Low ratings, what would you do to fix it?

Recommended Posts

Guest

You may say this should be in fantasy booking, but with the low ratings that the wwe is currently experience, I'm more looking for your ideas to save it.

What would you do given the power?

My Roster choices.

1. (World Title Holder) R.V.D.

Popular, innovative move set (for wwf standards), athletic.

He would be the man I would put the title around for the moment.

2. (Number 1 Contenders) Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho

All Three can work a decent match. Ideally I would want to move Steve Austin out of this list if he couldn't keep up, but at the moment that would be what I would work for.

3. (Intercontinental Champion) Spike Dudley

Now it's somewhat obvious I have an ECW bias, but you know at some point, you have to break out the Spike on a winning streak. It has to happen, and will assure an intresting storyline for at least 3 months.

4. (Intercontinental Contenders) Deam Malenko, Tazz, Chris Benoit, Al Snow

5. (Tag Team Champions) Raven and Steven Richards

6. (Tag Team Contenders) Dudley's, Kane and Undertaker, Hardyz, Edge and Christian.

Yes, My tag team choices are a little weak. This is why I need other bookers. I accept that I don't have a good grasp on who should revive the tag titles. Please respond with something better.

7. (Cruiserweight Champion) Tajiri

8. (Cruiserweight Contenders) Eddie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero, Billy Kidman, and insert anyone else who is quick, and willing to join my roster without going into fits while on X. Juvi... Kai, and Tai.

9. (No more Hardcore title, unless you're willing to induce serious ECW flashbacks. U.S. Title Champion) Hugh Morris

10. (U.S. Title Contender) Throw in everyone I haven't used to battle for this title while Hugh Morris destroys them.

(People I cut.) Hardcore Holly, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Golddust, Booker T, APA, Mark Henry, Big Show unless you can find a way to regain his NWO luster.

I may have missed several people. I am one of the many people who have quit watching because it's trite crap, with Vince spending most of his time making me ashamed I enjoy wrestling.

Hogan needs to have his retirement match at the PPV after the one this sunday. Although he may get great receptions from nostalgic live crowds he doesn't appeal to the younger viewers(The prime demo), rating sink when he is on and the sooner he is gone and young guys like Booker T and Edge are given main-event pushes to see if they belong, WWE will suffer in the ratings.

I would have Booker T turn on the NWO and be a face, let the cruisers have more match time, bring up the Prototype who has it all to be a franchise, moreso than Lesnar, Bautista, Orton, etc. Stop all the stupid handicapped matches that make for no drama and are only frustrating to the viewer.

I would only use four titles.

Heavyweight

Light Heavyweight

Tag Team

I would only have several PPVs: Survivor Series, Summerslam, Royal Rumble, and Wrestlemania.

I wouldn't use any wrestlers over fourty.

I would stop making finishers "magic bullets", they would be referred to as a wrestler's signature move.

I would fire any bad workers.

I would axe the split.

I would strip everyone of their titles and have tournaments.

I would let wrestlers choose their own gimmicks.

I would have all of the willing women in the WWFE pose for Playboy, each in a differant issue.

I would change the company name to WWFE.

I would depush the "hosses", save the talented ones.

I would fire Michael Cole.

I would fire the current booking team, including Steph.

ALL wrestling moves would hurt and be believable.

I would use a stiffer shoot style.

I would hire Joey Styles, Don "Cyrus" Callis, and Mike "The Professor" Tenay.

I would fire Terri.

I would hire Francine to take Terri's interviewer spot, but not to wrestle.  She has some injuries.

I would revamp the whole organization.  Bring back simplicity.  Push the people who know how to work.  Create new stars.  Make the company "1 brand" again.

I would do the "Old" v "Young" angle for real with Undertaker, HHH, Austin, Rock, and Hogan (the WWF Attitude Generation) v Benoit, Jericho, Angle, RVD, Guerrero (the new era).  It will be a very simple feud, laid out in the Jumbo and Co v Misawa and Co style of AJPW in the early 1990's.

Lots of 8 man, 6man, tag matches leading up to the big singles matches on PPV.  A very simple 3 month feud to get the new talent over.

