So what were the best new shows of the years

Recommended Posts

Guest Youth N Asia

Whether it was full season or just mid season...the Shield kicked ass over anything else new in years.

And it's not a sitcom or drama or anything...but Travel Sick on Comedy Central is pretty good.

I liked Undeclarded...but it ran against Buffy, so I didn't see too much.

'Undeclared'... was a cool show. Dunno what happened to it though.

'24' is definitely one of my new favorites as well.

Not sure if it falls under "the year" category, but 'Grounded for Life' is another one I really like.

24 is the best show I've ever seen....PERIOD.

Andy Richter Controls The Universe was GREAT.  Smallville took the Superman story to a whole new level as well.

Andy Richter is good, probably my fave new show of the season. Is it on Fox's fall schedule?

Smallville is horrible. I liked it at first, then realized that EVERY fucking episode revolved around some kid obtaining "meteor shower"-spawned super powers. Clark is played by an actor with ZERO charisma, plus he's an annoying character to boot. It took him this long to realize that Chloe has the hots for him? What a tool. Lex and the various eye candy (the 2 chicks and the mom, who incidentally played Lana in Superman III) are the only reasons for me to watch this. Well, that and the fact that, like The Practice, it's a fun show to mock. Hopefully, season 2 will be less of a waste of time & electricity.

Man, I can't believe I wasted my 1000th post talking about Smallville :P

I'll throw a couple more votes to "24" and "Andy Richter".

Hm, from the sounds of things, I should have been watching 24 instead of Smallville.

I was a bit worried when I looked in this morning's paper and didn't see Andy Richter Controls the Universe on Fox's fall schedule, but according to Zap2It, it'll return in midseason. It has decent writing and good actors, so I'm hoping it'll continue to pick up viewers. It's also good to see a Grosse Pointe alumnus in another good show.

Undeclared - easily. Figures that it will find the fate of the last good show on TV - Freaks and Geeks!

The Shield is a good show and better then any other cop show for years. Sure NYPD isn't a terrible show but it just doesn't have the edge like The Shield. The Shield is like watching a cop show that's on HBO and i can't believe how much they get away with on basic cable.

24 was another very good show. It has a great concept and the  execution is excellent as well. It's coming back next year so i'm interested in seeing how they make a new season out of it. Wrether they will continue the current story or start a new story with new characters. Also i'm interested in seeing if the excellent writing can continue. Also i didn't start watching this show until like the 10 hour, but i'm glad that i finally did start.

Andy Richtor wasn't bad at all and showed alot of promise. Good writing is always a good thing for a show and this has it.

Grounded for Life is on it's second season.

Never watched Smallsville.

I didn't much care for Undeclared.

No other new shows stood out at me so i may be forgetting something. But i feel safe in calling 24 and The Shield the best new shows.

I love Smallville.  It took the whole Superman idea and took it to a new level, it's a great thriller.  Having Lex as a good friend of Clark is GOLD.  Plus, it's not really a super-hero show, it has a hero with powers, but no costumes.  Very realistic and well written show.

Why did you put down Freaks and Geeks? It was cancelled two years ago and wasn't a new show this year.

The Lex/Clark relationship is good, but "great thriller"? I don't find it too thrilling when every single episode ends the EXACT SAME WAY. You can practically write your own Smallville third act, Mad Libs style:

The bad guy/girl has Lana/Chloe/Mrs. Kent trapped in a graveyard/deserted field/hidden lair. Before the evildoer can finish her off, Clark runs in at super-speed, yells "Lana!"/"Chloe!"/"Mom!" and uses his X-Ray vision to find her at the last second. Clark saves her and briefly spars with the evil teen/teacher/rogue cop, but the bad guy finds that his/her powers/weapons don't work on Clark. Clark punches the bad guy out and saves the day.

Smallville (although it does get repetitive, it's still my favorite show right now.  Undeclared, which i really liked but is apparently cancelled now.

Now i'm not saying that the Osbournes and Bernie Mac are bad shows, in fact i watch and like both. However neither show is that creative.

Why do you make fun of Practice? That's a good show.

I heard it was canceled from the actor who plays Hal but the man who writes it says they are working on a second season. It is not on the scheudle but neither is Andy and that is a middle-season replacment. Does anyone know what happeened for sure?

