NFL star Owens wants to test his skills in NBA

July 2, 2005

PHILADELPHIA, United States (AFP) - After leading the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl, Terrell Owens wants the chance to help the Sacramento Kings reach the National Basketball Association Finals.

Owens, lacked in a bitter contract dispute with American football's Eagles, said he wants to try basketball. The Kings want Owens on a summer development league team that features Percy Miller, also known as rap musician Master P.

But for Owens to try his two-sport dream alongside draft picks and free agents, he will need permission from the Eagles, the same team that has been unwilling to renegotiate his seven-year National Football League contract.

Owens sparked the Eagles to February's Super Bowl, where New England beat Philadelphia to claim a third NFL crown in four years. It was Owens' first year as a receiver for the Eagles after being obtained from San Francisco.

An Eagles spokesman told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Owens would be denied permission to play basketball, likely for fear of incurring an injury.

"He wants to do this very badly," said Drew Rosenhaus, Owens' agent. "It's always something that he has had an interest in and he'll be disappointed if he does not get the chance.

"The Kings extended the invitation, but they said they wouldn't be able to follow through unless they got permission from the Eagles."

Owens played three seasons of college basketball at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, starting five games and helping the team reach the 1995 national championship tournament.

In addition to winning a celebrity dunk competition at the 2000 NBA All-Star Game, Owens played in 2002 for the Adirondack Wildcats of the developmental US Basketball League.

Eagles players are expected to begin training camp August 1. Owens' status remains uncertain, with Rosenhaus telling the Inquirer that a trade is becoming more and more possible.

"Terrell has said he's receptive to the idea of playing for another team, but I do not have permission to seek a trade at this time," he said. "I've talked to the Eagles. Their position hasn't changed and neither has ours."

Yeah Drew is really looking out for the welfare of his client here...

This is just retarded, but amusing.