PPV 1

HHH © v Jericho (World Title)

Rock/Austin © v Benoit/Angle (Tag Titles)

Eddy Guerrero/RVD v Undertaker/Hogan (Grudge Match)

The point of these matches would be to have no interference.  Whoever wins, wins cleanly.  The creditability of everyone is brought forth by the actual moves being kicked out of, etc.

Mike Tenne and Jim Ross will be the announcers to put everything over.

The feud will end in a blow off with the Young Guys getting the final revenge over the older guys.

HHH, Taker, Hoga, move down into smaller roles or are just phased out while Rock and Austin continue to elevate while helping the new talent keep drawing.

The undercard pushes the cruiserweights and mid carders, with different mid carders being elevated each month.

The PPV rotation of 12 would rotate.

Royal Rumble

WM

KOTR

Summerslam

Survivor Series

are all the PPV's with the huge singles matches.

The other PPV's will be used for gimmick matches, pushing new talent for title shots, etc.

Tim

Wow, what a mess.  That would be a step back for the IC division.  Spike isn't a believable champ for any belt other than Hardcore, and you're making him IC?  The 2nd highest belt in the fed?  Dean's retired, Tazz is hardly an active wrestler at this point, Al Snow shouldn't be that high on the card, and Benoit is *way* beyond feuding w/ Spike, Tazz, & Snow.

And you're cutting Booker?  Why?  He should be *in* your IC division, if not the champ.

My IC division would consist of Booker, Kanyon, Mike Awesome, Eddie, Rhyno, Christian, and a few others I'm forgetting right now.

And throw Hurricane in the Cruiser division.

young guys like Booker T

Isn't Booker like 39?  I think he's older than Austin.

After checking imdb.com, Booker just turned 37 (5/1/65).  Making him about 5 months younger than Austin (12/18/64).

Personally, as far as the first post in this thread is concerned, I'd never make RVD the Unified Champion until he could do more then act like a stoner(yeah, it's his character, but who the hell would buy him as a World champion when he can't really express anything more than "Whatever, dude"?). RVD works as a contender right and I wouldn't move him up to main eventer status until he at least learned how express more than one emotion. I'm not saying he should be Mr. Intensity like HHH, just act different every once in a while, y'know? Get angry, get pissed off, just do SOMETHING other than "Whatever, dude".

1. (World Title Holder) R.V.D.

Popular, innovative move set (for wwf standards), athletic.

Unable to work a match all that well. Relies too much on spots. Can't cut a promo to save his life. Give the strap to Angle, Jericho, or Austin.

<<<2. (Number 1 Contenders) Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho

All Three can work a decent match. Ideally I would want to move Steve Austin out of this list if he couldn't keep up, but at the moment that would be what I would work for.>>>

Austin can work with just about anybody. He's the best for a reason. Throw in Benoit and you have a good ME roster. I suppose HHH has to be here, also.

<<<3. (Intercontinental Champion) Spike Dudley

Now it's somewhat obvious I have an ECW bias, but you know at some point, you have to break out the Spike on a winning streak. It has to happen, and will assure an intresting storyline for at least 3 months.>>>

You need to get over this ECW bias. There is a reason they never played to a big arena---their product was a niche product.

And Dudley is a terrible champ. God awfully bad. He can bump well and that is it. He's Jeff Hardy without the ridiculous hair. Let Eddy keep it.

<<<4. (Intercontinental Contenders) Deam Malenko, Tazz, Chris Benoit, Al Snow>>>

Let's just write off the belt here and now? Malenko? TAZZ?!?!?! Shouldn't we reward people for not sucking up the joint consistently?

Keep Edge, Christian, Kanyon, and Lance Storm here. Keep the I-C Title as the "workrate" title.

<<<5. (Tag Team Champions) Raven and Steven Richards>>>

Ix-nay with the ECW stuff. I say re-form Three-Count with Helms & Moore and let them run.

<<<6. (Tag Team Contenders) Dudley's, Kane and Undertaker, Hardyz, Edge and Christian. >>>

Well, since I doubt the WWE wants to reform these teams, there is a need to make new teams. Bring up some developmental talent and team them. I imagine when they fully heal up, we'll see the Island Boys here.

<<<Yes, My tag team choices are a little weak. This is why I need other bookers. I accept that I don't have a good grasp on who should revive the tag titles. Please respond with something better.