Why do I diss The Practice? Ah, various reasons. I go into it a little bit here, where I talk about how they're recycling storylines. I used to like the show a lot, but it's gotten so repetitive. "Oh, he's guilty! But we have to represent him! What a dilemma!" Also, every episode has to have some kind of *twist* ending, along the lines of "he's so obviously guilty, but at the last minute it's revealed that he isn't, but he gets convicted anyway", or "he's obviously not guilty, but at the last minute it's revealed that he is, but he gets acquitted", or "she's insane, and she gets acquitted, but then she kills again!". Stuff like that. And when every practically every episode ends in a twist ending, you start to expect it, and so you start running through the various possible scenarios in your head, so when the verdict finally comes in (you know it's coming when they start to play the cheesy "dramatic" music), it's no longer that surprising.

Also, none of the characters are especially likeable. In fact, most of them are annoying jerks. Jimmy is a holier-than-thou moron, Eugene is an asshole, Elinor is a bitch, Rebecca is whiny, etc.. The acting is OK, but when you're rooting for the serial killer stalker instead of the show's "heroes", that's not a good sign. And it seems like they've dropped those ongoing subplots about their personal lives, too. Subplots are really what make you keep coming back...maybe I'd actually care about the characters if they did that.

And don't get me started on the lame "shock value" stories (A psycho who thinks he's Hannibal Lecter, someone who gets sexually aroused when hot chicks step on bugs, etc).

The older episodes were good, when it was still kind of original. Now I watch just to see what lame storyline DEK has for me this week.

I enjoyed the:

That 80's Show

And that's about it.  I hate Smallville and anything else on the WB.  When I watch TV I am mostly watching shows that have been around a bit or re-runs of Married With Children which is in my mind one of the greatest sitcoms behind Seinfeld and All In The Family.

I wish Dragnet was on.

I guess you must be heartbroken that That 80s Show just got cancelled. It's too bad that it was so sub-par, especially compared to That 70s Show.  I kept hoping it would get better, but...it never did. The writing sucked. Eddie Shin & Chyler Leigh were really the only funny elements of this show...also, it was nice to see an Asian guy portrayed as a somewhat cool guy who "gets some", as opposed to a science nerd or a clueless foreign exchange student or something.

The Shield kicks so much ass it aint funny. And is it just me or is FX becomeing a damn good channel? it used to suck but now with the shielw, buffy repeats, good movies(they are always playing varsity blues or mallrats, etc) and son of the beach.

Everything elese blew, except maybe 24. I missed the first 3 eps, and didnt wanna ruin anything os I havent watched the show at all.

The Shield was easily the best show of the 2001-2002 season. However, "24" was the most dramatic and exciting tv in years. Nothing comes close to those two shows.

Smallville was horrible, Andy Ritcher was decent (but at least it got renewed for Midseason 2004).

Greg The Bunny was pure Shit.

Bernie Mac was very good but was nowhere near creative but it was good to see another quality Black Comedy that was tasteful, but it is nowhere near Cosby Show as some critics said.

80's show was horrible and deserved to be axed. They should have casted better. Which killed a franchise.

Scrubs is good and fianlly NBC smartened up and put a decent show at the 8:30 slot. This expected to replace Friends next season. It's better then "Screwed" and "Inside Scwartz" and "Just Shoot Me".

My Wife and Kids were mentioned but they are a second season show. And Im pissed they moved against the only other black comedy, Bernie Mac.

Osbournes was one of the biggest shows of the year and about 9 esps were good and the others were hit and miss. Good show but Season 2 will be horrible.

My vote would definately go for 24.  I love this show.  I like the intensity of it.  Jack Bauer is having quite possibly the worst day of any character to ever to grace a TV.  Good writing, good acting, and more plot twists than you can shake a stick at.  Glad they are bringing it back, it deserves it.

I also liked Undeclared (the fraternity Rush and Pledging shows were kinda dead on IMO, and I am a Frat boy, or was)

I liked Andy Richter Controls the Universe as well.

And The Bernie Mac Show has it's own unique charm to it.

FX shows the reruns of 24. I'm not sure when they will show the whole season in order starting with the pilot. But FX has a website where you can find out when episodes come on. I'm not sure what time the pilot was suppose to represent since i didn't see first few shows anyone here remember.
