Wrestling's saddest moments

Recommended Posts

Guest dreamer420

I actually just received a copy of Raw is Owen in the mail today and when I stuck it in the VCR to check the quality the little video package they played that was narrarated by Vince had me in tears right at the beginning.  I had to shut if off since I was leaving for work shortly after.

The closest that I have ever come to crying was an Owen Hart-related moment, which is actually doubly poignant considering what has happened in the last 24 hours.

Bret Hart reuniting the Hart Foundation on Raw by breaking up a scuffle between Owen and Davey Boy Smith. Bret and Owen had been feuding for years, and for them to be reunited, it had to be a particularly effective turn, which it was.

Bret basically gave a speech saying that the WWF, and WWF fans had been pushing the 2 of them apart since day one, and at first they had fallen for it, but Bret realised that family was more important, and that the American fans were garbage.

Bret's point was that blood is thicker than water, and when he started saying to Owen stuff like "Who was there for you when you were getting picked on by that teacher in 4th grade?", and Owen started crying, it was a genuinely moving moment. It was also incredibly surreal, as it was sort of presented as a heel promo.

Raw is Owen that was just unbelievable.

Foley's video after he lost the No Way Out match and also when they interviewed him after he lost at WM2000. It was done totally out of character and it was just the realisation that he would never wrestle again that got me, he'd been such a wrestler and entertainer.

The History video was amazing, just seeing all those moments were sad, especially the way things are going now.

Raw is Owen when Debra said something to the effect of "I looked at my calendar and saw that I had an autograph signing with Owen next week."

I can honestly say that I have never cried from wrestling, but it's been close:

Liz-Macho Man

When HBK passed out during the match, and they did a video on him... I was a mark, then, but still.

Raw is Owen (didn't cry, but I did get misty eyed)

Right now I would have to say that hearing about all of these well-respected wrestlers dying.  What's even more sad, is thnking of what can possibly be going through Bret Hart's mind.

When I was a young mark, I cried like a baby a few weeks before WresleMania VIII when they were claiming that Hogan's match with Sid would be his final one... they aired this Hogan memorial special highlighting all of his famous moments and then when the end came, and Vince McMahon told Hogan that whatever he decided to do the fans would be with him... and with those last words going something like "Thank you for magic, thank you for the memories... and thank you, for Hulkamania."

I also got a little misty eyed when I saw the small tribute to the Bulldog last week and when the WWE had that really small tribute to Wahoo McDaniel and Lou Thesz... even if they could've done better, the images of them along with that slow piano music was enough

I actaully shed a few tears this weekend as we watched Canadian Stampede. At the end of the show the entire Hart family is in the ring and Owen and Davey are with their children.  It had me in tears knowing that those kids wouldn't get to see their fathers again plus it was the last time that we got to see all the Hart together and happy.

The Bulldog's passing had me choked up...can't say I actually cried, but its so sad to know that the Hart Family, one of the greatest wrestling families ever, if not THE greatest, has been through SO much in the last 5 years or so..its a damn shame whats happend to the legacy of that family.

This has been the Taker Mark

Actually, other than Owen and Savage/Liz, I think just watching Foley walk to the back after the HITC at No Way Out 2000 got me a little choked up.  Just watching him look back at the ring the way he did...eeesh.

The saddest thing that had me choked up to the point of near tears was watching Raw is Owen. From beggining to end and watching all the wrestlers do their comments was the saddest I've ever felt watching wrestling.

Although it wasn't sad, I got a little misty eyed watching the WWF Kid Rock desire video. That little 4 minute segment took me back and showed me the good and the bad and why I will continue to watch wrestling until the bitter end.(which will hopefully be never)

Something else that gets to me sometimes is the Austin "Desire" video. Especially in the end when Austin is staggering around after Owen had dropped him on his head. It was such a moving image of what he went through to become what he has.

I tell you what...  when the Desire video just came out

1) Stone cold was officially at that point overshadowed by the Rock.

2) The Rock had just destroyed ALL of booker t's heat by no selling his entire list of finishers.

3) Steve austin on the other hand had just spent the entire year playing the coward heel destroying his reputation...selling even for Matt Hardy (yes he won clean but the very next RAW, if you remember, Matt Hardy got quite a bit of offense which saw Austin running away).

4)  He was putting on great matches with everybody and he just revealed that HIS BACK WAS BROKEN MOST OF THE YEAR (not in the video, was on 1wrestling I think).

and after a HORRIBLE summer...Steve Austin was carrying the promotion putting in overtime letting RVD go over him clean (albeit after the taping was done, but it was still nice to see) - letting Kurt angle go clean...when he had the WWF title in a time when the title had become worthless, I thought he deserved a LOT better.

The desire video just cemented my feelings because the scene of him walking away and fading away had me thinking his time was up and his final run in the WWF had been a joke.

I was teary eyed.

Owen's Raw definetly, he gave so much, got so little, and went too soon.

But you are forgetting the things that were so bad, they made you cry... the hand... The Hand... Mae Young giving birth to a HAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The news of Owen's death was easily the saddest, i can't really add much to what people have already said really. The way he died was the hardest thing to come to term with, in a stupid way i don't think i would have felt quite so upset if he'd died outside of the ring, it just seemed so tragically cruel and ridiculous.

Many other moments are emotional or touching but not really 'sad' to me personally. The Owen Raw was quite uplifting in a way as it was a celebration which lifted the sadness in a strange way, it was mainly due to the tone of the show, which was respectful and emotional without being overly mournful in a depressing way. Foley's farewell to the fans in ECW after his match against Mikey Whipwreck was also an emotional moment as it also encapsulated how much wrestling actually means to people and how it inspires genuine emotion or affection. It shows why Foley was special.

I don't know why but i feel very indifferent to Davey Boy's death, maybe i'm more cynical these days but i feel the tributes directed towards him for being 'a great guy' to be phony. I didn't know him of course but its harder to shake literally countless stories about someone being a scumbag rather than just one or two. Coupled with the fact the same persons in-ring heyday was long gone anyway i find myself not truly caring about his passing at all, despite having some fond memories of his career.

Nostril, I know exactly how you feel, man. I just got the new Austin DVD and watching what he went through during 2001 and seeing the respect the people they interviewed for DVD like Arn Anderson and Ric Flair just hit me like a rock. Thery should have put the Austin "Desire" video on the DVD, dammit....

davey's death really hit me because bret, davey, and owen were my wrestlers growing up.  the three greatest in my eyes and now two of them are gone when I believe that davey had a legit chance of getting back in the wwe.  he still looked to be in wicked shape from the video of his last match.
