Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted May 8, 2002 Winner of the 1977 Triple Crown died at 28. On the date he won the Kentucky Derby. He also fathered 102 stakes claim winners. For a horse he lead a nice life.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted May 8, 2002 Uh...... He's a horse, who cares? The fact that he had 102 kids makes him a little cooler and the Wilt Chamberlin of horses but he is still just an animal who ran fast. Do you think the Panda Fucking WWF will host the funeral? Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 8, 2002 "He's a horse, who cares?" Amen. I thought it was a joke when people were mentioning Secretariat as being one of the most important athletes of the 20th Century. It was a HORSE, for chrissakes.

No horse should be considered an important athlete but winning the Triple Crown is an impressive feat, and Secretariat winning the Preakness by 37 lengths is an amazing accomplishment. Guest Some Guy Report post Posted May 8, 2002 It is an impressive feat but it is still just a horse who ran in circles and then fucked a lot of female horses. Choke One I'm glad your grandfather won on the race adn was able to buy a car. That's what horse racing is for.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 8, 2002 Well why is a human athlete more important then a animal athlete? Pro atheletes are only here to make money for a owner so what does breed matter. No athlete is actually important, they are just people and/or animals making money for playing games. If a human can be considered important to sports then why can't a horse be important to sports? Guest Redhawk Report post Posted May 9, 2002 I agree with El Satanico, the fact that he was a horse doesn't mean he was no less an athlete than a human. Look at Olden Polynice. Can you really say he's not horse-like? And you could say all he did was run fast and then fuck a lot, but you could say the same for Kenny Anderson. What I don't get is how, in the Secretariat episode of Sportscentury, they were talking about his emotions and facial expressions and stuff.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted May 9, 2002 I hear Elmer's are in intense negotians for Seattle Slew. Something about a new quick drying super glue.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 10, 2002 "Well why is a human athlete more important then a animal athlete?" Simple answer: animals aren't athletes. They're animals. Longer answer: Neither the horse nor the jockey could win the race themselves, so neither one of them counts as an athlete. I'm not trying to undermine their achievements; I'm just saying they're not athletes. In individual sports, an athlete is someone who uses both physical and mental prowess, natural ability, and training to give himself the best chance to win by himself. Seattle Slew and Secretariat were certainly great racehorses, but they certainly were not athletes of any kind.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 10, 2002 I suppose track stars use "mental prowess" to run in a straight line. Race horses have natural ability and are trained and they are probably just as smart as some of the dumber basketball and football players. Also by your definition you would consider a racing dog to be a athlete. They have a form of "mental prowess" that makes them chase the rabbit, they have natural ability, they are trained and they can win the race by themselves. Guest Some Guy Report post Posted May 10, 2002 Race dogs chase the rabit through instinct not mental prowess. I think what Tom was getting at is that race horses are bred specially to be race horses and jockeys are guys who are too small to play a real sport so they ride on a horse, let him do all the work and then collect their paycheck. The horse is not an althlete and neither is the jockey. The jockey does nothing more athletic than holding on to the reigns and whipping the horse in the ass to make the poor animal run faster. I consider spriners to be athletes but running track is not a sport. The Decathalon is because it requires more than just running. IMO running/skating (in Hockey, figure skating in not a sport) is an aspect of all sports but is not one all in of itself.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 11, 2002 "I suppose track stars use "mental prowess" to run in a straight line." Some sports require more mental prowess than others. But in general, athletes need to have at least a good mind for their sport and the ability to make quick decisions. "Race horses have natural ability and are trained and they are probably just as smart as some of the dumber basketball and football players." They're still just animals. I'm not doubting the mental midget status of a few players, but I think they're all smarter than a freaking horse. "Also by your definition you would consider a racing dog to be a athlete." Well, no, slugger, since you skipped this line: "Animals aren't athletes. They're animals." If you dislike my definition of an athlete so much, why not come up with your own?
