Military legend Col. Hackworth passes away

Col. David Hackworth was, for a time, the most decorated American soldier alive. To give you an idea what that means, he was recommended for the Medal of Honor 3 times; was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, and awarded 10 Silver Stars, 8 Bronze Stars and 8 Purple Hearts (which he said he was most proud of next to his Combat Infantry Badge). Reading his history was like reading a John Wayne script. He started his career by lying about his age at 15 to fight in World War 2 (he never got a chance). He went from private to earning a battlefield comission in Korea where he was the youngest captain in the war. In Vietnam, he became the youngest bird colonel. I didn't always agree with his commentaries, but you could always count on Hack to give you a grunt's point of view with all the bluntness that goes with it. Even if that included burrying a boot up ""Perfumed Prince Generals." It was my honor to have shook his hand once and having the opporunity thank him for what he's done for me and my country.

He died Thursday from bladder cancer.

I feel terrible, I have never heard of this man at all.

You'd think with a career like this I would have heard more about him at some point but I don't recall this man at all.

Tragic way to die. Sounds like the kind of man who would have rather died charging the enemy while he's riding a horse with a sword in his hand than bladder cancer.
