3.5 GPA this last semester - probably would have pulled the 4.0, but my Computer Science professors did have that lofty reputation as cock-sucking bastards to hold up.

Aw yeah, testify my fellow CS majors!

The only course I took this semester was Computer Architecture II. I don't know how I did yet, but I'm glad it's over. It wasn't hard, it's just that I didn't find designing circuits very interesting. Hopefully, I'll go back to programming stuff next semester.

i have 2 admit, my A in java was really suprising, my teacher was perhaps the shittiest teacher i've ever had.  he would give us these stupid assignments that had nothing 2 do w/ the class, and then he'd bitch about wasting time when he could have easily not given us those assignments and taught us more in java

I remember in high school I got kicked out of my Washington State history class because I told the teacher I didn't want to sit here and listen to Native Americans blame me for everything that was wrong.  He asked me how I could possibly think what we did was right and I told him that just because we had better weapons and won doesn't mean its wrong and that its only an issue because we were different races... he told me I was wrong... I told him to fuck off.  Oh the good old days.

You may tell me to fuck off but you're wrong. Native Americans were never defeated militarily by any Euro conqueror. They may have lost battles but actually most died by disease.

Its not the how and the why did they die that I had an issue with it was the course was pretty much "Europeans came and murdered everyone".  I think anyone with half a brain realizes thats not the truth and I understand the diseases and such.  It was mostly the way the class was presented.  Its like slavery... do I think it was wrong?  Yes.  Would I be ashamed if my family owned slaves? No, because it was normal back then.   Everyone forgets that if you grow up in an enviroment where certain things are shown to be normal you may think slavery was normal too... besides the fact that Africans where slave owners in Africa as well.

OK, first of all, just for clarification, the slavery in Africa was not based on race like it was America (not saying it was right, just the way it was).

To accept something as normal doesn't make it right. To place faith in values such as equality, freedom, blah blah blah, whatever other rhetoric the forefethers were spewing, then to turn around and treat another human as an animal is hypocritical. Normal or not.

"It was mostly the way the class was presented."

I don't know how the class was presented.

"Its not the how and the why did they die that I had an issue with it was the course was pretty much "Europeans came and murdered everyone".  I think anyone with half a brain realizes thats not the truth and I understand the diseases and such."

It's not so much that the Europeans came and MURDERED everyone but they did come to this continent feeling superior in every way possible. Labeling the Indians as savages, heathens, uncivilized, whatever. And to impose their cultural values and norms on unsuspecting tribes, to reneg on treaties, and to enslave thousands upon thousands isn't a bias, it's a fact. While you may have little compassion for the plight of indigenous groups, the wrongful actions of any group should never just be accepted.

I don't think it was right to enslave or anything like that... but the truth of the matter is that this type of thing is NORMAL throughout history as many races/countries had some sort of slave labor.  Anybody who conquers/settles (depending on perspective) tries to spread their ideals etc, be it Christian religion or the Western guide to housekeeping.

The Romans did it, Spanish etc.

Germany went back on treaties with Russia ... does that make it just as bad as Europeans and Indians? I think so because I view the world without race, and I think if its evil to do it to a black man then it should be equally as evil to do it to a white man or a brown man, yet people look at it as more a black/white thing and seem to apologize more when it is like that.  And its bullshit.

Again do I think it was wrong? Yes, but I understand that this was what was done in those days so I will not sit there and say I am sorry.

My family came to American in the 1700's and lived in the Northeast and the South so people in my family probably had slaves etc and I don't feel sorry because I know if I were growing up in that enviroment I would probably think that owning a slave was normal. ( As I believe most people would.)

My point is basically summed up like this... a lot of people look at it differently if its African vs African conquest or England vs France compared to when its European vs African because of race... like it is somehow more wrong to do the exact same thing to another race as you did to your own.

" Labeling the Indians as savages, heathens, uncivilized, whatever. What about Euro countries conquering others and referring to them as barbarians and such?  You don't see them apologizing to one another.  Indians are not better than Europeans or Africans.

