 was amazing. Speaking of other Clashes-

As a mark I was pissed when Windham turned on Dustin since I was a HUGE Rhodes mark.

Clash I is the best for its greatness up and down the card.

The MX v Fantastics match is ****1/2

Arn/Tully v Windham/Luger is ****1/4

and

Flair v Sting is ****

I can't find a better 3 matches on any other Clash card.

Unfortunately, I only became a WCW fan in 1996, so my only Clash memory was the last one from August 1997, and the "Dinner and a Movie" guys from TBS joined the NWO, so Diamond Dallas Page destroyed their spread and diamond cut the host :)

I remember we first got cable on the night of clash 7,That was a definate turning point as being a wrestling fan.

Clash X I can never forget the monster bump Cactus Jack took during his match against Mil Mascaras.I thought he was dead!

Clash VIII I remember being horrified as Terry Funk put a plastic bag around Ric Flairs head.

And I never marked out more than Clash XVII when Rick Steamboat returned and won the WCW tag titles with Dustin Rhodes.

I remember looking forward to the Clashes as much as the pay per views

I'll give my thoughts in these COTC.

II - Haven't seen it yet.

XIII - From what I remember it sucked. Flair wasn't able to carry the Junkyard Dog in the main event.

XIV - Sting/Luger & Doom have an ok tag match. Barry Windham & Arn Anderson carry some tag team to a watchable match. And a very good Flair/Scott Steiner match.

XXII - Can't remember anything.

XXIII - See Above.

XXIV - See above.

Sorry but for some weird reason I can't find anything on Clash of the Champions XXIII(23)or Clash of the Champions XXIV(24)sorry.

Thanks.

I do know Ric Flair/Arn Anderson had a great 2 out of 3 falls tag match with the Hollywood Blondes at a COTC. That was Flair's first match back on TV. And I belive the last time the Blondes would be together.

Flair wrestled JYD at XI,I wouldn't go as far to say it sucked,It had a decent Midnight Express-Rock n' Roll Express match and a Steiners and Doom match, and in a  "What the hell moment" Lex Luger beat Sid Vicious in like 12-seconds

Guest Tony149

Oops, I made another COTC mistake. It's been so long. Flair/JYD wasn't a good match, IMO. I think COTC XIII had Flair vs. Butch Reed in the main event. I may be wrong...again.

Thanks.

Clash II: Arn & Tully fought Sting & Dusty and the result was a double DQ. The venue barely drew 2,000 fans for the evenings event.

XIII: The "Thanksgiving Thunder" card from my old stomping grounds of Jacksonville, Fl. A terrible undercard with Ric Flair and Arn Anderson flipping coins with the team of Doom to set up a one on one match. The result was Flair taking on Butch Reed in an average match.

Clash XIV: Headlined by the previously mentioned match of Flair and Scott Steiner. The match ended in a draw.

Clash XXII: Dustin Rhodes, Sting, & Cactus Jack beat Big Van Vader, Paul Orndorff, & Barry Windham in the Thundercage match that saw its list of participants change about 8 times in the previous weeks.

Clash XXIII: Barry Whindam and 2 Cold Scorpio had an awesome match for the NWA heavyweight title and Flair and Anderson beat the Hollywood blondes in a ****+ match for the tag team titles.

Clash XXIV: Vader vs. Davey Boy Smith in the main event, Sting and Flair teaming against the Kongs and the return of the Road Warriors via the Z28 Camaro contest.

Hope that helped.

Thank you very much for telling me about the Clash of the Champions!!!

Thanks.

Flair & Arn didn't win the unified NWA/WCW tag titles from the Blondes. They won 2 straight falls, but the second fall was a DQ win for Flair & Arn, As it was caused by Barry Windham attacking Flair. Unless something happened on Saturday Night.

This is going to sound stupid but anybody who finds this out for me we will be great.Does anybody know if they show any build up from WCW Saturday Night on Clash of the Champions XXIV.I know this is kind of outrageuous but if someone can answer this for me I will greatly impresiate it.

Thanks.

Guest Drury37

Oh well,I thought they did and I just bought Clash of the Champions XXIV on EBay and I was hoping they had some lead up video packages for the matches from WCW Saturday Night.Well thanks for answering.

Thanks.

Guest Tony149

You never know though. I can barely remember COTC events. I know some had video packages in them. WCW was never like the WWF where they would air a video package for a match.

Guest Drury37
Posted

Alright, its no problem.I know they cut WCW lead up stuff out of Turner Versions of tapes so I didn't know if they had them on Clash of the Champions. The WWF almost overkills the video packages now.I usually know all the words to them by the time the match is about to happen.

Thanks.
