Olympic Pro Wrestling?

Recommended Posts

Guest Dark Lotus

OK, here's my idea.  Let's just say that pro wrestling has been accepted as an Olympic sport.  Now booking is not an issue here, who wins and who loses, that will be decided by an independent committee, but the winners are decided on actual skill, not by who wins or loss. Only the in-ring product matters.  Each country can send their 3 best wrestlers.

So who's your "Dream Team"?  I figure you can easily do 4, possibly 5 countries... beyond that it might be a bit tougher.  USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico, maybe UK... if you can come up with more countries, great, but those are the only ones I can come up with 3 offhand.  :)

Team USA:

Angle (DUH!)

Malenko

Eddy

Team Canada:

Benoit

Jericho

Storm

Team Japan:

Liger

Misawa

Mutoh

Team Mexico:

Super Crazy

Psicosis

Juvy

Team UK:

Regal

Bulldog

Smiley

(Ok, I admit I'm showing my ignorance of overseas wrestling.  Deal.  :))

I would of done the same choices as you. If Olympic Pro Wrestling were to become an Olympic sport I highly doubt they would have bookers. Let them shoot.

I would have switched Misawa with someone else. Same with Bulldog, Super Crazy, and Psychosis. I don't know who right now, I'll re-think it.

That's why I based it on in-ring performance rather than who wins or loses.  If you're gonna shoot, you take guys like Bradshaw or Mike Barton.  Basically you have a mega card one night, and the medals are awarded, win or lose, to the person who "performed" the best, rather than who got jobbed.  The matches are just there to give them a place to show off.

I think Pro Wrestling as an Olympic sport would be fun to watch. I would rather see them shoot, but either way I think it would be fun.

and wouldn't it be humiliating for Angle to win, say the silver medal, and someone else (Storm?) gold?  BAM!  Insta-feud when they get back to the Whiff.

I don't think it should be judged on just one person's performance but rather two wrestlers working in tandem to create a match. It would be kind-of like doubles figure skating where judges judge by using a system where moveset, psychology, drama, etc., equates into a high score while blown spots are deductions. I don't have a dream team but it would have to be two guys who are familiar with each other and have consistently good matches and chemistry like Angle/Austin or A.Dragon/Lo-Ki.

Now that's a thought... I like that RC.

Maybe the US sends Angle n Austin, Canada sends Benoit and Bret, etc... not bad at all.

But remember, with Vince's wrestlers working the show, wait five minutes and The Rock will come out and Rock Bottom all their asses.

"Olympic roody poos, come see my new movie Scorpion King in theaters April 5th."

The Olympic fans will promptly wonder what the hell a roody poo is, but won't have to think long before Storm, Benoit, and Angle shoot on Rock and beat the shit out of him.

If only dreams could come true.

With RollingChop's idea in mind, adding my own feeling that there would have to be a token division of "weight classes" (actually style divisions) to account for junior and heavyweight style differences and using only wrestlers who haven't retired....

Team USA:

Junior: Billy Kidman vs. Rob Van Dam

HWT: Curt Hennig (w/work boots on... please, god, bring the work boots) vs. Kurt Angle (see above)

Team Canada:

Junior: Lance Storm vs. Chris Jericho

HWT: Val Venis (or anyone but Test) vs. Chris Benoit (It's a real shame Bret's retired - he'd be a shoe-in)

Team Japan:

Junior: Jushin Liger vs. Great Sasuke

HWT: Misawa vs. Tatsuohiro Goto .... just kidding, folks, I meant Keiji Mutoh.

Team Mexico:

Junior: Ultimo Dragon vs. Super Crazy

HWT: Eddy Guerrero vs. some expat who switched his citizenship to Mexican so he could compete... say, Senor Miguel Awesome.

Team UK:

Junior: Sorry, folks, nothing to see here.

HWT: William Regal vs. Davey Boy Smith (or, if you'll permit a slight break, Fit Finlay)

Team Iran:

The Iron Sheik vs. His Gut

Ultimo Dragon's retired, but could return because he found a surgeon who may be able to perform some weird surgery he'd need. Heres my top two for each division of each country:

US Heavyweight:

Steve Austin

Kurt Angle

US Lightweight:

Christopher Daniels

Eddie Guerrero (don't kid yourselves, he's born in America and naturalized here)

Canadian Heavyweight:

Chris Benoit

Val Venis (grasping for straws)

Canadian Lightweight:

Lance Storm

Chris Jericho

Mexico:

El Hijo del Santo

Blue Panther

Shocker

Silver King

(I don't really have any idea of where these guys would fit in the weight standings at this time)

Japan Heavyweight:

Yuji Nagata

Kawada or Mutoh

Japan Lightweight:

Jushin Liger

Minoru Tanaka

I was thinking this exact thing the other day after watching figure skating in the Olympics.  It would be run EXACTLY like figure skating so that you would work in pairs or fours or sixes or whatever the "event" i.e. match type (no real gimmick matches) to put on the most well crafted art.

