King of the ring

Take it for what it's worth but i just notcied this article at the Torch:

"PWTorch.com reader and Torch Newsletter subscriber Jeremy Dunn writes...

In a recent Torch Newsletter I read your thoughts about how the King of the Ring tournament should be booked this year. Well, it looks like the tournament isn't even going to be happening.

I was browsing through the latest edition of the WWE Magazine (with Rock and Austin on the cover) and on the pay-per-view calendar they list the June 23 PPV from Columbus, OH as "TBD." I guess this means the end of the King of the Ring tournament. "

It's just a guess but I personally could care less if they did away with the tournament. More often than not, it never reaches or exceeds expectations.

That's because you get a bunch of crap and like 2 wrestlers that you think can even make it.

KOTR has repeatedly been one of the worst WWF PPVs of the year (1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2000 all come to mind) with last year's being surprisingly good (although not because of the tournament). While it's a nice idea, the essential idea (to put over an up-and-coming star for a future push) can be acheived through other means while producing a more well-rounded card. I fully support ditching this PPV (and have never really considered it part of the "Big 4" as some have by talking about the "Big 5").

I'd like to see it stay. I think it's good to have some PPVs with a difference in the year, rather than just generic ones like Judgement Day, No Way Out etc.

Definately.  There is just something about ladder tournaments that I mark out for.  Plus it gives them definate direction for a month or so leading up to the PPV.  It forces them to at least have some consistency for a few weeks.  Plus they can hype the SD vs Raw aspect this year if they want.

I think they should try to seperate the rosters except for say two or three of the big ppv's, say king of the Ring, a traditional Survivor series, and Wrestlemania.

I hope they dont drop the format...I love the tournament..it has been bad some years, but thats only because the bookers screwed it up. they always have to incorporate storylines into the tournament. Just let the wrestling tell the story about the drive to win the king title and get a shot at the next PPV.

Remember WM2000 the game?

Well the WWF(I said i wouldn't call it the WWE) should steal the idea the game had and have the winner of the KOR get a title shot at SummerSlam.

This way, if the fans really care for the winner, then they may be able to launch some new MainEventers.

Otherwise the title shot could act as a rub for some stars, for fans to care.

But admittedly this could be dangerous if the fans don't care.

Like how they gave Mabel the title shot against Diesel?

:-) Just kidding around.  I actually feel the same way...

If they are worried that the tournament idea is not appealing to TV fans, why not have a sat house show and have a same day-same night tournament.. it could become a mecca for workrate wrestling fans like the super 8 and the like.

Even if there were problems in the booking, I love tournaments

The IC where Shamrock won the belt over XPac

The finals of the WCW title : Bret over Benoit

the Survivor Series Rock title win

The Crockett Cups!!

Yeah while some of the tournaments have been bad (Billy Gunn and Mabel winning the tournaments? What the hell?) it's still a good idea I reckon it's just been misused in the recent past. I think they need to focus on the building up of future main eventers as said already and forget about the storylines, because frankly, they make it suck.

it would be truly retarded to dump King of the Ring. Sure the tournaments have sucked. But that doesn't mean tournaments suck. WWF tournaments suck, and they do so for two reasons.

1. Crappy wrestlers in the tourney. It's pretty much the main attraction of the ppv, and just like a main event, it should have quality guys. Would they book Big Show vs. Bradshaw for the tittle at Summerslam? No way in hell. Would they book them in the KOTR finals? I bet they would. And that's why the tourneys suck.

2. Vince's fear of wrestling. Just like everything else, the WWF thinks that if two guys just have a straight match, no one will care, so they write angles to give the match a reason. You know, something that would really get the guys pissed off, like t-shirts, spilled coffee, or shampoo endorsments. The tournament is why the're fighting you twits! That should be the reason! For example, a Tajiri-Kidman match in the tourney could be a great 10 minute spotfest. However, if it happens, it would be three minutes, and it would end with Torrie slapping Tajiri into a rollup. Most of the early round matches aren't even given a chance to be any good with crap like this.

The KOR has been a bad PPV more times than not but that is because of poor booking often.  KOR 2000 had Benoit, ANgle, Jericho, Val Venis, & Eddy, as wel as Crash, Bull, and Rikishi.  So instead of getting Benoit(W)/Jericho, Angle(W)/Val, Eddy(W)/Crash, and Bull/Rikishi(W) and then Angle(W)/Benoit, Eddy(W)/Rikishi and Angle over Eddy in the finals which would guarentee 5 good-great matches we get Benoit/Rikishi(W), VAl(W)/Eddy, Crash(W)/Bull, Angle(W)/Jericho adn a Angle/Rikishi final.  I would have switched Malenko in for Crash if I had to have a small underdog guy too.

How hard was that to book a far superior tourney?

93 & 94 were the best tourneys and it has gone downhill ever since.  They were better because the ME was the finals not a stupid tag match or the title match.  To me KOR is like Royal Rumble the drawing card should be the tourney not the world title.

Although sometimes poorly booked the King of the Ring is a great way to put over a young star which is what it should be about no mistakes have been made such as Mable and Billy but there have also been some great ones such as Kurt and Owen i think the  biggest problem is the after effect when someone wins and then doesn't get the push that they should be getting  also make the card out of high midcard people people in the Euro or IC title hunt a Kurt or Beniot should not even be considered for the tourniment because they are already ligitimint stars

I think the only good tournaments were 93, 94, 96, and 2000.  96 is underrated, but it had Austin's heated rise in the ppv, culminating in the birth of 3:16 (He was getting massive heat in both matches, and actually got pops after beating Mero).  Plus, the ME, featuring Shawn vs. the Bulldog, is an overlooked match on the card (probably because of the Austin 3:16 overshadowing).  But the ppv served it's purpose.  Shawn successfully defended his title, and a midcarder, Steve Austin, plowed his way to the KOTR crown, and it meant something. Same thing with Bret, Owen, and Angle.  I don't think they should can the event, but I feel that the WWE Title match should be right before the KOTR Finals, to give the tournament more meaning.......

I liked 96, and I still say 97 was better than people give it credit for.

As for KOTR, they should have the winner face the World Champ at SummerSlam cuz right now it just doesn't mean anything to be a KOTR anymore. Also, I think in a time like now where you've got a lot of guys like Angle, Jericho, maybe Austin and some of the other guys fighting to get a Title shot, why not just put them all in the Tournament and make the tournament itself the main attraction of the PPV?

Absolutely Agree. The KotR tourney have maybe 6 major players and 2 "floaters" vying for the main event Championship Match at SummerSlam.  Make it MEAN something to the fans.

They better NOT dump the tourny, it can be done so well.....but the writers are  so fucking ignorant.

I really really like KoTR 98, it had some nice matches and the finals match was **** tops, I really did like this ppv, sadly though it's more known for the infamous HITC, but blah...that year was tight.
