Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 16, 2002 For instance, my favorite Bob Dylan album is Blonde on Blonde. If you have a favorite Dylan, name it. Add more acts. We need spirited, vibrant discussion. This folder has become incredibly lethargic. I'm very, very disappointed in all of you. Let's go.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted May 16, 2002 Well not everyone here likes Bob Dylan or Elvis Costello. Favourite Metallica album is Master of Puppets. Its single handly the best metal album in existance
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 16, 2002 I once owned a copy of Master of Puppets. I liked it. The first half was a lot better than the second, but it's my favorite Metallica almost by default.

Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 16, 2002 My favorite Radiohead album is OK Computer. Same here. I'd map it out like this: OK Computer > The Bends > Kid A > Amnesiac > Pablo Honey Throw the Airbag EP in there somewhere, too. But OK Computer is my favorite Radiohead, along with being my favorite album altogether.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 16, 2002 my favorite dylan album would be 'blood on the tracks,' barely nudging out 'blonde on blonde.' i think the overall quality of the lyrics in 'blood on the tracks' is better, and it's easily dylan's best set of vocal performances on record. my favorite radiohead album is 'the bends.' i do love 'ok computer' but i have an inexplicable preference for 'the bends.' and 'street spirit (fade out)' is one of my favorite songs, ever. my favorite nirvana album is 'in utero.' in my opinion, it just blows 'nevermind' out of the water, it has a sound that is so much more dark and raw. 'nevermind' always sounded too slick & poppy for me. cobain's songwriting was catchy enough on its own, & steve albini took the sound & fucked it up (in a good way). 'in utero,' to me, is alternative music.

Agreed, more or less. I just think Blonde on Blonde has a few songs that put it completely over the top. In terms of a cohesive album, musically and thematically, I'd give the nod to John Wesley Harding, but it just doesn't have many of the absolutely superb moments that other Dylan albums have. my favorite nirvana album is 'in utero.' in my opinion, it just blows 'nevermind' out of the water, it has a sound that is so much more dark and raw. 'nevermind' always sounded too slick & poppy for me. cobain's songwriting was catchy enough on its own, & steve albini took the sound & fucked it up (in a good way). 'in utero,' to me, is alternative music. Definitely. In Utero is the superior album on all counts. Agreed with Pinkerton being Weezer's best album. It should remain that way, too, as I don't foresee Rivers doing anything that interesting again when he can record horrible albums like that last one and go platinum. And because everyone expects it, I'd have to say that while This Year's Model is Elvis Costello's best album, Get Happy! is probably my favorite. There's a distinction to be made between the two. Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 16, 2002 My favorite Smashing Pumpkins album is Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness because, even though Siamese Dream is a stronger album overall, I like my favorite songs off MCatIS better than my favorite songs off Siamese Dream. Best (only good?) Metallica album by far is Master of Puppets. Even though I was never really into Metallica, "Master of Puppets" is still a very well constructed song, although I really liked "Orion" too for some reason. My favorite Nirvana album is actually Bleach. Nevermind is WAY too poppy and overrated (I'm so sick of "Smells Like Teen Spirit", especially given its much-touted undeserving status as one of the best songs of the '90s, maybe socially, but as an actual song? Forget it!). I used to like In Utero a lot (at a time when I just downloaded and burned every CD, I even actually bought it), but now I just can't listen to it anymore. A lot of the lyrics are nonsensical garbage, and even though Nirvana music was never rocket science in the first place, the majority of the music on In Utero is, while more true than Nevermind by not being polished and poppy, barely listenable. I also have personal issues with "Rape Me", which has to be the most degenerate song I've ever heard... My favorite Beatles album is 1, simply because I was never a big Beatles fan, and although I've tried (I really have), I still only really like a few Beatles singles ("A Hard Day's Night" and "Yesterday" are my favorites), Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and a Beatles song I heard earlier this morning on the radio... something about a nowhere man in a nowhere land? I could just really relate to that living in the suburbs and being consistently bored such that I have to spend ALL DAY ON THE INTERNET AT THIS SITE! Ack! I love you guys, but honestly, isn't that a little pathetic? Sorry... that's my little mini-rant for the day. Dylan? Radiohead? Weezer? Uhhh... hmmmm... no comment? Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted May 16, 2002 I agree with Master of Puppets, even though I really like Ride the Lightning as well by Metallica. I thought Bleach was Nirvana's best album as well. Nothing's Shocking is Jane's Addiction best S.C.E.I.N.C.E. is Incubus' best album (but I like all of their stuff, but if i had to choose one, it would be this one) The Low End Theory is a Tribe Called Quest best 40oz to Freedom/Sublime is Sublime's best(I love both those albums too much to decide, so I choose both) I love any album by led Zepplin up to Physical Graphitti(sp?) Man I can't think of anything else, but I am sure there are many more I own, just can't think of them right now.