7. (Cruiserweight Champion) Tajiri>>>

Tajiri is a solid choice. The rare CW worker with an offense that looks like it'd work on a heavyweight.

<<<8. (Cruiserweight Contenders) Eddie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero, Billy Kidman, and insert anyone else who is quick, and willing to join my roster without going into fits while on X. Juvi... Kai, and Tai.>>>

No Guerrero. But the rest are top notch choices. Also throw in Jamie Knoble. And, heck, re-sign Elix Skipper and stick him in there.

<<<9. (No more Hardcore title, unless you're willing to induce serious ECW flashbacks. U.S. Title Champion) Hugh Morris>>>

Hardcore wrestling sucks. Making it comedy is the only way to make it less sufferable. ECW flashbacks aren't that good a thing.

Dont cut Booker or Holly (who isn't too bad)---but the rest absolutely let 'em go. I'm also dump Waltman while I'm am it.

For the guy who dissed my IC choices, I personally beileve they are perfect aside from the fact that Dean is retired.

What is the IC belt anyway? A gateway to the wwf belt? A belt for the lower tier to hold, and fight over?

Taz, Spike, Dean, Benoit, Hell, add in any other short, wrestler that can wrestle.

You said that Benoit is "Too good" to wrestle the likes of them.

Why? No one is too good.. I'd give Dean a long match, clean win on Benoit with the Texas Cloverleaf, and guess what. Dean is good enough.

All you have to do is to show it.

Right now, If R.V.D. cleanly pinned the Rock, hit his finisher, and cleanly pinned after kickout out of the rock bottom.

The fans would beileve he was better than the Rock, thus a lot of the Rock's fame, and handing it to R.V.D.

The biggest problem with wrestling is when they stopped giving clean wins to hand away buzz.

If Rock really is leaving, they should feud him with R.V.D., and have him completely own him.

When you run the WWE, you create the wrestlers, they don't create themselves.

I'm not going to list all of the appropriate title holders, because that bores me.

However, I think the main thing WWE needs is consistency. The shows recently have been rather hit and miss, so that needs to be rectified. Say it with me children...CONSISTENCY!!

IC Title is 1 step below the World Title.  The 2nd most prestigious title in the fed (supposedly).  And as such, Spike, Tazz, and Al Snow should be nowhere near it.  That's just the way it is.  They're merely low-card wrestlers.

You said that Benoit is "Too good" to wrestle the likes of them.

Benoit is too established as an upper-card guy at this point in his career to be feuding w/ guys like Spike & Al Snow.  By your reasoning, it would be perfectly OK to feud Rock or HHH or Hogan w/ Spike or Al Snow.  That's just ridiculous.

Spike is Hardcore Title level at best, maybe Euro, and maybe Tag on a rare occasion, but no higher on the card.  Same w/ Al Snow.  Same w/ Tazz.  Nobody will buy those guys as a step below the World Title.

And I personally feel they're horribly flawed. Such is disagreement. Sticking Benoit with the IC Title and guys like Snow is burying him.

<<<What is the IC belt anyway? A gateway to the wwf belt? A belt for the lower tier to hold, and fight over?>>>

It WAS the workrate belt. The belt that had good matches attached to it.

<<<Taz, Spike, Dean, Benoit, Hell, add in any other short, wrestler that can wrestle.>>>

Tazz CAN'T work. Nor can Spike.

<<<You said that Benoit is "Too good" to wrestle the likes of them.>>>

That is EXACTLY what I'm saying.

<<<Why? No one is too good.. I'd give Dean a long match, clean win on Benoit with the Texas Cloverleaf, and guess what. Dean is good enough.>>>

And Benoit is buried. So, Benoit loses his heat and the heat vacuum that is Malenko gets no huge benefit out of it.

<<<All you have to do is to show it.

Rock has the charisma that RVD doesn't. Rock has the mic skills that RVD doesn't.

And, unlike Rob, Rock has worked 4 star matches in his life.

Why not have Rock put over somebody who is, you know, good?

Let Benoit own him. Let Guerrero own him. Let Booker own him. Heck, let Kanyon own him.

