Make contentious statement pop culture style

Guest Choken One

In the music fourm, we have a thread where some one makes a statement about something and the next person makes a rebuttal either supporting the previous statement or disagreeing with the previous statement and do it a nice explantory reason. After that, make a statement of your own and someone will respond to that...I'll start us off here...

Statement: StarWars is over rated as movies but not as entertainment.

REBUTTAL: 100% agreed. I don't see the entire hype over that big-budget B-Movie trilogy. They just made Lucas lose the entire independent spirit he originally had (for details on loss of indy-spirit, see: The Phantom Menace, Episode I), but they're still extremely fun to watch (and well-acted for science fiction).

STATEMENT: The most overlooked horror film series in history on a middleground field (not underground, not mainstream, but well-known) is the Phantasm series.

Rebuttal:

You're right the Phantasm series is severly overlooked and it's a damn shame. It's well written, has good actors and has an interesting fairly original story behind it. Yet everyone seems to never mention it when discussing good horror movies. I don't get it.

Statement:

The A-Team is the best crime fighting team to ever appear on tv.

REBUTTAL: Disagreed. Do I need to remind you of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

STATEMENT: "That 80's Show" would be funnier if the writers got rid of the periodical jokes and just tried to make it generally funny. Notice how the funniest character, Margaret, has NOTHING to do with the 80's...I think that says something.

Rebuttal:  That 80's show is nothing but a cheap rip-off of that 70's show, and it needs a lot more working for it to even be a funny show

Rebuttal: Mystery Science Theater 3000 is the funniest show ever, but Simpsons is pretty close competition.

Statement: Rose McGowan is the best actress who's NEVER been in anything good.  (Say Scream and the mighty JINGUS will hurt you.)

Rebuttal: She appeared (and provided much boobilicious entertainment) in Scream :)

Statement: "Cheers" was really unfunny. Why it's regarded as such a TV classic (not to mention the fact that it's taking up syndicated timeslots better used for better 80s shows) is beyond me.

Rebuttal: Agreed. Woody Harrelson was the only consistently funny person on the show.

Statement: The Phantom Menace has no replay value whatsoever. As whenever you rewatch the film, you realize how stupid and imcompetent it really is.

Rebuttal: Can't disagree with you. It's just an all around bad movie.

Statement: Although at first I thought it was a horrible casting decision, Toby Maguire was the perfect Spiderman.

Rebuttal: Agreed. Spider-man is intended to be a dork, loser, geek whatever. Maguire is perfect.

Statement: (on Star Wars again) Ewan MacGregor is the only actor in the new films who actually breahtes life into his character. Everyone else seems to be made of wood.

You dare disrespect Christopher Lee by implying that will not give life to his character? He was Dracula fer chrissakes now proceed to go chop your hands off.

Bruce Campbell is the greatest living B movie actor

Rebuttal

I agree. He has a fan base like no one else. I don't think he has the acting ability to find success in the mainstream, but he rules in B-movies.

Statement

The 1980's were the best era for horror movies. They were fun and were made for horror movie fans. Horror movies these days try to be cool, slick and MTV videoish. Also, they all try to have "shock endings". They don't have the spirit of a true horror film (with a few exceptions).

no... no... not this again... dammit! not a contentious statements thread... I don't need to be shown up daily in TWO... damn, forgot about OAOAT... THREE forums!

Non-rebuttal: It's true.  Though Charles Band had yet to become the true Prince Corman, he was quite active in the '80s, and Full Moon Pictures was formed (with the Paramount deal!) in 1989.  The cheesiest of the '80s are fond nostalgic childhood memories (which, unlike some other nostalgic '80s memories, DON'T attempt lame come-backs), although in truth the movies weren't in and of themselves cheesier than cheesy movies from other decades.  The '80s were the heyday of the slasher film, which I personally don't like all that much but a lot of other people do.  Franchises such as Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street began and continued... damn, I'm writing too much, someone will out-rebuttal me.  The main reason the '80s is such an important decade for horror though, is because the rise in popularity and availability of VHS cassettes and VCR's meant that all of the movies were accessible to renters and mainstream audiences after their theatrical runs.  The majority of these '80s movies are still available to this day, another reason why the types of movies seem better, because there just aren't enough movies from any previous decade to compare.

Statement: The infamous Cannibal Holocaust is the sickest movie ever made that is fairly easily accessible.

Rebuttal: yes, it really is that sick.  However, I dispute the claim of it being easily accessible; I had to by my (pirated) copy off Ebay to the tune of $30.

Statement: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4: A New Generation is easily the worst fucking piece of shit to have ever masqueraded as a "horror" movie.

Rebuttal: Agreed. I felt more chills up my spine watching Elmo in Grouchland. Not that I've ever seen it. And no the Scream or teen/slasher flicks wouldn't constitute "horror".

Statement: Newsradio is easily one of the top 5 sitcoms EVER.

Rebuttal: How in the blue hell can I possibly rebut that? NR is my all-time favorite sitcom. You, me and Spaceman Spiff should bombard Columbia Tristar with letters demanding season releases on DVD.