(Note... I have a strong hatred for racist people or bigots.. but I also hate Politically Correct people, feminists, affirmative action, and any other bullshit that tries to make one feel better or get one up on someone else because of race, sex or creed.)

"What about Euro countries conquering others and referring to them as barbarians and such?  You don't see them apologizing to one another."

Actually, they did and they do. But it's not called apologies. It's through restoration of land and other acts and treaties in an attempt to return land to chosen groups.

"I think so because I view the world without race, and I think if its evil to do it to a black man then it should be equally as evil to do it to a white man or a brown man, yet people look at it as more a black/white thing and seem to apologize more when it is like that.  And its bullshit."

Actually, it's not bullshit. Africans did not arrive on European shores in an attempt to colonize. Africans did not enslave the white man. White people made it a black/white thing when justifying their actions through race and "rationality through science", social darwinism, etc.

"I have a strong hatred for racist people or bigots.. "

Good.

"but I also hate Politically Correct people, feminists, affirmative action, and any other bullshit that tries to make one feel better or get one up on someone else because of race, sex or creed"

Do you understand the reasons these groups and laws are formed in the first place? Because of racist, sexist actions taken by the dominant culture imposed forcefully on minority groups. And don't lump all feminists in one. Any historian or sociologist willl tell you that feminism is as multi-layered or diverse as religion.

As for race, how far removed from lynchings, Jim Crow laws, segregation are we? If people allowed for something such as cultural pluralism or qualified applicants were accepted based on performance and not race, there would be no need for a law like affirmative action. Unfortunately,  it has been proven (and Christ I wish I had the court cases to show you) that employers have disqualified blacks, Latinos, women or whatever from getting a job because of the employer's  prejudicial attitudes and not on the qualifications of the applicant. Don't blame the victim, blame the culprit.

"Again do I think it was wrong? Yes, but I understand that this was what was done in those days so I will not sit there and say I am sorry. "

No one is asking you to say you are sorry.

And getting back to the original topic, how did you do this semester? Are you still in school, never went to school, or have you graduated already?

I am actually out currently.  I am going back when I get all the information from AT&T about reimbursement for tuition.

As for the feminists etc.  Not all I would agree... but more of NOW, Ms Magazine etc.

As for affirmative action... do I think that its wrong to discriminate because its a woman or the guy is black?  Yes.  I would hope a business would hire someone who is most qualified.  Do I want the government telling me who to hire? Hell no.  If I want all my employess to be blond with big boobs and a 8th grade intelligence than I should be able too.  Its MY business.. not a black man's, a woman's or anyone elses... MINE.  So that makes i my decision.

[Robocop mode ON] Fuck You. [/Robocop]

I dropped out of college in Dec 2000.  I was a CS major, but I hated the school I was in and tons of other shit, so I came home.  Due to financial difficulty and a large ass debt, I haven't gone back yet, but I plan on it.

I used to live 2 blocks away from FU.  I moved a few years back, but I'm still like 15 minutes away from it.

ARLT-100 Arts and Letters= A-

-Well-deserved... hard ass final.

AHIS-364 Myths, Arts, Realities: Visual Culture in California, 1849 to the Present= B+

-Or as I liked to call it: Guilty White Religious Male 101, my "diversity" requirement.  I wasn't into all the liberal bullshit, but I still found the course interesting.

That gave me a 3.5 for this semester; 3.43 for the year. Woohoo!!  Yes, I do want a cookie...and a medal.

i also got a 4.0 this semester.  i didn't think i'd get it, cause...i did good on finals, but not really 'A quality' on them.  but then again i'm an overachiever who goes to class everyday and participates in discussion, so my participation grades probably nudged my average up.

incidentally, what's everybody (well, everybody in college) taking next semester?  i'm taking creative writing, french cinema, & three philosophies.  it's only 13 hours, not even a full workload, but i dread all the papers i'm going to have to write.

What college are you going to where 13 hours isn't considered full-time?  12 is the minimum at every place I've been.