Team USA

Singles: Kurt Angle vs Steve Austin

Tag Team: could be any combination of four workers.  If you want singles I'd suggest maybe Austin & Angle as well with Eddy Guerrero, Rey Mysterio Jr. (from Texas & California respectively) or HHH (Ha, pro wrestling will never happen in the Olympics for one reason...drug tests~!), Jerry Lynn, Christopher Daniels, Diamond Dallas Page, Michael Modest, Carl Malenko, George Hines & Shocker! (He's from California~!).  This team could be very large as well but I'm at a loss for who could actually make it right now.

Team Canada

Singles: Chris Benoit vs Chris Jericho

Tag Team: Benoit/Jericho vs Christian/Edge

You might even be able to get Bret Hart out of retirement for this.  Other possible members include; Brett Como, Tony Kozina, Lance Storm, Val Venis, Steve Corino (born in Winnipeg), Pierre Oulette, Quiet Storm

Team Japan

Singles: Toshiaki Kawada vs Yuji Nagata

Tag Team:  You could go with Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima vs Jun Akiyama/Yuji Nagata or combine any four heavywieghts like Mutoh/Hase/Misawa/Kobashi/Ikeda/Ishikawa...lets just say it would be a deep team and the Olympic trials would be better than the Olympics themselves:)

Team England

Doug Williams, Jody Fleisch, Steven Regal, David Taylor, Rob Brookside, James Mason, Doc Dean, Norman Smiley, Johnny Smith

Team Mexico

El Hijo del Santo vs Blue Panther would be a definite gold medal match.  Then you can go with any combination of; Satanico/Ultimo Guerrero/Rey Bucanero/Felino/Black Warrior/Silver King/Dr. Wagner Jr./Mr. Niebla/Villano IV/etc etc the list goes on and on and on.  Another country where the trials could rival the Olympics themselves.

Team Puerto Rico

Carlos Colon, Ray Gonzalez and assorted other IWA & WWC guys.

You could do junior divisions in singles and tag teams as well.  Pro wrestling would NOT be a shoot in the Olympics.  95% of wrestlers couldn't shoot in an Olympic manner anyway.  They would compete as countries against each other with the workers from each country working to put on the best match by the judges' criteria.  Possible judges could be Meltzer or Keller but should probably be divided amongst countries to avoid as much bias as possible.  Herb Kunze & Scott Keith would be a nice cross-section of judges from Canada:)

Some things to note about certain wrestler's home countries

-Iron Shiek is from Hungary

-There are no Russian wrestlers

-La Parka is from Peru

Germany, Samoa and very few other countries could send teams as well.

That's an interesting idea...and the dreamteams are pretty well set, but man just thinking of it like that would be so weird, it would be like figure skating.

I, too, have had that very idea. As for the competitors...

UNITED STATES

Heavyweight:

Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle

Junior Heavyweight:

Christopher Daniels vs. Trent Acid

CANADA

Heavyweight:

Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho

Junior Heavyweight:

Lance Storm vs. Christian

MEXICO

Er...not big into lucha names...but La Parka and Psicosis would be in there...

JAPAN

Heavyweight:

Misawa vs. Akira Taue

Junior Heavyweight:

Jushin Liger vs. CIMA

UK

Heavyweight:

William Regal vs. Fit Finlay

Junior Heavyweight:

Couldn't tell ya...

So you want them to do threeway matches????? That would suck ass man.

That one guy who made a Pureto Rico team........that is not a country kid.

Wrestling will never be in the olykmpics but here is my teams any way.

America-

SCSA(cause he brings the good shit and the crowds love him)

Booker T(to represent)

RVD(my main man)

Mexico-

Konan(he can do some good wrestling)

Ray Mysterio juinoir when he had a mask(he sucked shit without it)

Super Crazy(cause he had good matches in ECW and was one cool cat)

Japan-

Kenta Kobashi(he is off the chain)

Taka Mitchenoku(He sucks but I don't know alot of wrestlers there)

Tajiri(he has some kicks that make you go damn)

England-

British Bulldog(he is a good ass power superstar)

David Tailor(I think that was his name)

Guy in WCW who did the superkick(he was ugly but I think he was ok)

I would put Norman and Regal but Norman is French and Regal is so suckass I would put the queen of that shit country instead of his boring ass.