Statement: Star Trek: Deep Space 9 was the best ST show EVER.

(and what is this Cannibal Holocaust thing?)

Rebuttal - Only the first Star Trek was any good as it didn't have this entire contunuity shit and pandering to the trekkies that all sequels have had.

Statement - the "les Diaboliques", "Halloween 1" ending should never be used in a film again as if they stayed down it would be shocking.

REBUTTAL: Seeing as how I haven't seen Halloween in a LONG fucking time, I assume you mean the "body can't be found" thing? Nah, I like that ending. But I prefer the Phantasm ending better :D

Movie soundtracks are either great or shit. Give 2 examples of what you feel are great, and 2 of what you feel are shit.

Rebuttal:  Great album in my opinion would be Judgement Night it featured Rap & Rock collaborations, every song on the OST fit the concept, some favorites of mine are Onyx & Biohazarrd "Judgement Night" , Helmet & House of Pain "Just Another Victim", Ice T & Slayer "Disorder".  This album happen years before the NuMetal sound became so popular

Spawn was another good concept album, of Rock & Electronica collabrations.  Tom Morello & Orbit "Satan", Marlyn Manson & Sneaker Pimps "Long Road Out of Hell" were the popular songs.  The soundtrack follows the movie as Spawn would go through emotional, moral, physical transformations.

Bad Soundtrack extra volumes in general would be, Hackers volume 2, since the songs on the disc were not in the movie and was made only to profit on the popularity of the electronica & techno sound of the 90s.

Statement:  There are too many tv channels on cable, is there a need for 5 women only programming channels?

Rebuttal: there are not enough channels until there is a 24-hour wrestling channel.  (A 24-hour "Obscure Horror Flicks" channel might also be accepted.)

Statement: even though it was still a bad movie overall, Jason X was the best F13 movie.

Rebuttal:  but what is the chance of it being on standard cable?  right now on Time Warner where I live we have 71 channels, 20 of which I watch casually, the rest is just filler for profit.  Just recently Comedy Central was put on regular cable!!!!, Still don't have UPN damn it!!!!! :(

Statement:  Mini dish satillite better than cable?

Statement:  Mini dish satillite better than cable?

Rebuttal:

That's more of a question then a statement.

"mini dish" satellite is better than regular cable. "mini dish" satellite is about equal to digital cable. Digital cable is slightly better because the "mini dish" can lose its signal during big storms. If you get a hard rain or very hard winds there's a good chance it will affect your "mini dish".

Statement:

Steven Spielberg is a overrated director who is only as good as his material. Also he tries too hard to be politically correct in his movies and it affects his movies in a negative way.

It's true, apart from JAWS, Indiana Jones and Close Encounters, All Spielberg's films have been to cutesy, and family friendly.

The Matrix was unoriginal, ripping off MegaZone23, Sonic The Hedgehog and StarWars, and tried to be too clever.

Rebuttal: I'm admittedly not a fan of the Friday the 13th series, but I enjoyed parts of Jason X nonetheless, so I'll take that as true by default.

STATEMENT

Non-rebuttal: Yes! Yes! Yes! Ummm... not totally sure about it ripping off those movies, but the whole "this world is not real / you are being controlled" is really such a simple plot.  Were it not for The Matrix's "revolutionary special effects" (which, now having been ripped off in EVERY MOVIE EVER MADE SINCE, are starting to get really annoying... not that they were ever really that impressive to me in the first place), nobody would give a damn about it.  The same concept is executed much better in They Live.  Yes, I'm being uncharacteristically serious too.

Statement: They Live is actually a lot better than most people give it credit for.  It's easily the best movie with a wrestler in it ever, but, since that's a fairly easy title to attain, I'll call it director John Carpenter's overlooked gem.

Rebuttal: Agreed. Many consider this Carpenter's 'jumping off point' but this movie was brilliant, IMO. Piper's famous fight scene in the middle is enough to warrant a rental.

Statement: The Clerks animated series is the best thing Kevin Smith has done so far, in terms of movies or television. Let the flaming begin.

Rebuttal:  As for the Matrix for not being orginal, well if you ever took an intro to film class you would notice that, the whole "is this reality" angle is as old as the movie industry.  The Matrix took the "spots" from Hong Kong action (Yuen Woo Ping), sci-fi, surreal movies of the past and package it into a movie that was probably Keanu's best action movie to ever.  Also the bullet time special effect was a sweet innovation which everbody is using today.

They Live is one of 3 John Carpeters good movies The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China are the others.

Statement:  The Tick both animated and live action were more entertaining than the Kevin Smith Clerks cartoon

"Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" were neither cutesy nor family-friendly.

REBUTTAL: Aside from Slap Shot, The Bad News Bears, Caddyshack, and Major League, no sports comedy is good. Unless you count Play It To The Bone as a sports comedy, because that was hi-fucking-larious.

STATEMENT: Movies that deal with the occult are always the same: Satan is bad, God is good, blah blah blah, and then God's chosen warriors win. We need a change!

And just for the record, raza...

03. Kirk Hammett & DJ Orbital - "Satan"

09. Prodigy & Tom Morello - "One Man Army"