Show clipshows for the next three weeks, and hype up the return of the WWE.  It'd allow for a total rehabilitation.  Writers could take a vacation, wrestlers too.  Come back after the first week, and plan out the return and write stories for each individual player of the feder..uh, Entertainment.  ;)

Ok, I'm probably the biggest Tazz mark on the board and even I wouldn't push him towards the I-C title right now. The belt is supposed to be a gateway to the WWF title, which is why you should want to have someone hold the title who is at least over with the fans. Right now when fans look at Tazz, they don't see the Human Suplex Machine from ECW. They see the guy who got squashed by Jericho in 5 seconds. The guy who got owned by an announcer. The guy who got embarrassed time after time by Steve Austin, and right now, he's almost universally viewed as nothing more than a bad announcer. If you're going to do something to increase the value of the title, Tazz shouldn't even be allowed to look at the belt at this point.

Same with Spike. If you want something for him to do, stick him with the Hardcores and the Cruisers, because all the novelty he had from the Molly angle has worn off. Right now, I think the I-C Title is perfect with RVD and Eddie feuding for it, just that the writers need to put a little more emphasis on that feud to get us to pay attention to the belt. Eddie's a good enough heel and RVD's popular enough to make the feud notable.

As for RVD with the Undisputed title...no. WWF has to do more than just throw him on TV and let him point at himself before they can expect to get any World Title worthy heat on him. If they ever wanna get him to that point, I think the best way to do it is to let him be the egotistical heel he was back in ECW in 96-97. Have him come out and annoy the crowd but then have him win every match so people will pay to see him lose.

As for what the WWF can do to raise ratings...well just improve the quality of the show. And by doing this, I don't mean bring in people like Savage, Steiner and Goldberg. The WWF roster is big enough as it is. Let them figure out how to work with the wrestlers they've got before they start thinking about new ones. I agree with those guys who say people should be allowed to work with their own characters (although judging from my experiences running e-feds that has the potential to get kinda problematic), and they should be allowed to develop their characters THROUGH MATCHES and not stupid skits. It's nice to have some comedy guys every now and then, but ultimately it's what goes on in the ring that determines how successful a wrestler is, entertainment or not. Basically, right now I think the WWF would be a lot better off building long term characters instead of short term ones like the wrestling superhero whose novelty wears off about a month into the angle.

I think I've just come to accept the fact that it really doesn't matter what the WWE does anymore whether creative or uncreative, the ratings just won't increase to the levels they wish they would. It doesn't matter who you push or what storylines are the most riveting...

Wrestling's always been sort of a fad. It's popular, and then it's not popular... it's popular, then it's not... you get the picture. Sure I think something needs to be done... I think the entire creative team should be overhauled. But I think they just need to stop living and dying by the ratings and just focus on how to make the product better. Cut some costs, scale down the roster to include those who draw and can work, and then just sail the ship steady. Someday the true next big thing will come along, and wrestling's popularity will rise again. I just think they need to stop rushing into it or forcing it, and just be patient and allow it to just... happen.

Of course in a business world, what I just mentioned could be considered insane, but I think it's the best way to go about things.

Well i won't get into storylines since i have no idea what kind of main storyline WWeee needs to "reinvent itself". Also i'm going to keep the belts as is since WWeee has a big enough roster for all of the belts. However i would rename the Euro and Hardcore belts.

"the oldies": Can't just up and fire all of them. So would have to phase them out with some sort of respect.

Hogan: Does a retirement tour and is gone within 6 months

Austin: Stays in main event for a year or two and is asked to retire while he's still near the top. If he doesn't want to retire at that point then he wil be moved down to IC(perhaps a main event fued here and there but if he stays past 2 or 3 years he's moved down to IC.

Undertaker: Stays in IC for a year or two before being asked to retire. He'd help get younger IC level guys over. Before he retires perhaps let him have one last main event fued.

World Champ: Kurt Angle(he deserves it the most)

contenders: Jericho, HHH(don't like him but he's earned the right to be a main eventer), Beniot, Austin, Rock(if he's still around)

I didn't include guys like RVD and Booker T on the world champ level because they still need to be built up in the mid card before they should move up.

IC Champ: RVD

contenders: Eddy Guerrero, Booker T, Edge, Undertaker, Rhyno, Kane(not a big fan but he'd not bad for his size), Brock Lesnar

Tag Champs: Billy & Chuck(no matter what anyone says with the addition of Rico they became a real heel team that has lasting power)

Contenders: Dudley Boys, Hardy Boys, APA, Island Boys, Saturn & Tazz, Mark Jindrak & Prototype(rename him)

tag division needs a whole seperate topic to talk about how to save it. I could've gave it more thought and came up with more team but I just gave the few teams that stood out at me.

