Best 'devil' character

In all of movie-dom, which do you think was the best devil or devil-like character?

For me, it's gotta be Viggo Morgensen (sp?) playing Lucifer in the Prophecy

'Little Tommy Daggat. How I loved listening to your prayers every night, then you'd hop into your bed, so afraid that I was under there...and I was!'

I dunno, it's hard for me to take Tim Curry roles seriously anymore. He should just stick to comedy and comedy-like things (Like Congo).

Al Pacino in "Devil's Advocate" was pretty good of the top of my head.

I didn't like most of the movie, but I really liked the bit near the end of Blair Witch 2 where the woman was "possessed" by the witch or whatever.  She/it acted just how I'd envision an arrogant, superior, and thoroughly evil being would act.

Another thing, has anyone ever noticed the bewildering array of actors who've played the Devil at one time or another?  Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Jack Nicholson, Ian Holm, Vincent Price, Claude Rains, Max Von Sydow, George C. Scott, Terence Stamp, Billy Crystal, Gabriel Byrne, Harvey Keitel, Lon Chaney Jr, Jon Ritter, Donald Pleasance, George Burns, Christopher Lee... the list just never ends.  Even Liz Hurley and Jennifer Love Hewitt have taken shots at it.  Why is this one character so popular to play, but is so rarely played well enough to scare or disturb someone?  I mean, we're talking the Prince Of Darkness here, the Father Of Lies, but he's usually seen as a comedic figure.  What's the deal?

The best 'Devil' would arguably have to be Peter Cook in Beloved- He plays it with the right amount of nasty wit - as well as the name 'George Spiggot', and is good enough to make him a suitably sympathetic character.

Liz Hurley was definately the best looking of the bunch - though alas hampered by having the acting abilities of a small jar of treacle, and being in a rather duff film.

If they really did a "correct" characterization of the Devil, it would scare and/or disturb too many people and bring out all the protestors. The concept of the Devil scares people, so we have to give him flaws to take the fear factor away.

Al Pacino, Gabriel Byrne, and Jack Nicholson are my favorites.