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 16, 2002 My favorite Smashing Pumpkins album is Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness because, even though Siamese Dream is a stronger album overall, I like my favorite songs off MCatIS better than my favorite songs off Siamese Dream. I do thinkMellon Collie... is good, for the most part, but it's also got a lot of filler. Lots and lots of filler. Siamese Dream is easily the best thing they ever did. I might even put Adore in front Mellon Collie. I'll have to think about that. I also have personal issues with "Rape Me", which has to be the most degenerate song I've ever heard... From what I understand, the intentions behind that song are good. I seem to recall Cobain saying it was about a rapist going to jail and, in turn, being raped by his fellow prisoners. Not the most intelligent morality tale ever, but it isn't the depraved garbage you might imagine it to be. That would be "Nowhere Man." Have you seriously given their singles the old college try? They're not hard to like. I'd definitely pick up the blue and red greatest hits packages before 1, which leaves out quite a few of their best singles. To each his own, I guess, but not liking the Beatles is somewhat akin to frowning upon joy and happiness. Favorite Beatles album is Abbey Road, by the way. Did I already say that? Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 16, 2002 About giving music the old college try in general, although I try and do so as often as I can, due to the fact that I not only am lacking in funds but in bandwidth (28.8, so I couldn't even pirate the music if I wanted! hmmph...) a LOT of stuff slips through the cracks, and I mean a lot. I really do try though, but you can say I'm held back by wanting to get stuff that I've heard in the past and know is good before trying something new that just might be good and wasting either twenty minutes to a half an hour or $15-$20. As for The Beatles, I try and listen to as many Beatles songs as I can, but my parents have hid their Beatles records away in some secret stash of their really really really good records because I can't find any for the life of me (there's Plastic Ono Band and Harrison's All Things Must Pass, which I have yet to listen to but have heard is excellent, but the only Beatles album they have that I've found is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band). I'm not going to lie and say The Beatles aren't a great band, because they are, and a lot of their songs are brilliant, but they just don't do it for me. As great as their songs are, I guess they're almost too great, and that's why I don't really like listening to most of them. It may sound a little warped, but I have no other logical explanation for why I don't like The Beatles. I look to music and movies as tastes like any other. Say you don't like potatoes, but every single person you've ever met has said potatoes are the greatest food dish of all time. When they're disappointed with you because you don't like potatoes and think potatoes are overrated, how are you to explain that you just don't like the taste? In a food sense, I guess The Beatles are mostly too rich and I can't take that. I do try though, honest!

Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted May 16, 2002 Hmmmmm...all right. Favorite albums. Alice in Chains: Jar of Flies > Dirt > Unplugged > "Tripod" (Alice in Chains) > Facelift > Sap Radiohead: OK Computer > Kid A > > Amnesiac > The Bends >>> Pablo Honey Nirvana: In Utero > Unplugged > Nevermind > Bleach > Incesticide The Beatles: The White Album > Revolver > Abbey Road > Sgt. Pepper > Rubber Soul >>>>> Let It Be
Guest Report post Posted May 16, 2002 Yeah, I have the same Radiohead album order as well, with the exception of Kid A being second best and The Bends being a VERY close third. I just don't listen to Pablo Honey all that much. As for favorite album ever, OK Computer gets that nod. Favorite Beatles album? Damn you Kinetic, for putting my thoughts up before I get them out. Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted May 16, 2002 Radiohead- Pablo Honey is my favorite album of theirs. Much more organic (but Just(you do it to yourself) is my favorite Radiohead song) Metallica- Ride The Lightning (I think this is the greatest Metallica album. Bob Dylan- Highway 61 Revisited Beatles- Like picking between my children. Can't do it although I have contended that Revolver is their best album. Pearl Jam- I absolutely love Yield. All the way through. Stevie Wonder- Innervisions Queen- The Game. Excellent album David Bowie- Hunky Dory "..with a couple of kooks hung up on romancing" John Lennon- Plastic Ono Album. stripped-down bare, honest, harsh. Masterpiece. "Mother don't GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Daddy come home" The Who- Who's Next The Rolling Stones- Beggar's Baquet. Probably the best rock n' roll album ever! Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted May 16, 2002 I'm going to be the evil Pumpkins advocate. I think Adore is their best album. Why? I couldn't tell you on a technical level, really. The closest approximation I can get is that taking the focus off of the layered and dominant guitars puts the focus back on the songs themselves, and on Billy Corgan putting himself out on the table, most purely emotionally, without the over-construction of Mellon Collie's pretensions and Siamese Dream's walls of sound. "To Sheila" is, simply put, the most beautiful piece they ever recorded. That said, my opinion on the Pumpkins changes every few months. Adore is without a doubt my favorite of the albums, but "best" rotates depending on the mood. I'll mix it up with a new Radiohead order, too. The Bends > OK Computer > Kid A > Pablo Honey > Amnesiac Why? The Bends rocks, plain and simple, start to finish, unreserved, and I've also thought that OK Computer suffered a big, big break in flow at "Fitter/Happier." Minor quibble, but for me, the placement of that track disrupts the songwriting on the album too much. Would have tied it in earlier, perhaps attached it to "Paranoid Android" somehow. In my opinion, the best songs on that album all come before "Fitter" anyway. Amnesiac, while admirable, gets the bottom spot because it flows in no way at all, and features perhaps two of Radiohead's dullest missteps, "Push/Pulk Revolving Doors" and "Knives Out." It does get points for "I Might Be Wrong" and "Like Spinning Plates," but in both cases the stuff on the I Might Be Wrong live EP is far superior. I'd slot that in between OK and Kid A if we're counting EPs. I agree with a lot of the other statements on this thread, so I'll throw out a new one: Check Your Head is the best Beasties album, bar none. Their most versatile, with many of their best rhymes, but most importantly, a total control and freshness from the introduction of live instrumentation, and really no filler on the whole album. I'll also say that Boys for Pele is Tori Amos' best album, but I don't get the impression that many people here are big Tori fans anyhoo. Go masculinity! Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted May 16, 2002 Fuck, Paul's Boutique is so far ahead of every Beasties album ever made. Way before it's time and truly revolutionary. While Check Your Head will fade from people's memories within the next ten years, Paul's Boutique will be talked about as one of the greatest albums EVER! Guest Anorak Report post Posted May 16, 2002 REM: 'Automatic for the People' is my favourite, one of the first albums i got into and just a classic from start to finish. 'Murmur' may have been more influential but Automatic is just more anthemic in its breadth and execution. Replacements: Got to go with 'Tim' here, even though i have a soft spot for 'Let it Be'. Less filler than other Replacements albums and the best contrast between their reckless and earnest nature. Low: 'Things we lost in the fire' is their best, everything before 'Curtain hits the Cast' was sometimes too lo-fi and whispery for its own good. Sonic Youth: 'Daydream Nation'. On this album they never fall into an unlistenable mess or wander down aimless tunnels of noise, everything has a focus and there always seems a shimmering guitar line hidng somewhere, however densley buried. Some songs are also catchier and poppier than some of their other stuff as well. Its definately ahead of 'Sister' or 'Washing Machine'. Weezer: I'll go with the first album here, i don't think all of 'Pinkerton' worked and i find it a frustrating listen whereas the first record is just addictive and doesn't wallow in its own cleverness. Afghan Whigs: Most people tend to say 'Gentlemen' but i think 'Congregation' has it licked comfortably. The albums sound is very distinctive and the music flows like its meant to wheras later albums such as 'Black Love' sounded stiffer as the band became almost a parody of themselves. Their was never really an adequate label for the Whigs (soul grunge some dubbed them) and 'Congregation' was one of the more overlooked albums of the early nineties. Pixies: 'Doolittle' is my favourite of theirs, i just love about every song on it. I'm probably about the only person who likes 'Bossonova' as much as 'Surfer Rosa' as well but 'Dooloittle' beats both. Jimi Hendrix: I skip the odd track on both 'Axis' and 'Ladyland' so 'Are you Experienced' gets the nod here, his best collection of songs. Aerosmith: Anyone who wants to know how good they used to be back in the day should just pick up 'Rocks'. I like it more than many of the more critically revered rock albums of the 70's and showed how good the drugs were for them for a time. 'Draw the Line' was a lesson in having too many drugs shortly after and things were never as good again. Monster Magnet: I don't know how far they may have fallen since 'Powertrip' back in 98 but for me they were pretty much the perfect rock band for a time. 'Spine of God' is just a brilliant album, totally enjoyable, heavy, self-mockingly funny, cynical, outrageous and as doped up as possible. What seperated them from countless other bands was that they were both a metal/stoner band and a true rock'n'roll band, they often sounded as much like the MC5 or the Stooges as Sabbath and 'Spine of God' combines all the elements into a great album. Guest Report post Posted May 16, 2002 Metallica - Master of Puppets though ...And Justice For All is very close to it. Jeff Buckley - Hard to pick but Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk is more raw and powerful to me. Anything by him is good though. Worth checking out for definite. Tool - Aenema but the others are just as good. Just personal preference right now. Bush - Golden State is right now my favourite. Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire. Just spews out amazing work and is by far the best album they've had in their history.