US Champ(renamed Euro): Christian(without the tantrums)

contenders: Lance Storm, Val Venis(possible repackaging), Randy Orton, Test, Dlo Brown, Shelton Benjamin, Sean O'Haire, Ron Waterman, Nova, Mike Awesome, Kanyon, Mike Sanders

Cruiserweight Champ: Tajiri

contenders: Billy Kidman, Shane Helms, Chavo Guerrero Jr., Rey Misterio

I only gave the top guys. I don't want to type everyone. Just put anyone who can keep up a quick pace in the division.

Hardcore* Champ: Raven

contenders: Al Snow, Justin Credible, Spike Dudley, Tommy Dreamer, Deacon Bautista, Hardcore Holly, Hugh Morrus, Bull Buchanan, Crash,

I'd rename the belt but i'm not sure what i'd change it to. I'd also refine what the purpose of the belt. Make it more of a no dq anything goes type of belt that doesn't force the match to be "hardcore".

I'm sure i missed some guys that are either hurt or in HWA. I could only find a roster for OVW so i'm sure i'm missing some guys who are in HWA. I also only went by who is currently in the WWF system. I'm not all that familiar with the Indy wrestlers so i just didn't include them as guys i'd hire.

If I fixed the WWF ratings I would do the following:

1.Turn the clock back

It's time that Vince brought back family friendly wrestling. I mean, this attutude era is crap.

2.Fire all the divas and get rid of the WWE Women's Title

I'm sick of divas. Wrestling fans go to wrestling shows to see wrestling. Not big boobed retards

3.Bring back bad gimmicks

I wish all the bad gimmicks came back. I'd love to see Justin Credible go back to his "Man-O-War" Aldo Montoya gimmick. Or have Rikishi lose some weight and bring back "Makin' A Difference" Fatu. Now that would be cool. Or Vince could have Kevin Nash come back as Oz or Vinnie Vegas

4.Fire Jerry Lawer

I'm sick of him yelling "puppies!" every night. He's been wrestling since the 70s and doesn't deserve to be in the WWE.

That's what I'd do to improve the WWE.

Kind Of Simple Way to boost the ratings...

Bring Back the rock, put the title on him but quick...

Re-Elevate Austin but good, get him in the top 6 ME positions

again, It's not that Jericho is being de-pushed, it's that there are too many main eventers... You need about 5, but once you get to about 10, the main event starts to buckle under it's own weight...

Anyways, Build These fueds up over the summer...

The Rock VS Chris Jericho (I don't know why, but I can't get enough of these two)

Steve Austin VS HHH (Give HHH an opponent to work, that can help him find himself)

Chris Benoit VS The Undertaker

Kurt Angle VS Hulk Hogan

(Taker and Hogan can erase years of alleged "Holding people down, by putting these two over huge) , Have Benoit break Undertakers arm, thus allowing Taker one last run as a huge babyface after an 8-week vacation...

-Put the title on Jericho and make HHH number one contender.

-Move Angle to Raw (trade for Brock) to become Flair's benefactor, kill the nWo and X-Pac. Use Big Show and two others as Angle's enforcers.

-Raw's Top Faces: Austin, RVD, Booker T

-Raw's Top Heels: Angle, Eddie, Taker

-SD!'s Top Faces: HHH, Benoit, Edge

-SD!'s Top Heels: Jericho, Christian (w/ buildup), Brock

-Main Eventers: Jericho, Triple H, Benoit, Angle, Austin

-Use the name WWE sparingly, change each show to a company (Raw Championship Wrestling, Smackdown Wrestling Federation).  One writing crew for each show.

-RCW Titles:  Undisputed, Women's, Tag Team (make it applicable to both shows), IC, Hardcore

-SWF Titles: Undisputed, Women's, Tag Team, U.S. (renamed from euro), Cruiserweight

-Longer matches, longer feuds (no less than three PPVs for each story arc)

-Simplify story lines, let wrestling and backstory speak for itself... don't overthink the writing.

-ATTENTION TO DETAIL!!!

...story ideas to come...
