I've read that Frank Herbert who wrote Dune was going to sue over the simalarities. there is a Japanese movie (which I can't remember the title of) that the idea of characters like R2D2 + C3P0 protecting the princess was based on. Never heard of a LOTR rip off though.. I always thought it was just a futurised fairytale. But for some reason I always loved the bounty hunters.

Im my humble opinion, I thought the first 3 were brilliant storytelling with characters the viewer would actually be intrested in. Then I saw Episode I, which I think fucked the whole series. I mean, could you honestly imagine a scene with Jar Jar and oh say, Han Solo? No. However, I heard Epsiode II did a good job, and I'll probably go check it out tonight. I doubt it pulled the series back to where it belongs. Maybe it's just me, but "IV V and VI" just feel like seperate movies, which sucks because that's not how it's supposed to be.

I read that Herbert was critical of Lucas for including religion in the movie. He said it was against sci-fi. It sounds to me like sour grapes.

I think that movie is Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa?

My theory on the Star Wars movies is that in the original three, people tended to like them best in order from first to last, and in the newest three people will probably end up liking them with Episode I being last, you know reversed and stuff(huh, huh, huh)  Shut up Butthead!  Screw you Beavis!(*smack*)

Agree, except that most people think Empire Strikes Back was the best one and more people will see Episode III because that is when Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader.

Ummm... so I guess George Lucas is gay then.  What's wrong with calling them that, I mean that's what their titles are.  It's a concept known as numerical order, kinda important in a series...

I don't agree with the "gay" comment, but I also don't agree that the "numerals" are important to the series. They only started using those numerals a few years back and the series seemed to do fine without them 20 years beforehand.

 

I think he just meant that they aren't the original titles, and they sound lame. Which they do. "Episode" *anything* sounds lame...

Not to mention the Final Fantasy movie. Way too much New Age Religious propaganda throughout that movie for my tastes. ;p

Actually it's Hidden Fortress, by Akira Kurosawa. I think George Lucas has admitted that the film was a very big influence on him. It's very obvious when you see it, since you in a way have other versions of R2D2, C3PO, Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi. It's an awesome film in any event (then again, it IS a Kurosawa film ).
