Players signing with a team for 1 day

Recommended Posts

I notice this almost primarily in the NFL; a player will sign with a team for 1 day and then retire, so they can "retire as a Dolphin" or whatever the team is. For example, I know Ronnie Lott and Roger Craig both did it was San Fran, and now people are saying Jerry Rice may do the same thing. Is there any reason for this other than a publicity thing? I'm not slamming anyone for doing it, I'd just really like to know. Do you get paid for that 1 day? Does who you retire with officially have some kind of bearing on your pension or Hall of Fame information or what?

It's a matter of showing respect to the franchise they made their name and career with, I'd gather.
