The new weezer

Maladroit is, as I said, blah. It's vanilla. It wants to appeal to the greatest amount of people, which isn't always a bad thing--last year's "Green Album" was a bright, sunny bit of power pop that was underrated by many a Weezer fan for not being Pinkerton, and, in my opinion, better than the first, but slightly overrated (but nonetheless likable) first album--but here...here Weezer has become the countless bands they have influenced. Not awful or anything, it's just there.

Yeah, I think I already commented on this somewhere else, but this is a good chance to go into more detail.

"American Gigolo" and "Dope Nose" are good ol' fun rockers, but a lot of the rest of the stuff doesn't impress me so much.  The Green album has taken a long time to grow on me, but I don't see too much growth happening here.  This is the first Weezer album I've heard where I can actually point to a track or two and say "this totally does not belong here."  "Burnt Jamb" just ain't that good.  The album also lacks the flow that made the other Weezer albums so good and tolerable, that made 30-odd minutes the perfect time for them.  It slows down in the middle and doesn't rebound.

Now, this is only off two listens, so take it with a grain of salt.  I'd have to say that I would listen to Maladroit over a lot of the other crap on the market today, and that "Dope Nose" is one of the best singles currently getting MTV airplay (like that stands for anything anymore).  Unfortunately, it just ain't that charming.  When I first heard the guitar squeals on "Tired of Sex," I was hooked, and the album never really dropped off for me.  Same goes for Blue: "My Name Is Jonas" is a wicked good opener, and the whole album bumps along in a hard-rockin', quirky way that never really lets down too much.  Even Green, which isn't quite as unique, opens strong and doesn't really die out, with "Crab" and "Simple Pages" picking it all up just when you think it's going to stop.  There's just not as much intensity on Maladroit all the way through--just doesn't feel right.

Oh well.  Back to Fugazi now.

That last album was a great big green void of "blah," so I'm passing on this one.  Seems like I've made the right decision.

Unfortunately, you've got one of the three excellent songs on the album.

"American Gigolo," "Dope Nose," and "Take Control" are great.  The rest, however...not so much.

I was thinking the exact same thing about weezer.

I've just bought all their cd's and Burnt Maladroit. I listened to them in order and th newer they got the worse they were.

It seems to be the same with many bands i like, the older stuff is wicked and the newer stuff is made to appeal to everybody thus losing it's special quality.

I listened to my burned copy again, and I think I found my biggest gripe.  The album starts off really well, and "Take Control" is insanely rockin' good, but after that most of the songs fall into being pretty generic love songs without much of the unique instrumentation, vocals harmonies, and lyrics that I guess we've come to expect from Weezer.

It's just a very straight-forward record, and though it works better than most straight-forward rock records, it's still pretty plain.  There just aren't many classic moments, like the breakdown in "Holiday" or the thrashin' middle eight on "El Scorcho," to really walk away remembering.  Oh well.

Growing a full beard is the first sign of madness. rivers is pretty fucked in the head, he thinks everyone hates him. I haven't heard maladroit yet but from what people have told me it's good.
